[Complications and adverse effects of respiratory physiotherapy].

Physiotherapy of the chest is used to mobilize manually respiratory secretions and to increase the amount of tracheobronchial mucus cleared from the respiratory tract. Today, the term chest physiotherapy has expanded to include a wide variety of manual techniques. Complications of chest physiotherapy have seldom been reported, but when they occurred they were mild or moderately severe. Adverse effects associated with this type of treatment were present in a small proportion of the patients studied and generally of modest clinical significance. Recognizing the nature of the potential for complications and adverse effects of chest physiotherapy enables therapeutists to modify the treatment so that it can be administered safely to critically and chronically ill patients.

[Performance of kinesitherapy by parents in the treatment of cystic fibrosis].

A transverse study was conducted in the form of a written survey in order to evaluate chest physiotherapy performed by parents or the children themselves. Despite the low response rate of 31%, we found that 25% of the children were not treated by a professional physiotherapist. Furthermore, the results also pointed to the failure to elicit a cough during clearance procedure (50% of cases) together with the great disparity in the chest therapy technics. All staff members involved with parents and children with cystic fibrosis should regularly check and adapt the whole treatment programme.

[About vibrations for use in chest physiotherapy. Experimental study].

The objective of the present study is to gauge mechanical and manual external vibrations for a rational use in chest physiotherapy. The observed frequencies are included between 22 and 100 Hz. The efficacy (significantly) is not yet proved and further studies are necessary to define the practical aspects of these vibrations.
