Quality characteristics of blackgram papad.

Twelve commercial samples (S1-S12) of blackgram papad from south Indian markets were studied for sensory and physico-chemical properties, and positioned using canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). Results of analysis revealed perceptible variations in physico-chemical characteristics in both raw and fried papads. The percentage expansion on frying ranged from 32.75+/-2.73 (S4) to 73.53+/-3.47 (S3) and the extent of oil absorption varied from 28.30+/-0.02 (S4) to 49.45+/-0.03 (S3). The percentage expansion of papads negatively correlated with the moisture content of raw and fried papads (-0.86 and -0.76, respectively). Significant differences were seen in CIE color parameters, namely L* and a* values, between raw and fried samples for S1, S2, S4, S5 and S9, and for S3, S4, S6, S10 and S11, respectively, whereas b* values were significantly different for all the samples except for the sample S4. Sensory analysis using the quantitative descriptive analysis method revealed that all samples had good overall quality and had higher scores for the positive attributes, namely color, crispness, snappiness and blackgram aroma. A positive correlation (0.67) was found between the sensory score for yellow color and b* values. Further CDA was run to position the samples. The results of CDA indicated that samples S1 and S10 were grouped together in the same quadrant, which represents fairly high levels of four attributes (blisters, oily aroma, snappiness and overall quality). Samples S9, S11, S3 and S4 were located away from the directional vectors, having lower intensities of many attributes.

Diethyldithiocarbamate protection against cisplatin nephrotoxicity: antioxidant system.

This investigation elucidates the role of antioxidant system in cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity and the nephroprotection with diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC). Male Wistar rats were injected with 1) cisplatin; 2) cisplatin+DDTC and 3) vehicle control. Rats were sacrificed three days post-treatment and the corticomedullary junction of the kidney was isolated adn were analyzed for GSH, GSSG, SOD, CAT, and GSH.Px. Serum creatinine increased (500% of control) following cisplatin administration which decreased to 200% of control with DDTC. Cisplatin treated rats showed depletion of GSH levels, while cisplatin+DDTC injected rats had GSH values similar to controls. SOD and GSH.Px activities were found to be 63 and 40% of control following cisplatin administration which increased to 109 and 75% of control with DDTC respectively. Our findings suggest that cisplatin nephrotoxicity is mediated by impaired activities of SOD and GSH-Px enzymes and by GSH depletion. The protective mechanism of DDTC against cisplatin nephrotoxicity is related to the prevention of GSH depletion and restoring SOD and GSH-Px activities in the kidney of rats.

Cardiac surgery in patients with protamine allergy.

Intravenous administration of protamine is associated with risk of severe anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions. In this review the incidence, pathophysiology, clinical management, and strategies for prevention of protamine reactions are addressed.

Unilateral pulmonary edema--a report of two cases.

We report two cases of unilateral pulmonary edema, one in patient with chronic renal failure which was mistaken for pulmonary tuberculosis and the other in a patient with congestive heart failure. We have reviewed the relevant literature.

Embolotherapy of priapism.

Some cases of idiopathic priapism are due to uncontrolled, penile arterial inflow. These cases can be successfully treated by percutaneous transcatheter embolization of one or both internal pudendal arteries. Autologous clot is ideal for embolization as it permits revascularization and helps avoid impotence. The authors describe a 10-day old case of refractory priapism which was successfully treated angiographically.
