[The combination of computed tomography with sialography to diagnosing lesions of the parotid gland ].

32 patients with lesions of the parotid region underwent CT-sialography; 7 of these cases were selected to demonstrate the clinical usefulness of this diagnostic method. CT sialography allows to differentiate deep-lobe parotid tumors and parapharyngeal tumors. CT is also very good for estimation of the tumor size, which contributes to therapy planning. Basing on CT findings the operability of malignant tumors can be determined. CT sialography provides valuable information in cases with special diagnostic problems.

Tissue reactions to glass ceramics in the middle ear.

The bioactive glass ceramic "Ceravital" was used to fashion prostheses for the replacement of various ossicles in the middle ear. They were tested in 70 rabbit ears, where they were accepted in osseous areas without formation of surrounding fibrous tissue. Histological examinations regularly showed an osseous bond with the surrounding bony tissue. Mucous membrane covered these ossicular chain prostheses and showed no evidence of inflammatory reactions. Glass ceramic implants were also used to reconstruct the ossicular chain and the posterior wall of the outer ear canal in 100 patients. The functional results were satisfactory in all cases.

[Bioactive glass ceramics in the surgery of the nasal septum and paranasal sinuses (author's transl)].

In 38 rabbits defects of the bridge of the nose or the nasal septum were reconstructed by means of glass ceramic implants. Over a 15 months follow-up period no inflammatory reaction was observed. The mucoperichondrium remains unchanged over the implant and mucosa defects up to one square centimeter close over it. A bone lamina inserts between the mucoperichondrium and the implant surface near bone structures. New bone formations were found on glass ceramic implants that were placed into the subperichondral space of the rabbits' ears and on those implants that were covered by autologeous periost and situated in the thigh muscles of the animals.

[The width of the internal auditory meatus in Bell's palsy. A radiological-tomographical study (author's transl)].

44 patients with ischemic facial paralysis were studied and tomograms made of both petrous bones. An attempt was made to establish the normal averages of various portions of the internal auditory meatus (fundus, middle, porus) from frontal projections. In addition, a comparison of each portion of the internal auditory meatus was made between diseased and healthy sides. Of patients studied, one third showed a narrowing of the internal auditory meatus on the involved side. A correlation between narrowing of the bony internal auditory meatus and the occurrence of an ischemic facial paralysis could not be established. However, such cannot be totally excluded as a contributing factor in the origin of a Bell's palsy.

[A combined allogenic implant for the dorsum of the nose (author's transl)].

Report of three patients with small bony defects on the lateral bony wall or the bridge of the nose. Reconstruction was performed with a combined cushion like implant of lyodura polsted with merthiolate preserved allongene crashed cartilage. Over a follow up time period of two years the cosmetic results are good. The histological behavior of these implants was studied in animals.

[Variations in middle-ear producen during a mask-ventilation (author's transl)].

In 30 patients ageing from 19-60 years dueing forced mask-ventilation, the pressures present in the epipharynx and the middle ear were measured. In 12 patients results raising pressure of the middle ear which has a corresponding level in the epipharynx accompanied by a time delay. It was possible to measure peaks in pressure of 100 cm H2O which however, by increased forced ventilation could produce higher results. Disturbances of the movable structures of the middle ear, due to increased forced ventilation appears probable.

[Changes caused by earmoulds in shape of the formation of the external auditory meatus (author's transl)].

The lateral part of the external auditory meatus is widened by hearing aids. This was found when comparing angles, diameters and volumes of the external auditory meatus in two groups of children. One group of 56 children had bilateral hearing aids, the other group of 48 children of the same age had healthy normal ears and did not use hearing aids. The widening process is increased with the length of time that a hearing aid is used.

[Pantopaque-cisternography- clinical examinations of possible late complications with special regards to neurological findings (author's transl)].

Extensive examinations after couple of months or years after pantopaque-cisternography were performed in 20 patients, in whom no central nervous system diseases were known and in whom no surgery of CNS was previously performed. With only one exception the contrast medium was found intracranially with preference to the sella and to the region of the frontobasis. No connection was found between the amount of pantopaque and the length of time since the performance of cisternography. No late neurological complications were observed.

Cisterna Magna↗

A rare complication of use of the middle ear ventilation tube (PVC).

Purulent otitis media was observed following operations for insertion of middle ear ventilation tubes by the same surgeon in 2.2% of 226 patients. Conservative treatment given with the tube still in situ rarely effected cure, whereas removal of the tube brought about prompt resolution and perforation closure, The cause of these infections remains unknown, but adverse reaction of the mucous membrane to polyvinylchloride could be regarded as a possible cause.

[Pantopaque cisternography in diagnosis of acustic neuromas (author's transl)].

In 6 out of 37 patients, examined by pantopaque cisternography the suspect of a acustic neuroma could be strengthened. All of these tumors showed growth beyond the internal auditory meatus. Smaller intrameatal tumors were not found. The indication for cisternography were made almost according to the demands from Fisch and Wegmüller, therefore it is asked, wether it should not be better to follow the methods of Valvassori who sometimes performes cisternography based on audiometric findings alone. As results of our own experience and similar cases reported elsewhere, this seems justified. Because of the small amount of contrast medium used the side-effects of Pantopaque-cisternography are practically nil.
