In 2000 in Italy about 470,000 workers found jobs provided by Temporary Work Agencies, i.e., more than twice the number in 1999. Temporary Work is an expanding phenomenon since it well suits the flexibility requirements of business: 77% of Temporary Work is in the manufacturing industry, involving mostly unskilled workers. The young age, low level of qualification, poor training, and lack of knowledge of the working environment are factors that can favour occupational accidents. There are studies that relate the frequency of labour accidents to the level of training and job experience. There are no data in the literature about occupational accidents during temporary work. Our study concerns sixteen temporary work Agencies that employed more than 250,000 manual workers in 2000. From the occupational accident registers of these agencies, we analysed all accidents concerning manual workers employed during 2000, with reference to: the number of accidents with up to three days prognosis, age, sex, nationality, prognosis pattern and cause. The agencies supplied data regarding the number of hours worked during 2000. We considered 5259 accidents: the overall frequency index (FI) was 92.1, with a considerable difference between the three main agencies (87.5) and the others. The mean age accident was 27.8 years, mean duration of sick leave 13.7 days, and the main causes were work tools (51.5%); 76% of the accidents concerned unskilled manual workers. The above indexes are definitely higher than those provided by INAIL (italian compulsory insurances) for the metalworking (38.1), construction (47.7) and mining (58.8) sectors during 1997. There is evidence that temporary work is related to an increased risk of occupational accidents. Further studies are required to confirm this evidence.
Seventy five adult patients suffering from partial epilepsy were investigated by MRI. Results were then compared with those obtained with CT scan and EEG analysis. The interval between the two neuroradiological studies did not exceed five years. MRI and CT showed abnormalities respectively in 45 and 55% of patients, MRI showed a better sensitivity in detecting ischemic or atrophy-gliosis chronic focal alterations. In the remaining lesions such as tumors, vascular malformations, cysts and diffuse atrophies, where often an urgent diagnosis is necessary, both tests were equally sensitive. EEG showed alterations in 80% of patients and agreed with results of CT scan and MRI in about 80% of cases.
D-Gluconic acid and alpha-carboxymethyl-polyethylene-glycol-omega-methyl ether (PEG) (mol wt 550) were covalently bound at N alpha-amino group of H-Phe-Arg-pNa to study the effect on hydrolysis by arginyl-hydrolases of chromogenic substrates containing high hydrophilic and amphiphilic groups. For comparison, epsilon-aminocaproyl-, sarcosyl- and succinyl-Phe-Arg-pNa were also synthesized. The obtained compounds were assayed as substrates for porcine pancreatic kallikrein, horse urinary kallikrein, tonin and beta-trypsin. Both PEG- and gluconyl-Phe-Arg-pNa had kcat values of hydrolysis 2-4 times higher than the N-acetyl derivative for all the studied enzymes. epsilon-NH2caproyl-Phe-Arg-pNa resulted in the best chromogenic substrate described for the two tissue kallikreins. The PEG-derivative and D-gluconyl groups were also introduced in the N alpha-amino group of H-Arg-pNa and assayed as beta-trypsin substrates. In comparison with benzoyl-Arg-pNa, the D-gluconyl group had no effect on Km but reduced the kcat value more than 15 times; however, PEG-Arg-pNa was hydrolyzed with similar Km but with kcat 5 times higher. The presence of D-gluconyl and PEG groups in the chromogenic substrate molecules increased their water solubility significantly.
A case of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis with a benign course was present in a 66-year-old patient. A year after the acute phase of the illness, the patient continued to suffer from inability to fix verbal material in memory. During the acute phase, cerebral NMR revealed a large evolving lesion in the right temporal region, and an old lesion located in the same region of the opposite hemisphere. From the medical history, we learned that the patient, 35 years earlier, suffered a similar episode, including a short-term memory deficit. In the following study, we will discuss this case report in relation to data found in the literature dealing with memory deficit, caused by mono and bilateral, temporal lesions.
A case of cerebral angioma: non-invasive assessments. A 65-year-old woman, suffering from epileptic seizures since the age of 6, was examined. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasounds, SEPs and EEG brain mapping by means of median nerve stimulation, were performed, followed by a NMR of the brain, which revealed an arteriovenous malformation in the left hemisphere (frontal and parietal lobe). By comparing the results of the neurophysiological tests, the diagnostic value of TCD, confirmed by the neuroradiologic findings, was established. EEG and SEPs were also abnormal, but their actual effectiveness in clinical studies is discussed. We conclude that these electrophysiological examinations do not allow a reliable diagnosis as with TCD.
