In a prospective, randomized study it was researched whether epinephrine-free Articain 2%-solution is suitable for dental surgery. The estimated local anesthetic effect was subjective considering a dental operation an in comparison with the usual Articain 4% solution with an epinephrine addition of 1:200,000 (Ultracain D-S). The local anesthetic effect of the 2% solution was clearly lower than that of the 4% solution. However, in many cases even the lower doses of the 2% solution was sufficient for dental treatment including surgery. The higher efficiency of the 4% solution is more a result of a higher concentration than of anesthesia. In principle, the epinephrine-free 2% Articain solution is suitable for dental surgery, although, due to a shorter anesthetic duration and an unsure effect additional injections have to be given more often.
In a clinical trial over a period of two years 50 cavities were filled up with an ionomeric porous micro implant (V-Os)* as bone replacement material after apicectomy and excision of cysts. Primary healing was found in 43 cases. 3 months after the operation 44 of 46 examined cases showed no pathological signs. In two cases the material had to be removed. 2 years after the operation 35 cases should be examined, in one case there was a fistula, the other cases showed no pathological signs. The comparison of the individual reproducible X-ray pictures after 3, 6, 12 and 24 months shows a bone regeneration next to the implanted micro implant.
Applying a video game the traffic aptitude of patients was investigated before and after dental surgical treatment and local anesthesia. Local anesthesia or operative removal of impacted third molars does not reduce the psychophysical performance important for driving a car if there is no influence of other factors. The consequences of the obtained results are discussed even under forensic aspects.
The physical performance of 23 persons was tested at different time of day (morning, noon, evening) under the influence of low doses of alcohol (0.8%). The results obtained indicate, that the capability of performing the tests was remarkable reduced. In the evening the effect of alcohol was significantly higher than at noon and morning; the time of recovery was also prolonged. Under these aspects the limit of 0.8% for car drivers in (West) Germany has to be reconsidered.

The incidence of bacteremia after application of a dental irrigator was investigated in 100 healthy volunteers. Venous blood was inoculated in routine blood culture bottles one, three and five minutes after dental irrigation. In 39 volunteers a transient bacteremia was detected, mainly Strep. Viridans was cultured. Incidence correlated with the grade of oral hygiene und periodontal disease.

Two rate-responsive pacemakers (Activitrax and Sensolog) were tested in order to show up to which extent its function can be disturbed by dental treatment. Inhibition of the pacemaker occurred by switching the electrical dental appliance on and off, or by moving it back and forth. In most cases, inhibition was only evident when the distance between the pacemaker and the electrical appliance was less than 10 cm. The electrome proved to be the most potent source of disturbance, as the function of the pacemaker was totally inhibited when it was switched on and off with a frequency of 1 to 2 Hz and even at a distance of 2.8 meters. During dental treatment--especially osteotomies--vibrations are transferred upon the patient which can cause an increase of the pacing rate.
Four case reports are described to confirm typical diagnostic criteria for a static bone cavity. Theories of etiology are mentioned. A surgical procedure is not indicated if the main criteria are adhered to.
100 patients with abnormal pain in the facial area have been examined and questioned about their symptoms and the preceding therapy. At the time of this study the patients already had a history of pain of about five years. Since no cause could be discovered for the pain, treatment was limited to symptomatic relief using injections of long-acting local anesthetics or carbamacepine. Generally, both methods resulted in a relief of the symptoms.

In contrast to the usual technique of Ledermann to implant four TPS-implants in edentulous mandibles a modified method with only two implants is described. The advantages of taking only two implants are the easier implantation technique, the lower costs, and especially a better dynamic of the full denture. In connection with a round bar most of the pressure produced by the masticatory muscles is taken by the mucosae and almost no eccentric forces effect on the implants. This technique should only be applied combined with a denture in the edentulous upper jaw. Strictly regarding the range of indications our rate of failure with two implants is not higher than with the usual method described by Ledermann.
50 impacted third molars were surgically removed and each tooth was divided in half. One half of each tooth was irradiated with 60 or 120 Gy. Exposure to irradiation did not affect the hardness of enamel or dentin.
