Treatment of renal hypertension in children by captopril.

Nine children aged 2 months to 13 (mean 6.6) years with renal hypertension were treated with captopril. The treatment lasted for 1.5 to 14 months. Maintenance doses ranged between 1 and 5 mg/kg/day. Good effect was achieved with captopril in children with normal renal function and in mild renal insufficiency. In patients with end-stage renal disease when dialysis failed to maintain normal body water captopril was ineffective.

Pharmacological evidence for selective inhibition of gastric acid secretion by telenzepine, a new antimuscarinic drug.

The new antisecretory drug, telenzepine (4,9-dihydro-3-methyl-4-[(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)acetyl]-10H-thieno-[3,4 - b][1,5]benzodiazepin-10-one), was investigated for its inhibition of functionally intact muscarinic receptors involved in gastric acid secretion in rabbit fundic glands, perfused mouse stomach in vitro, perfused rat stomach in situ, gastric fistula in rats and dogs with a Heidenhain pouch. The effects on these receptors were contrasted with effects on receptors located on smooth muscle and heart, i.e. isolated rat urinary bladder, stomach and atrium. The results were compared to those values obtained with nonselective antimuscarinic drugs (N-methylscopolamine, atropine) and the selective M-1 antagonist pirenzepine. Telenzepine was found to be 4-10 times more potent than pirenzepine with respect to depressing both gastric acid secretion and smooth muscle or myocardial responses. Based on -log EC50 and pA2 values, both drugs exhibited a similar selectivity profile differing from the pattern of effects observed with atropine or a second reference compound, zolenzepine. As compared with atropine, telenzepine exhibited a 5 fold higher relative affinity to muscarinic receptors involved in gastric acid secretion. It was concluded that telenzepine is selective to discriminate between muscarinic receptors mediating gastric acid secretion and affecting muscle contractility and that this finding supports the concept of muscarinic receptor heterogeneity.

[Luminal deviation of the normal pancreatic duct a post mortem x-ray study (author's transl)].

The study was performed in 64 post mortem ductograms of pancreata, missing any inflammatory and/or neoplastic alterations in extensive histological investigations by whole organ sections. The pancreatic duct was measured in the radiograms. From these measured values and by mean of a computer program of a cubic spline function the straightened pancreatic ducts were plotted. The number, the length and the amplitude of ductal deviations were measured in these plots. Luminal dilatations were found in all organs, ranging from 0.5 mm to 6 mm and more. Their frequency was significantly lowered in young people (11-30 years).

[A contribution to the early diagnosis and differential diagnosis of bladder neoplasms by means of immunological methods].

According to the present examinations it is pretty probable that already in early histological forms of the carcinoma of the urinary bladder the EM-test is able to indicate immunologically malignity, i.e. that the papillary non-infiltrating carcinoma of the transitional cell as well as the carcinoma in situ of the urinary bladder (23) also immunologically behave like tumors of the bladder. In differential-diagnostic questions concerning the organ localisation of the primary tumor the EM-test seems to give valuable references. Histologically not unequivocally malignant tumors of the bladder with positive results in the EM-test should be submitted to an exacter examination and control.

Sociodemographic correlates of alexithymia.

The association between alexithymia and sociodemographic variables is not well understood. Previous studies using the current 20-item and previous 26-item versions of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) have shown inconsistent associations with age, sex, socioeconomic status, and years of education. We tested 380 subjects from the community stratified equally across sex, five age groups, and three socioeconomic classes. In addition to the TAS-20, we also administered the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS), a behavioral measure of the ability to be aware of and represent emotions in words, a core component of alexithymia. The TAS-20 and LEAS were each correlated with age, sex, socioeconomic status (SES), and years of education (P < .01) in the same direction and to approximately the same degree. Alexithymia (or low emotional awareness) is associated with older age, male sex, lower SES, and fewer years of education. The TAS-20 and LEAS are only slightly correlated (r = -.19, n = 380, P < .001), but their correlation is largely accounted for by their shared variance with these demographic variables. The convergence of findings with these two quite different measures and the nature of their overlap support the validity of these associations between alexithymia and sociodemographic variables.

Pervasive emotion recognition deficit common to alexithymia and the repressive coping style.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has demonstrated a deficit in the ability to recognize emotions in alexithymic individuals. The repressive coping style is thought to preferentially impair the detection of unpleasant compared with pleasant emotions, and the degree of deficit is typically thought to be less severe than in alexithymia. We compared emotion recognition ability in both individuals with alexithymia and those with the repressive coping style. METHODS: Three hundred seventy-nine subjects completed the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale, the Marlowe-Crowne Scale (a measure of repressive defensiveness), the Bendig Short Form of the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale, and the Perception of Affect Task. The Perception of Affect Task consists of four 35-item emotion recognition subtasks: matching sentences and words, faces and words, sentences and faces, and faces and photographs of scenes. The stimuli in each subtask consist of seven emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise, and neutral) depicted five times each. Recognition accuracy results were collapsed across subtasks within each emotion category. RESULTS: Highly alexithymic subjects (for all, p<.01) and those with low emotional awareness (for all, p<.001) were consistently less accurate in emotion recognition in all seven categories. Highly defensive subjects (including repressors) were less accurate in the detection of anger, sadness, fear, and happiness (for all, p<.05). Furthermore, scores on the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale accounted for significantly more variance in performance on the Perception of Affect Task than scores on the Marlowe-Crowne Scale (p<.01). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that alexithymia and the repressive coping style are each associated with impairments in the recognition of both pleasant and unpleasant emotions and that the two styles of emotional self-regulation differ more in the magnitude than in the quality of these impairments.
