[Modification of the radiosensitivity of cultured "Vero" cells by cumene hydroperoxide].

Cumene-hydroperoxide is a radical reaction promoter. Vero cells monolayers treated with this compound were irradiated with gamma-rays and their radiosensitization was compared with that of irradiated, non-treated control cells. Cumene-hydroperoxide treated cells showed a paradoxal radioresistance. We propose a possible buffer-like effect of cumene-hydroperoxide to explain these results.

[Simultaneous appearance of precordial pain and effort-induced left bundle branch block. A study of 6 patients with normal coronary angiography].

6 patients, 4 men and 2 women, aged 38 to 60 years, were hospitalised for chest pain on effort, labelled as angina. The resting electrocardiogram was normal, except in 2 cases with incomplete left bundle branch block. Exercise stress testing induced simultaneous chest pain and complete left bundle branch block (LBBB) (at a rate of 15 to 160 beats/min, mean 115). The pain lasted as long as the LBBB was present and eased as it disappeared. All patients had normal coronary angiography and negative provocative tests of coronary spasm with atrial stimulation (4 cases), isoprenaline test (2 cases), atropine injection (2 cases) and nitroglycerin (1 case). A 2D echocardiogram performed in all the patients, showed no signs of myocardial disease. Myocardial perfusion on effort was studied by Thallium 201 scintigraphy in all 6 patients. There were no perfusion defects. An exercise stress test was performed after beta-blocker treatment in 3 patients. LBBB appeared each time and the pain was always present. The induction of bradycardia with propranolol (5 cases) or verapamil (3 cases) did not reduce the frequency of chest pain. No serious complications were observed during follow-up (myocardial infarction, death). The syndrome of painful LBBB is not related exclusively to tachycardia. Myocardial ischaemia does not seem to be the underlying mechanism judged by the negative thallium studies.

Effect of atenolol, a new cardioselective beta-blocker, on plasma renin activity in treatment of hypertension.

Atenolol, a cardioselective beta-blocking drug, was prescribed in doses of 100 mg b.i.d. in 23 patients with essential hypertension. At the end of the first month of treatment with Atenolol we found a significant fall in blood pressure, heart rate and plasma renin activity (P.R.A.). Besides, there existed a relationship between changes in diastolic blood pressure, in mean arterial pressure and initial plasma renin activity, and a relationship between changes in blood pressure and changes in P.R.A. It results from this finding that pretreatment P.R.A. is of predictive value of short-term efficacy of the beta-blocker. This correlation was borderline in 21 patients after a mean of 7 month treatment and could no be found for 12 cases after a mean of 10 month-treatment while the fall in P.R.A. was still significant. It therefore appears that--with reserve of the representativeness of the sample--quantitative relations between the antihypertensive effect of Atenonol and P.R.A. are no longer significant on long-term treatment.

[Analysis of one thousand liver scans carried out using technetium phytate (author's transl)].

One thousand liver scans were carried out using technetium phytate. This soluble compound is transformed in the circulating blood into a colloid by chelation of serum calcium, thereby forming a macromolecular phytate of calcium and technetium. The presenting symptoms are compared with the isotopic findings. This microcolloid has the advantages common to all technetium tracers and, in addition, is easy to prepare and has the advantage of a distribution between the liver, spleen and bone of the same type as that seen with colloidal gold 198 without the dosimetric problems associated with the latter. Although it has a level of hepatic fixation which is less than that of certain sulphide complexes of technetium, the authors feel that it appears to provide a better relfection of the colloidopexic function of the liver.
