Orbital ordering in LaMnO3 investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy.

Orbital ordering leads to an unconventional excitation spectrum that we investigate by resonance Raman scattering using incident photon energies between 1.7 and 5.0 eV. We use spectral ellipsometry to determine the corresponding dielectric function. Our results show resonant behavior of the phonon Raman cross section when the laser frequency is close to the orbiton-excitation energy of 2 eV in LaMnO3. We show an excellent agreement between theoretical calculations based on the Franck-Condon mechanism activating multiphonon Raman scattering in first order of the electron-phonon coupling and the experimental data of phonons with different symmetries.

Human cytomegalovirus DNA level in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

The objectives of the study were to estimate human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) DNA copy number in broncho-alveolar lavage cells, blood leukocytes, and serum of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The study groups consisted of 16 patients, newly diagnosed with IPF and never treated, (mean age 40.9 +/-11.0 yr; F/M-7/9) and in 16 adult healthy volunteers (mean age 36.8 +/-6.4 yr; F/M-4/12) used as controls. The HCMV DNA copy number was calculated by a Q-PCR method using TaqMan ABI PRISM 7700. We found that the prevalence of the HCMV DNA positive subjects in the patient group (75%) did not differ significantly from that in the control group (69%). We also found that in both patient and control groups the mean HCMV DNA copy number in BAL cells was significantly higher than that in blood leukocytes (log10=2.7 vs. 1.2 for patients and 2.8 vs. 0.9 for controls, respectively). However, a higher HCMV DNA copy number in blood serum was observed in IPF patients than in controls (log10=3.2 vs. 2.0, respectively). We conclude that the lungs play an important role in the human pathobiology of cytomegalovirus sustenance.

[Risk factors for airway obstruction in school children with respiratory symptoms assessed in a five year prospective study].

The aim of this prospective study was to assess age-related changes of the respiratory status and to evaluate risk factors for persistent airflow obstruction in symptomatic school children. One hundred fifty children aged 7-12 years (mean age 9.5 yr.) were followed-up. In 1994 parents--administered questionnaire, skin prick tests and three dynamic spirometries in 4-6 week intervals were performed. Airways flow limitation was defined as FEV1%, MEF50 or MEF25 below minimal value. In 1999 questionnaires and spirometry were repeated by the same methods. The response rate was 74.7%. Children's respiratory status generally improved. Frequency of respiratory symptoms and obstructive disturbances (37.5% in 1994 versus 22.3% in 1999) decreased. Significant risk factors for airways flow limitation in 1999 were nocturnal dry cough, doctor diagnosed asthma, female gender and parental smoking. Advanced or persisting airway obstruction during several month in 1994 was valuable to predict lung function impairment in 1999. No relation between skin tests results and persistent airway obstruction was observed.

[Pulmonary microlithiasis--difference between radiology results and pulmonary function tests].

The case od 22-years old woman with pulmonary microlithiasis is described. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of lung tissue. In electron microscopy lung fibrosis was seen. High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and pulmonary function tests (lung compliance, diffusion capacity, exercise test) were done. The role of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and lung scintigraphy with technetium in the diagnostic procedure of this disease is discussed.

[Ventilatory disturbances in school children with asthmatic symptoms in anamnesis].

In 102 school children aged 7 to 12 yr with diagnosed asthma or wheezing in the past 12 months spirometry was performed three times in 4 to 6 weeks intervals. Maximal expiratory flows at low lung volumes (MEF50 and/or MEF25) were reduced in more than one third of children. The reduction of MEF50 and MEF25 was more frequent, more deep, and more persistent in following tests as compared with FEV1%. Small airways obstruction was observed in almost 90% children with FEV1% slightly above limit value.

[Chylopericardium and chylothorax of unknown etiology].

A case of a young man with chylopericardium followed by chylothorax was described. Performed diagnostic procedures did not reveal infectious, neoplastic or traumatic cause of chylothorax. Only partially deformed lymphatic system of the thorax was found.

[Half-time of erythropoietin in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases].

Presence of elevated plasma levels of erythropoietin (EPO) has been reported both in polycythaemic and normocythaemic patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present study aimed to elucidate in what extent prolonged erythropoietin half-life time (T1/2EPO) is involved in the pathogenesis of elevated plasma EPO levels in patients with COPD. Seven normocythaemic patients (5 men and 2 women) with CODP and 6 healthy controls (4 males and 2 females) were examined. In all examined subjects half-life time of erythropoietin was determined after i.v. administration of EPO in a dose of 50 U/kg b.m. In COPD patients the T1/2EPO value was 5.98 +/- 0.67 hours and did not differ from that found in healthy controls (5.87 +/- 0.35 h). Results obtained in this study suggest participation of factors other than prolonged half-time of erythropoietin in the pathogenesis of polycythaemia in patients with COPD.

[Lung lipoproteinosis--diagnostic problems].

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is a very rare disease, first described by Rosen in 1958. It is characterized by the accumulation of lipoproteins in the pulmonary alveoli. Clinical and radiologic presentations are typical for the interstitial lung disease. Only few cases of this disease have been described in the Polish literature. A patient with disseminated lesions to the lungs is presented. A diagnosis was possible after an analysis of BAL fluid and histological examination of the lung tissue collected by the transbronchial biopsy.

[Erythropoietin secretion in patients with chronic obstructive lung diseases during normobaric oxygen inhalation].

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are characterized by compensatory polycythaemia probably induced by increased erythropoietin (EPO) secretion in the kidneys. METHODS AND RESULTS: As the regulatory mechanisms of erythropoietin secretion in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are scarcely known we studied plasma EPO levels in 14 patients with COPD (pO2 = 61.9 +/- 1.4 mm Hg, Hct = 47.8 +/- 1.1%) under basal conditions, after two hours of isobaric oxygen breathing and two and four hours after discontinued oxygen breathing. The control group consisted of 12 healthy subjects (pO2 = 87.5 +/- 2.2 mm Hg, Hct = 43.7 +/- 1.6%). Under basal conditions patients with COPD showed significantly higher plasma erythropoietin levels as compared with healthy controls. Oxygen breathing was followed by a significant decline of plasma EPO levels both in patients with COPD as in the control group. This decline was significantly more marked and of longer duration in COPD patients than in healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are characterized by significantly higher plasma EPO levels as compared with healthy subjects. 2. The renal oxygen sensor function involved in the regulation of EPO secretion seems to be altered in COPD patients.

[Lung fibrosis after bleomycin therapy].

A case of lung fibrosis is presented in a 44 year old male in whom interstitial pulmonary changes were observed in the course of bleomycin therapy of malignant granulomatosis. Following introduction of corticosteroids a radiological, clinical and functional improvement was observed. The functional changes were analyzed during the 7 month period of treatment. This case suggests that post bleomycin induced injury can be reversed with appropriate high doses of corticosteroids.
