Effect of densification on the density of vibrational states of glasses.

We studied the effect of densification on the vibrational dynamics of a Na(2)FeSi(3)O(8) glass. The density of vibrational states (DOS) has been measured using nuclear inelastic scattering. The corresponding changes in the microscopic, intermediate-range, and macroscopic properties have also been investigated. The results reveal that, in the absence of local structure transformations, the Debye level and the glass-specific excess of vibrational states above it have the same dependence on density, and the evolution of the DOS is fully described by the transformation of the elastic medium.

Density of vibrational states of a hyperquenched glass.

The vibrational density of states of a hyperquenched and an annealed glass has been measured using nuclear inelastic scattering. The hyperquenched sample shows a higher number of vibrational states in the low-energy region with respect to the annealed glass. It reveals, however, lower density and sound velocity and, therefore, smaller Debye energy. After rescaling the energy axes in Debye energy units and area renormalization, the density of states of both samples becomes identical. Thus, the effect of quenching is described by the transformation of the continuous medium.

High-pressure ground state of SmB6: electronic conduction and long range magnetic order.

High-pressure 149Sm nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation and specific heat measurements have been performed on the intermediate valent Kondo insulator SmB6. The results show that at a critical pressure p(c) approximately = 6 GPa, where the charge gap closes, a first order transition occurs to a magnetically ordered state, which shows typical features of trivalent samarium compounds. The similarity with SmS stresses the role of local correlations and gives important insight into the debate on the local or itinerant character of the f electrons in heavy fermion systems.

Collective nature of the boson peak and universal transboson dynamics of glasses.

Using probe molecules with resonant nuclei and nuclear inelastic scattering, we are able to measure the density of states exclusively for collective motions with a correlation length of more than approximately 20 A. Such spectra exhibit an excess of low-energy modes (boson peak). This peak behaves in the same way as that observed by conventional methods. This shows that a significant part of the modes constituting the boson peak is of collective character. At energies above the boson peak, the reduced density of states of the collective motions universally exhibits an exponential decrease.

Combined nuclear-molecular resonance inelastic scattering of x rays.

We report on theoretical and experimental studies of nuclear inelastic scattering in a molecular crystal, whose atoms experience both molecular and lattice vibrations. In this case scattering proceeds as combined nuclear-molecular resonance inelastic scattering. The lattice vibrations give rise to inelastic scattering around the molecular resonances with an energy dependence identical to that around the nuclear resonance. The incoherent nature of the scattering in the molecular resonances results in a proper balance of elastic and inelastic components, which has important implications for studies of heterogeneous systems.

Pressure-induced magnetic order in golden SmS.

High pressure 149Sm nuclear forward scattering experiments have been performed on the nonmagnetic semiconductor SmS. We present the first clear evidence that the closure of the insulating gap at p(Delta) approximately 2 GPa coincides with the appearance of magnetic order. The pressure-induced magnetic phase transition has some first order character and suggests that the Sm ions are nearly trivalent at p(Delta). A Gamma(8) quartet crystal field ground state with a value of approximately 0.5 micro(B) for the samarium magnetic moment is inferred from our results. Considerable magnetic short range order is observed above the ordering temperature inferred from macroscopic measurements.

Imaging the magnetic spin structure of exchange-coupled thin films.

We have investigated the magnetic spin structure of a soft-magnetic film that is exchange-coupled to a hard-magnetic layer to form an exchange-spring layer system. The depth dependence of the magnetization direction was determined by nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation from ultrathin 57Fe probe layers. In an external field a magnetic spiral structure forms that can be described within a one-dimensional micromagnetical model. The experimental method allows one to image vertical spin structures in stratified media with unprecedented accuracy.

Coarsening of antiferromagnetic domains in multilayers: the key role of magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

The domain structure of an antiferromagnetic superlattice is studied. Synchrotron Mössbauer and polarized neutron reflectometric maps show micrometer-size primary domain formation as the external field decreases from saturation to remanence. A secondary domain state consisting mainly of at least 1 order of magnitude larger domains is created when a small field along the layer magnetizations induces a bulk-spin-flop transition. The domain-size distribution is reproducibly dependent on the magnetic prehistory. The condition for domain coarsening is shown to be the equilibrium of the external field energy with the anisotropy energy.

Perpendicular spin orientation in ultrasmall Fe islands on W(110).

We have studied the magnetism of Ag-coated Fe islands on W(110) by nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation at the 14.4 keV resonance of (57)Fe. Separated islands with an average diameter of 2.0 nm and monolayer thickness are formed at a Fe coverage of theta = 0.57 bulk monolayers. Time spectra of the nuclear decay were measured in the temperature range from 4.5 to 300 K. We find strong evidence for perpendicular spin orientation, which most likely results from the interplay of shape anisotropy and elastic strain in the islands.

Nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation by deoxymyoglobin.

Nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation is used to determine the quadrupole splitting and the mean square displacement of the iron atom in deoxymyoglobin in the temperature range between 50 K and 243 K. Above 200 K an abnormally fast decay of the forward scattered intensity at short times after the synchrotron flash is observed, which is caused by protein-specific motions. The results strongly support the picture that protein dynamics seen at the position of the iron can be understood by harmonic motions in the low temperature regime while in the physiological regime diffusive motions in limited space are present. The shape of the resonance broadening function is investigated. An inhomogeneous broadening with a Lorentzian distribution indicating dipole interactions results in a better agreement with the experimental data than the common Gaussian distribution.
