[Symptoms experienced by people in vicinity of base stations: II/ Incidences of age, duration of exposure, location of subjects in relation to the antennas and other electromagnetic factors].

This is the 2nd part of a survey study conducted on 530 people (270 men, 260 women) living or not in vicinity of cellular phone base stations. Comparison of complaints frequencies for 16 Non Specific Health Symptoms was done with the CHI-Square test with Yates correction. Our results show significant increase (p < 0.05) in relation with age of subjects (elder subjects are more sensitive) and also, that the facing location is the worst position for some symptoms studied, especially for distances till 100 m from base stations. No significant difference is observed in the frequency of symptoms related to the duration of exposure (from < 1 year to > 5 years), excepted for irritability significantly increased after > 5 years. Other electromagnetic factors (electrical transformers, radio-television transmitters,...) have effects on the frequency of some symptoms reported by the subjects.

[Video screen exposure and 6-sulfatoxymelatonin urinary excretion in women].

A study in blind conditions was conducted on 13 women (mean age < 30 years). Six women worked at least four hours per day, five days a week, since more than one month, in front of a video screen constituted the exposed group. Radioimmunoassay of 6-sulfatoxymelatonin was done on urine collected during night. Results were analysed by a non parametric rank-test (Mann-Withney). It was observed an important (- 54%) and significant lower level (p < 0.01) of 6-sulfatoxymelatonin in urine of women exposed to video screen.

[Investigation on the health of people living near mobile telephone relay stations: I/Incidence according to distance and sex].

A survey study using questionnaire was conducted in 530 people (270 men, 260 women) living or not in vicinity of cellular phone base stations, on 18 Non Specific Health Symptoms. Comparisons of complaints frequencies (CHI-SQUARE test with Yates correction) in relation with distance from base station and sex, show significant (p < 0.05) increase as compared to people living > 300 m or not exposed to base station, till 300 m for tiredness, 200 m for headache, sleep disturbance, discomfort, etc. 100 m for irritability, depression, loss of memory, dizziness, libido decrease, etc. Women significantly more often than men (p < 0.05) complained of headache, nausea, loss of appetite, sleep disturbance, depression, discomfort and visual perturbations. This first study on symptoms experienced by people living in vicinity of base stations shows that, in view of radioprotection, minimal distance of people from cellular phone base stations should not be < 300 m.

[Symptoms reported by mobile cellular telephone users].

A survey study, using questionnaire, was conducted in 161 students and workers in a French engineering school on symptoms experienced during use of digital cellular phones. A significant increase in concentration difficulty (p < 0.05) was reported by users of 1800-MHz (DCS) cellular phones compared to 900-MHz (GSM) phone users. In users of cellular phones, women significantly (p < 0.05) complained more often of sleep disturbance than men. This sex difference for sleep complaint is not observed between women and men non-users of cellular phone. The use of both cellular phones and VDT significantly (p < 0.05) increased concentration difficulty. Digital cellular phone users also significantly (p < 0.05) more often complained of discomfort, warmth, and picking on the ear during phone conversation in relation with calling duration per day and number of calls per day. The complaint of warmth on the ear might be a signal to users for stopping the call.

[Danger of cellular telephones and their relay stations].

Cellular phones and their base stations emit pulsed microwaves in the environment. Cellular phone users are exposed in the near field and, under this condition, a large part of the electromagnetic energy is absorbed by the head, leading to an increased brain temperature. The general population is exposed under far field conditions to an electromagnetic intensity depending on the distance from the base station, passive re-emitters, the number of communications maintained by the base station and their position in relation to antennae (in front of the antenna or behind). Biological effects have been reported, such as radiofrequency sickness, electroencephalographic and blood pressure changes and also cancer risks in humans and animals exposed to microwave irradiation. Some European countries (Italy, France, Belgium, etc.) have taken measures to protect their populations.

[Cellular telephones and their relay stations: a health risk?].

Portable cellular phones and their relay stations emit ultra-high frequency waves (microwaves) with amplitude modulation and extremely low frequency pulsation. The user is absorbed by the head and reaches the nervous structures leading to increased brain temperature. The general population is exposed to a distant field with an electromagnetic intensity which depends on the distance from the emitting antennas, the presence of "passive re-emitters", and the number of communications processed by the relay station. Among the main biological effects, "radio-frequency disease", electroencephalogram disturbances, and blood pressure disorders as well as risk of cancer have been observed in humans and animals.

Optic tract syndrome secondary to metastatic breast cancer.

PURPOSE: To report a patient who was initially examined with optic tract syndrome caused by a focal metastasis to the lateral geniculate body and optic tract. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: A 44-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer was initially examined with normal central visual acuity, afferent pupillary defect, homonymous hemianopia, and optic atrophy. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates that an isolated optic tract syndrome may occur as a result of metastatic lesions to the lateral geniculate body and optic tract.

Membrane immunoglobulin is characterized by distinct structural subpopulations.

Membrane immunoglobulins are integral proteins on B cell surfaces that bind foreign antigens and are critically involved in the regulation of the immune response. Based upon the model of serum IgG, it has been assumed that membrane immunoglobulins are essentially four chain disulfide-linked structures of the form H2L2, where H represents an immunoglobulin heavy chain, and L a light chain. We show here that membrane immunoglobulins of the mu and delta isotypes are present on spleen cell surfaces in a much more diverse group of disulfide linked structures. In some cases mIg is linked into structures as large as H5L5, while in other instances mu or delta chains appear to be linked by disulfide interactions to non-immunoglobulin molecules. These various structural complexes may represent distinct functional entities, as the association of mIg with the cytoskeleton after mIg cross-linking appears to depend upon its structural subgroup.

[Immunogenicity of 2 murine B16 melanoma variants with high metastatic potential].

The expression of tumor-associated transplantation antigens (TATA) by two metastatic variants, isolated from B16 melanoma in vivo, was examined. The first, YB16 melanoma (amelanotic), was selectioned after a successive s. c. transplantations of B16 melanoma cells on the coisogenic Yellow AY/a mutant mice of C57BL/6J mice. The second, MB16 melanoma, characterized by a variable pigmentation, was obtained from a s. c. transplantation of YB16 melanoma cells on C57BL/6J mice. The comparison of TATA expressed by the two variants and the B16 melanoma, made between different modes of inducing tumor-rejection activity, revealed that i) these two variants failed to induce an autologous antitumor response, ii) they were resistant to crossed immunization with an immunogenic preparations of B16 melanoma and iii) only MB16 melanoma preparations reduced significantly the tumoral incidence of B16 melanoma cells. These data leads us to suggest i) that the s. c. transplantation of B16 melanoma cells on Yellow AY/a mice resulted in the selection of nonimmunogenic, amelanotic and metastatic cell population of YB16 melanoma and ii) the existence of an epigenetic regulation of melanogenesis and expression of TATA in MB16 melanoma cells carried on C57BL/6J mice.

[Brauer-Buschke-Fischer keratoderma palmo-plantare punctata. Brauer's keratoderma dissipatum hereditarium palmoplantare].

Keratosis punctata palmaris et plantaris (KPPP) of Buschke-Fischer-Brauer is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by disseminated cup-shaped horny papules with central depression containing keratotic plugs. The disease is circumscribed on the palms and soles; associated abnormalities are unusual. The microscopic findings show normal structure of the epidermis with massive orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis and acanthosis; dermis is slightly compressed below the epidermis level by the keratotic plugs and free of inflammatory infiltrates. We describe a female of 37 years old (proband) affected by KPPP and her familiar pedigree showing that dermatosis is dominantly inherited. The clinical features of KPPP are like the first reports of Brauer (keratoderma dissipatum hereditarium palmoplantare). The criteria used to diagnose and classify the hereditary palmoplantar keratoderma are also discussed.

[Crow-Fukase syndrome (POEMS syndrome). The first Italian presentation of a case and review of the literature].

A 42-year-old Italian man affected with a multisystemic disease is presented. The main features were: polyneuropathy, organomegaly (liver, spleen and lymph nodes enlargement), endocrinopathy (loss of libido, low plasmatic levels of testosterone), monoclonal protein (k-light chains only in 100-fold-concentrated urine sample, without other signs of plasmocytic proliferation), skin changes. Clinical skin alterations were striking: diffuse thickening, hyperpigmentation, hyperhidrosis , hypertrichosis, while histo- and immunopathological examination of skin biopsies showed proliferation of dermal collagen fibers and deposition of melanin in the epidermis. These findings were suggestive for the diagnosis of Crow-Fukase (POEMS) syndrome, associated with peculiar angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's disease). The patient was followed up for 15 months with steroids, systemic chemotherapy, plasma-exchange and immunomodulating drugs. A massive anasarca complicated the picture leading him to death. Actually the pathomechanisms of this rare disease have not been fully elucidated. The relations between this syndrome and some malignant lymphoproliferative diseases (i.e. osteosclerotic myeloma) are controversial; at least a part of its features could be either reactive or tissue-specific-antibody mediated. A genetic influence should be suggested from the Japanese reports.

B16 melanoma development in black mice exposed to low-level microwave radiation.

The effect of low-level microwave exposure, 2,450 MHz, at a power density of 1 mW/cm2 and specific absorption rate of 1.2 mW/g, continuous waves (CW) or pulsed waves (PW), 2.5 h/day, 6 sessions/week until death (up to 690 h of irradiation), has been studied in black C57/6J mice with B16 melanoma. The results show that no significant effects are observed on tumor development or on survival times compared to controls, or between CW- and PW-treated animals.

The effects of carbon monoxide on persistent changes in young rat heart: cardiomegaly, tachycardia and altered DNA content.

Newborn rat pups that inhale 500 ppm carbon monoxide (CO) for 32 days and develop increased heart mass (i.e. cardiomegaly) show persistent cardiomegaly and elevated resting heart rate as adults. Studies were carried out to explore the relationship of these phenomena to CO concentration and initial cardiomegaly using exposures of 350, 500 and 700 ppm CO. Initial cardiomegaly was greater in the right ventricle free wall (RV) than in the left ventricle plus interventricular septum (LV + S) at all three CO concentrations, and RV mass excess increased with CO concentration. Initial RV cardiomegaly was greater at 350 and 700 ppm CO in females than in males. Persistent cardiomegaly in the RV also increased with CO concentration, and was significantly greater in the females. Persistent cardiomegaly in the RV increased with initial cardiomegaly but at a decreasing rate at the higher CO concentrations, and when expressed as a percentage of initial cardiomegaly (i.e. 'efficiency'), the relative response was greatest at 500 ppm CO. For LV + S, efficiency of development of persistent cardiomegaly was greatest at 350 ppm CO. Persistent tachycardia increased with CO concentration in males but failed to do so in females, and was only weakly correlated with degree of persistent cardiomegaly. Thus, persistent cardiomegaly and persistent tachycardia (in males) are related to CO concentration. Myocardial DNA content of 32-day-old juveniles was significantly increased at 350 and 700 ppm CO. Adult DNA content of the RV was significantly elevated at 350 ppm CO (females) and continued to rise with CO concentration. DNA concentrations of the RV and LV were increased at 700 ppm CO.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Cryotherapy of metastatic B16 melanoma. Consequences of the immunogenic potential].

A significant inhibition of B16 melanoma growth and prolonged survival of mice, immunized with cryolysat at 10 M omega of B16 melanoma cells, are obtained in an immunoprophylactic assays. These results show that the freezing maintains tumor rejection activity of tumor antigen. Immunization with frozen cells or their crude butanol extract induce only an inhibition of tumor growth without a prolongation of survival.
