Statistically reliable short-term periodic changes in the number of bacteria were found in the surface ooze layer and, to a less extent, in the bottom water layer. The time of doubling of the bacterial number can be calculated approximately by counting bacterial cells in the ooze layer every day. An inverse correlation was established between the bacterial number in the surface ooze layer and in the bottom water layer.
Microorganisms were studied by capillary microscopy in the surface layer of ooze and in the bottom layer of water in the ore field of the lake Krasnoye. The lake overgrowing of iron-maganese organisms differ from that in the second ooze profile. The growth of the iron-maganese microorganisms on Euglena was found, and the character of their relationship is discussed.

The total incidence of bacteria and the number of ammonificators were assayed to the direct count and plating techniques, respectively, several times within the vegetative period in the course of ten days under the field conditions. The incidence of the former and the latter varied though not in parallel, and the variations were temporal. The total bacterial incidence depended considerably on soil water content; in ammonificators, moisture determined only the level at which their number changed. The character of oscillations is suggestive of the rate of microbial growth at different periods of the vegetative stage. Daily determination of their number several times within the same period may result in contradictory conclusions.

Rhythmical temporal changes in the number of bacterial populations inhabiting the surface ooze layer and the water layer above it have been found to depend on two processes: (1) the ability of bacteria for periodic intensive growth followed by death of the cells and (2) the participation of zooplankton in consuming the bacterial cells for nourishment. The total bacterial number in samples depends on which of the two processes prevails.
The total number of bacterial cells containing iron and lacking it was determined daily within relatively short period of time (1--3 weeks) in the course of three years. The total bacterial number and the character of its changes in the surface ooze layer and in the water near the bottom depended on the environmental conditions. The content of oxygen was taken as an index of environmental changes.
