Manipulation of gold nanoparticles in liquid environments using scanning force microscopy

Precise and controlled manipulation of individual gold nanoparticles (deposited on a Si/SiO2 surface) in liquid environments using the tip of a scanning force microscope is reported for the first time. Experiments were performed in deionized water and in ethanol as a prototype for an organic solvent. Analysis of the amplitude signal of the cantilever before and during manipulation reveals that the particles are pushed across the surface, similar to the manipulation of nanoparticles in air.

Study of the Dissolution of the Barium Sulfate (001) Surface with Hydrochloric Acid by Atomic Force Microscopy.

Noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) has been used to investigate the morphological changes of a freshly cleaved (001) surface of barium sulfate (barite) etched with an aqueous solution of 0.1 M HCl at room temperature. Shallow triangular etch pits with a height of 3.6 Å were developed in atomically flat (001) terraces. The etching of the surface was found to proceed in a layer-by-layer dissolution process. Because the crystal structure of barite exhibits a two-fold screw axis parallel to the c axis, "alternating" etch pits were formed, with any two consecutive etch pits pointing opposite to each other. These etch pits became deeper and more elongated along the b axis with time. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

[Recurrent hemolytic-uremic syndrome with positive immunofluorescence].

The hemolytic uremic syndrome is a disease of infancy, its major clinical manifestations include reversible thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and renal failure. Although a great number of patients with HUS have been published, relapses as well as positive immunofluorescence studies are rare findings. In our patient the disease began at age of 7 years and recovered completely. At 10 1/2 years a relapse occurred and despite therapy the patient died two months later. Renal biopsy showed severe arterial and glomerular changes with remarkable similarity to the histological findings in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, which could be explained as secondary hypertensive damage, and dense granular deposition of fibrinogen, IgG, IgA, C3, and Clq along the capillary loops of the glomerulus and throughout the wall of the renal arteries. The clinical data, histological findings, and the particularities of our patient with this special course of HUS are discussed.

[Craniopharyngioma: experience with combined operative and radiotherapy and problems of hormone substitution (author's transl)].

Craniopharyngioma, primarily a benign tumour, is associated with a variety of serious problems due to tumour localization. Access to the tumour during surgery is difficult and total resection can rarely be achieved. Growth of the remaining tumour continues and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, further visual field loss and hormonal disturbances reappear. However, conservative operation in conjunction with radical irradiation shows good results as regards tumour regression and survival with satisfactory quality of life. Irradiation with 50 Gy on average was performed in 5 out of 6 children with remaining tumour or tumour recurrence, and satisfactory results were obtained. In all cases tumour size regressed. Endocrine disturbances could be ascertained by the combined LHRH-TRH-insulin test and the clinical picture. In nearly every case there was finally a complete lack of hormones of the pituitary-hypothalamic axis. Substitution of various hormones became necessary in all cases. Meticulous surveillance of children still undergoing developmental maturation is mandatory. All six children are well and lead a nearly normal life.

[Hypercalcaemia as first symptom of acute lymphatic leukaemia: aetiology and treatment (author's transl)].

A hypercalcaemic crisis was the first manifestation of acute lymphatic leukaemia in a two-year-old girl. Admiinistration of prednisolone improved the child's general condition but obscured the true diagnosis which was made only when another hypercalcaemic crisis occurred. Unexplained hypercalcaemia should make one consider the possibility of a malignant blood dyscrasia. Forced diuresis, cortisone and mithramycin can be used therapeutically to achieve a rapid fall in calcium level.

[Acute lymphatic leukaemia in children: re-examination after remission of at least five years (author's transl)].

Full remission of more than five years was observed in nine of 24 children with acute lymphatic leukaemia. They had been treated by a scheme similar to the Pinkel VII one, and all had been discharged from treatment. The immune status, bone marrow, radiological, neurological and psychosomatic studies, as well as various laboratory tests indicated that in seven of the children the findings, are essentially normal. But two children have lasting severe organ damage, portal fibrosis in one and bilateral intracerebral calcification in the other, both presumably due to the methotrexate treatment.

[Plasma cell granuloma of the lung (author's transl)].

Case-report of a plasma cell granuloma of the lung found in a girl aged 8 years 6 months. The lesion of the lung was first interpreted as a metastasis of a suspected primary tumor in the right calf. It was only later that plasmacell granuloma of the lung was diagnosed. Plasma cell granuloma of the lung often gives rise to confusion, a fact illustrated by the various names applied to it, e.g. pseudosarcoma, postinflammatory pseudotumor of the lung, histiocytoma, xanthoma, fibroxanthoma, xanthogranuloma. On histological examination, this tumor consists of proliferations mainly of plasmacells and reticulo-endothelial cells, with some polymorphism and some giant cells. The tumor appears as a single, sharply circumscribed mass, is usually asymptomatic and therefore found mostly on routine-chest-films. Rarely is it found as an obstructive mass in the bronchi or in the trachea. The histopathogenesis of the tumor is not known, the lesion benign. Treatment is resection.

[Asplenia and DIC (author's transl)].

3 cases of severe septic shock are described; a 5 month old girl with congenital hyposplenia, a 2 3/12 year old boy splenectomized because of microspherozytosis and a 11 6/12 year old boy splenectomized because of Hodgkin's disease. In 2 cases pneumococci were found in the blood cultures. In all 3 cases the coagulation analysis showed a consumption coagulopathy. Intravenous streptokinase treatment was applied in addition to general treatment for shock and antibiotic therapy. 2 patients survived and made a complete recovery, whereas the 2 year old boy died. The histological findings showed a severe DIC. In the Department of Surgery, Innsbruck, 44 children have been splenectomized during the last 6 years, 38 of whom we were able to follow up on for an average of 3.3 years. After an average of 1.2 years following splenectomy, 4 patients (including the 3 cases mentioned above) contracted acute septicaemia; a further patient also incurring a probable sepsis with DIC. 3 of these 5 children died, representing a morbidity rate of 13% and a mortality rate of 8%. The mortality rate is thus as high as that caused by the primary disease, indicating the urgency of prophylaxis for infections of this kind. 3 prophylactic forms of treatment are suggested: protection with penicillin, active immunization with polyvalent pneumococcal antigen and spleen preservation whenever possible.

[Duodenal ulcer in a newborn infant with gastro-intestinal hemorrhage (author's transl)].

A newborn infant was transferred to our hospital because of gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, starting a few hours after birth. Because of fetal distress a cesarean section had been necessary. The clinical examination as well as the results of the laboratory tests revealed nothing abnormal. In an upper gastro-intestinal X-ray series there was evidence for a duodenal ulcer. Under conservative treatment the baby recovered and has remained in a good condition without any bleeding episode until now. A repeat upper gastro-intestinal X-ray series was done at the age of 5 months and no evidence of ulceration could be found. The incidence and the reason of such an ulcer in the new born period is shortly discussed.

[The differentiation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes by immunological methods. III. Results in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (author's transl)].

In 47 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia surface markers were evaluated on mononuclear cells of the peripheral blood as well as in some cases on bone marrow lymphocytes. The lymphocytes were characterized by their binding capacity for sheep red blood cells, the demonstration of Fc-receptors, complement receptors as well as surface immunoglobulins. In 6 of 23 untreated patients the blasts bound sheep red blood cells spontaneously (T-ALL), in two of these six cases the lymphoblasts had simultaneously receptors for complement. In a further patients the lymphoblasts had complement- and Fc-receptors. The blasts of 16 of 23 patients were negative in respect to the markers tested (O-ALL). By comparing two groups of patients--one with positive cells, one unreactive--the clinical features differed: the marker positive group showed a predominance of male patients, 5 of 7 patients had a massive mediastinal mass and the remission rate was lower than in the group with positive blasts. 24 patients in remission under maintance treatment had a decreased percentage of rosette forming lymphocytes as well as lymphocytes with surface immunoglobulins and Fc-receptors. There existed some correlation between the percentage of rosette forming lymphocytes and the clinical course: patients with complications had lower percentages of rosette forming lymphocytes than patients with a favourable course.

[Complete parenteral nutrition in childhood].

Complete parenteral nutrition by means of continuous intravenous drip into large veins, over a long period, has already shown itself to be of therapeutic use in the field of pediatrics. While the nutritional-physiological aspect of this therapeutic method is clear -- it depends on an accurate and sufficient supply of water, salts, glucose, amino-acids, triglycerides and essential fatty acids, vitamins and trace elements -- in practice it presents difficulties which though often serious are not insurmountable. Especially are to cite the septic complications, which are nearly imperceptible during their development. They are only to accept in view of the often almost hopeless condition of the child, who would be lost without complete parenteral feeding. Similar problems arise through metabolic complications which are caused non rarely only by insufficient dosages and lack of careful supervision but it is generally possible to correct these at an early stage. Complete parenteral nutrition must be exactly indicated. It is indeed a great therapeutic help, particularly when over a longer period -- at least a week or longer -- oral nutrition is impossible or insufficient. Practicall experiences will be reported. A retrospective assessment of 50 cases has shown the tendency (through taking too much care?) to hold the quantity of liquids and supply of calories too short and to administer too much carbohydrates and too little fat.
