[Ambulatory ECG during screening phase in relation to other technics in patients with precordial pain].

Screening of patients with precordial symptoms is a mayor social problem. Holter monitoring is easy to use because it ambulatory, non invasive, can be repeated without harm, has no contraindications and permits prolonged monitoring. Therefore, it seemed necessary to determine the "role" of this test. We examined all of the Holter monitorings performed in Dynamic electrocardiographic laboratory of the S. Matteo Polyclinic from 1983 to 1986. 480 of the 3365 patients visited, presented precordial symptoms. 162 patients (group A) had established ischemic heart disease (old myocardial infarction and/or coronary arteriography). 318 patients (group B) had no definite diagnosis. 71 subjects from group A and 140 from group B presented a typical symptomatology. Group A showed a 31.48% positivity during the test with 165 ischemic attacks. Group B had 25.15% positivity with 397 ischemic attacks. 51 symptomatic attacks (30%) were recorded for group B. Therefore, there was a mayor incidence of silent ischemic heart disease in both groups. Results obtained comparing Holter monitoring to the bicycle ergometry exercise test and to functional test, were comparable in 56.91% (sensibility 41.71% and specificity 78.62%) in the first case and 61.38% (sensibility 42.50% and sensitivity 73.77%) in the latter. In conclusion, we believe that Holter monitoring is useful in mass screening because it permits monitoring of most ischemic attacks, whether under stress or at rest, symptomatic or silent.

[Cosmetic acne and a test of comedogenicity].

A comedogenic test was carried out on the internal ear canal of four adult, masculine, albino rabbits, using butter of cacao and linseed oil, both known to be present in various cosmetic products. Histologic observation after 14 days showed follicular hyperkeratosis conferming the validity of this test.

[Endothelial cell culture as a model for the study of wound healing].

Endothelial cells culture can be considered a reliable method for investigating about granulation tissue production in wound healing and for evaluating the pharmacological action of some chemicals on granulation tissue development. Endothelial cells have been obtained from human umbilical cords after trypsin treatment and their endothelial origin has been demonstrated by light microscopy, by immunofluorescence against factor VIII associated protein and by the platelet adhesion assay. The influence of fibronectin as substratum and of hyaluronic acid as soluble factor on adhesion and growth of endothelial cells has been investigated. Both these substances, but especially hyaluronate, determine a better attachment and an increase in the growth rate when compared with control cultures plated on plastic substratum and without hyaluronic acid in the culture medium.

[Diftalone in the prevention and therapy of inflammatory complications of dental surgery].

The capacity of diphthalone to prevent postoperative inflammation was evaluated in 46 patients who had undergone dental surgery. The drug was always administered at a dose of 1000 mg/die for 5-7 days using two different therapeutic schedules, the before and after the operation in 23 patients and only afterwards in the other half. Results were satisfactory although the most evident benefits were obtained with the first schedule, namely when treatment was commenced two days prior to operation. Tolerance was good.

[Linear and volumetric calculations of the free gingiva on deciduous and permanent teeth].

The authors expose the results of an analysis made by measurements and volumetric calculations, of deciduous and permanent teeth, estimated at the level of the cementum-enamel junction and of the circumferences passing through the points of the occlusal and apical maximum convexity of the junction itself. It may be useful to remember free gingiva is that part of gingival sulcus included between the gingival margin and the bottom of sulcus, it is a tridimensional structure, having triangular section, where the gingival sulcus depth is the height and the thickness at the bottom of gingival sulcus is the base of the triangle. These measurements can be useful to examine closely the analysis of periodontal physiopathology.
