Peculiarities of the thyroid gland structure (with special reference to the presence of ganglion cells).

We have performed a study on the comparative structure of the thyroid gland in several species of mammals (rat, cat, dog, lamb, pig, cow, and man). We have described the structural differences among them, paying special attention to the distribution of connective tissue, the intrafollicular and parafollicular cells. In the thyroid gland, we can confirm the existence of nerve cells, either isolated or forming vegetative ganglions in the interfollicular spaces, in some of the species studied, especially in the rat and the dog.

Animals

Functional structure of human auditory ossicles.

In a series of 52 auditory ossicles, their structure and functional significance were studied, with special reference to the patterns of force transmission. The significance of the different degrees of cavitation in the ossicles as well as their eventual pathological significance are also discussed.

Humans

Morphological variations of human ossicula tympani.

In a series of 100 cases, morphological variations of human ossicula tympani were studied. These have seldom been considered either in classic or recent descriptions. Among them, the malleus and stapes are the most variable ones. A geometric model is proposed to systematically study any variation from the typical ossicles. These morphological variations of ossicles could be related to age, sex, race, and could bring out peculiarities in acoustic transmission.

Electron microscopic studies on the pars intermedia of the rat under stress.

Using electron microscopy, we have studied the pars intermedia (PI) of the pituitary gland of Wistar rat under psychogenic stress, finding a considerable increase in dark cells. The cells of the PI present striking vacuoles in all their cytoplasms, increasing up to a phase of total cellular disintegration. We have also observed a cell type, not found in the animal control group, of regular size and electrondense matrix of medium contrast.
