[Prevalence of type 1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in African patients residing in Catalonia].

278 black patients from West Africa, living in Maresme, a coastal area north of Barcelona were studied in order to determine the prevalence of HIV-1 infection. During the first period (1984-86), 102 patients were studied, 3 of them were positive for HIV-2, but none was positive for HIV-1. In the second period (1987-89), 176 patients were studied and 15 were positive for HIV-1. Sexual intercourse with prostitutes of low social level was the only risk factor in all of them. Nine of these 15 patients had other STD, 4 parasite infections, 5 AIDS related-syndrome and 2 AIDS. These findings alert us to the high prevalence of HIV-1 infection in this group of patients (8.5%) and call for stricter measures to enforce hygiene in the area of prostitution.

A significant geographical area for the study of the epidemiological and ecological aspect of Mediterranean sporothricosis.

Two cases of sporothricosis originating from the same geographical area (Province of Barcelona) are described, including the circumstances of infection and the isolation of a wild strain of Sporothrix schenckii at the same locality. This finding could classify this particular area as a zone of interest in the epidemiological and ecological study of the mediterranean sporothricosis.

[Norwegian scabies].

A typical case of norwegian scabies is reported in a patient with diabetes and chronic lymphoid leukaemia under immunosuppressive therapy. Clinical differential diagnosis, diagnosis procedures, and frequent development of an epidemic of common scabies in contacts are emphasized.

[Mast cells in the skin of rats during development].

The number of mast cells in the skin of the rat increases from the 17th day of the embryonic period to the end of the first postnatal month in the dorsum of the trunk and the head, while in the overlip skin the peak values are reached at the end of the first postnatal week. In the adult animal, the normal values are about one third of the maximum values in all areas. The number of mast cells decreases during the three first days after incised skin injuries; later on, their number increases up to the tenth day, and subsequently decreases, reaching normal values at the end of the second week. These patterns parallel the increase in fibrillary proteins, the development of vascularization and growth of hair follicles in the different scar tissue in skin injuries, respectively. A trophic affect of mast cells may be postulated. This could be exerted by two pathways: an indirect one, related to the vasoactive action of histamine, an a direct one, showing the increased rate of cell división induced by histamine in cultures of epidermal cells. The addition of cimetidine inhibits this stimulating action of histamine; because of this, the stimulating effect of histamine appears to be mediated by H2 receptors.

Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis.

Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis is usually associated with guttate hyperkeratosis, xerosis, and lentiginosis not related to the patient's age. Histologically, hypopigmented macules show remarkably decreased melanin, decreased DOPA-oxidase activity and a decreased number of melanosomes in the melanocytes with predominance of Stages I and II and small sizes. The epidermis is always atrophic. When scales are removed by scraping, hyperkeratotic lesions show, clinically and histologically, variable degrees of hypomelanosis; thus suggesting a relationship with the hypopigmented macules. These data suggest that idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis is the result of an early aging of the skin.

[Nodular hidradenoma. Clinical comments, histology and therapeutics apropos of 2 cases].

The clinico-pathological and therapeutics features of two cases of nodular hidradenoma are reported. The polymorphic microscopic picture that characterizes this peculiar tumor can be seen in one of our observations. The other case belongs to the variety called "clear cell hidradenoma". The latter of big size and with local adenopathies showed a prompt regression to treatment with bleomycin.

[Becker's nevus associated with a smooth muscle hamartoma].

A new case of Becker's nevus associated with smooth muscle hamartoma is reported. This is the third case reported in the literature. The different associations reported in the Becker's nevus give support to the mesenchymal-epithelial interactions.

[Multiple minute digitate hyperkeratosis (a paraneoplastic system?)].

A case of "Multiple Minuta and Digitata Hyperkeratosis" related to a carcinoma of the larynx is reported. The improvement of the cutaneous lesions after surgical treatment of the carcinoma suggests the possibility of considering this peculiar skin disorder as a paraneoplasic symptom.
