Physical punishment is part of the continuum of child abuse, writes Robyn Pound. Here she sets the campaign for legislation for children's rights and against physical punishment in the context of a health promotion strategy to achieve improvements in many of the Health of the Nation target areas, and in mental health in particular.
Like many health visitors Robyn Pound felt uncomfortable when clients threatened or smacked their children, yet seldom felt able to broach the subject as a topic for health promotion. The mother who raises her hand in threat to her toddler is demonstrating a method of management which may well be stacking up problems for the future. Every child needs to learn in a warm and encouraging environment which fosters self esteem. Having clarified in her own mind why parents should not hit their children she describes how she has gone public.
