The onset of sweat gland and salivary gland tumors in the same patient is a rare association known only for a few years. The case is reported of a man who died at 63 with lung metastases and bearing a turban and salivary tumor (both of the eccrine cylindroma dermal type). This "cutaneous and salivary neoplastic syndrome" may be explained by a common stem cell in different organs.

The behavior and morphology of mouse mammary tumors in high cancer strain mice are controlled by the causative murine mammary tumor viruses (MuMTV). However, relationships also exist between mammary tumors and other factors such as host genotype, other etiologic agents (chemicals, X-rays), and hormones. Among the latter, prolactin has been particularly studied. The aim of this investigation was to test whether the mammary tumor morphology controlled by C3H and RIII MuMTVs is in any way influenced by continuous prolactin secretion. A total of 28 BALB/cfC3H and 24 BALB/cfRIII virgin female mice was implanted with 2 hypophyseal isografts under the kidney capsule. Mice were of the same BALB/c genotype and carried respectively C3H and RIII MuMTV infection. The biologic and morphologic characterization of the tumors observed showed that several differences previously reported between mammary tumors in breeding female mice of the 2 strains persisted in virgins bearing hypophyseal isografts. These data confirm that the mammary tumor characters in high cancer strain mice are mainly carried out and controlled by the causative MuMTVs but also suggest that different MuMTVs may show different sensitivity to continuous prolactin secretion.
The morphologic pattern of mammary tumors induced by milk-transmitted C3H and RIII murine mammary tumor viruses (MuMTVs) in BALB/c hosts infected by foster nursing were investigated further an compared taking into account several tumor and host variables. Comparison of BALB/cfC3H and BALB/cfRIII mammary tumors under identical tumor and host conditions showed highly significant differences in subgross morphology and histologic structure. Differences in cytology were also observed. Data suggest that mammary tumor morphology in high cancer strain mice is controlled by the causative MuMTV.

The biological and morphological characteristics of mammary tumors in BALB/c mice infected with RIII mammary tumor virus (MTV) by foster nursing have substantially kept stable and unchanged after 20 years, 53 inbred generations and transfer of the strain from Perugia to Pisa. This suggests that the causal MTV keeps unaltered in time its biological properties.
Superior vena cava obstruction is described in a patient with two endocardial pacing electrodes. At necropsy a severe stenosis of the venous lumen was found at the site of intersection of the two catheters. There was no evidence of thrombus formation. Venous wall stenosis is an unusual complication of transvenous pacing and is probably favoured by the presence of two electrodes.

A case of superior vena cava syndrome is described in a patient with two endocardial pacing electrodes. At autopsy a severe stenosis of the venous lumen was found at the crossing site of the two catheters. There was no evidence of thrombus formation. Four cases of cardiac myxoma diagnosed among 68 solid intracavitary cardiac formations are described. The myxomas (all unexpected autopsy findings of the left atrium) are illustrated by their clinica, macroscopic, histologic and histochemic characteristics. The differences between heart myxomas and thrombi are briefly outline and discussed.
AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Thickness and level of invasion are the main morphological elements for an approximate but not sufficiently sensitive prognostic evaluation of cutaneous melanomas. By using immunohistochemical methods it is possible to detect biological markers related to prognosis. We have studied p53, PCNA, Bcl-2 and P-gp expression in 49 primary cutaneous melanomas. MATERIALS: We used the immunophosphatase APAAP immunohistochemical method. The percentage of labeled cells (according to four classes of positivity: <5%; 5-25%; 25-50%; >50%) and the localization of immunoreactivity were expressed for each marker. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the correlations between markers and level or thickness of melanomas. RESULTS: We found a good correlation between p53 expression and melanoma thickness (P <0.005), PCNA and P-gp expression. No relationship was observed between Bcl-2 expression and the different variables considered or other markers. CONCLUSIONS: Our data seem to indicate an unfavorable prognostic role of higher nuclear p53 expression. However, we believe that our results need to be integrated with patients' clinical follow-up and with the study of the expression of these markers in benign melanocytic lesions to gain more accurate information about their prognostic significance.
AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The B72.3, MM1.80 and 4.63 monoclonal antibodies directed against tumor-associated antigens react in human breast also with metaplastic, preneoplastic and metastatic cells, whereas they do not react with normal adult mammary tissue. The aim of our study was to point out the expression of these antigens during mammary gland development, since tumor-associated antigens are known to represent antigens of differentiation. STUDY DESIGN: Fifty female fetal breasts between 20 and 40 weeks of gestational age were studied. RESULTS: Mammary tissue was identified only in 15 cases. B72.3, MM1.80 and 4.36 monoclonal antibodies reacted with epithelial antigens and maintained the same location and intensity in the various gestational ages. Immunoreactivity was weak, cytoplasmic and widespread for the 4.36 monoclonal antibody, intense and cytoplasmatic in a large number of cells for the B72.3 monoclonal antibody, and intense and luminal for the MM1.80 monoclonal antibody. CONCLUSIONS: Such data further support the hypothesis that the normal process of development and differentiation can occur during tumor progression processes. Identification of these new oncofetal markers could offer a new perspective able to recognize the different phases of neoplastic progression and could be useful for prevention.

A case of congenital fibrosarcoma is described and analyzed together with 27 other cases reported in the literature. The rather favourable biologic behaviour justifies conservative therapy based on complete and early surgical resection.
