[The effect of age and thyroxine on lipogenesis during ontogeny. Activity of malic enzyme].

In young rats of different ages of postnatal development the effect of short-term administration of thyroxine (T4) on the activity of malic enzyme (ME) was studied in brown adipose tissue (BAT), liver, heart and kidney. Thyroxine was injected in a dose sufficient to saturate all receptor sites, i.e. 1 microgram per 1 gram of B.W. during 3 consecutive days. The highest activities of ME were found in BAT. An increase in enzyme activities with age was observed in all tissues studied in control animals. Injections of T4 increased the activity od ME in the liver; in BAT a significant increase was found only the younger age group (6 days). In older animals (40 days) with high values in BAT of controls no further increase induced by T4 was observed. In the kidney as well as in the heart no significant changes were found after T4 administration. It is concluded that in developing animals BAT may play a more important role in lipid synthesis than considered so far. (Fig. 1, Ref. 7.)

[Carbocysteine in the treatment of recurrent bronchitis in infants].

In a group of 51 children aged 6-24 months the therapeutic effectiveness of the mucolytic preparation carbocysteine was tested and compared with the effect of Ipeca syrup. The effect was evaluated by means of a point score comprising changes of the clinical picture of the disease and the use of other laboratory examinations. The results of the examination revealed the more favourable effect of carbocysteine, as compared with a mixture of Ipeca syrup in the treatment of acute relapsing bronchitis in infants.

Salicylate intoxication after use of topical salicylic acid ointment by a patient with psoriasis.

The authors describe a therapeutically well managed case of severe salicylate intoxication in a patient with psoriasis who treated himself with 40 percent salicylic ointment applied to approximately 41 percent of his body surface. Nineteen hours after the application of salicylic acid, his blood level of the agent was 6.04 mmol/liter. The patient underwent hemodialysis and was discharged after fourteen days in good general health.

[Broncho-Vax and IRS 19 in the treatment of recurrent respiratory tract inflammation in children].

A group of 80 children with relapsing infections of the respiratory pathways (a minimum of three during the previous period) were investigated during the first year of the investigation (1987-88) with regard to the number and duration of the disease, absence from school, antibiotic consumption and use of bronchodilatating agents. In the subsequent year 1988-1989 the children were divided into a group treated with Broncho-Vaxom, a group treated with IRS 19 and a control group. Before the onset of administration and then every two months functional examinations of the lungs were made in the children. At the beginning of treatment and after its termination some immunological and laboratory values were examined. The effect of treatment was evaluated also subjectively by the parents and physician. Both preparations had a favourable effect on prevention of relapses of respiratory infections. This effects was more favourable after Broncho-Vaxom, in particular in prevention of inflammations of the lower respiratory pathways. IRS 19 eliminates relapses of infections of the upper respiratory pathways sooner.

[Incidence of e-antigen and antibodies against it in a selected group of HBsAg-positive Vietnamese citizens].

In 23 citizens of the Vietnamese Socialist Republic on arrival in Czechoslovakia HBsAg positivity of serum was revealed which in 78.2% of subjects was confirmed during a repeated examination after 2-3 months. At that time also HBeAg and antibodies against it were assessed. HBeAg was found in 13.0% and anti-HBe in 47.8% of the subjects with repeatedly positive HBsAg, and anti-HBe in 21.8% of subjects, where HBsAg was negative during repeated examinations. The authors emphasize the importance of assessment of these markers of hepatitis B from the clinical and epidemiological aspect.

[The validity of laboratory tests in the diagnosis of alcoholism and alcoholic liver injury].

The authors assessed the value of commonly available laboratory examinations for the diagnosis of suspected excessive alcohol intake and suspected liver damage by alcohol. They tested the validity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gammaglutamyl transferase (GMT), the blood sugar level, serum cholesterol, bilirubinaemia, ferrinaemia and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). The highest validity as regards sensitivity of the examination was recorded in the MCV with a sensitivity of 0.78 and examination of GMT with a sensitivity of 0.72. By combination of MCV and GMT in an alternative manner, the sensitivity rose to 0.87. Evaluation of the groups by the method of discrimination analysis, using all ten parameters, revealed the possibility of 100% correct classification of non-alcoholic subjects and a 86.2% correct qualification of alcoholic subjects.

[Clinical evaluation of a new radiopharmaceutical agent 99mTc-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3)].

In the present clinically oriented study the authors checked the properties of 99mTc-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3), the new radiopharmaceutical for dynamic scintigraphy of the kidneys, in a group of 30 patients. They positively value particularly the high quality of visualization of the parenchyma and the urinary tract, the pharmacokinetic properties similar to those of 131I-orthoiodhippurate and the capability of representation of the kidneys with their markedly decreased function. They examined the take-up of the pharmaceutical in the liver, which is slightly more marked with the worsening tubular function and partly depends also on the length of the time interval between the preparation and administration of MAG3. No significant changes were found in the clinical and principal laboratory parameters after its administration. In conclusion, the authors point out to advantageous properties of the novel radiopharmaceutical for clinical use in our conditions.

[Validity of biochemical examinations in ascites in clinical practice].

The authors examined, using biochemical, cultivation and cytological methods, ascites in 94 patients. They divided the patients into four groups: group 1 (36 patients)--malignant ascites, group 2 (35 patients)--cirrhotic ascites, group 3 (11 patients)--cardial ascites, group 4 (12 patients)--nephrogenic ascites. The authors tried to differentiate malignant ascites from non-malignant, based on biochemical parameters. As the composition of ascites is influenced by some factors (diuretics, dialysis) the authors recommend the use of biochemical analyses of ascites in clinical practice.

[Levels of alpha 1-antitrypsin in the blood of patients with chronic bronchitis].

Serum levels of alpha 1-antitrypsin were studied in 80 patients with chronic bronchitis. As a manifestation of the inflammatory response, nonsignificant increase was recorded compared to the group of healthy subjects. In discordance with literary data, no significant differences were found between bronchitics smokers and non-smokers. In 5 patients (6.2%), alpha 1-antitrypsin serum levels were below the lower limit of the reference range. The patients complained of cough, expectoration, and dyspnea. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to determine serum alpha 1-antitrypsin levels in smokers before they take up a job in a dusty environment and in bronchitics before inhalation treatment with proteolytic enzymes is administered. In alpha 1-antitrypsin deficit the value of substitution therapy in patients with emphysema is being emphasized.

Study of cough in anaesthetized cats with experimental pulmonary oedema.

The authors studied parameters of laryngopharyngeal (LPh) and tracheobronchial (TB) cough (the number of efforts--NE, the number of efforts per minute--NE.min-1, the intensity of the maximum effort--IME and the intensity of the attack--IA), respiratory parameters (VT, f, Cdyn), blood gas values (PaO2, PaCO2) and the pH in the arterial blood of anaesthetized cats (Pentobarbital Spofa, 35 mg x kg-1 i.p. with experimental pulmonary oedema. Oedema was induced by the i.v. administration of a fatty acid mixture (capric acid 3.8 g, caprylic acid 3.1 g and olive oil 3.0 g)--in a dose of 0.05 ml x kg-1 in group 1 and of 0.01 ml x kg-1 in group 2. Cough was elicited by stimulating the laryngopharyngeal and tracheobronchial mucosa with a silon fibre. Pulmonary oedema was determined from a macroscopic and microscopic examination of the lungs, from the ratio of lung weight to body weight and from the percentual dry weight of the right lungs. The authors found that the intensity of cough was depressed during pulmonary oedema, particularly in the case of TB cough. VT and Cdyn fell, f rose and the PaO2 and pH values steadily decreased.
