The use of transport ventilators during air medical transport is influenced by the patient's needs, the experience of the transport crew, and the type of aircraft used. It is important to note that no single transport ventilator is suitable for all situations. Both environmental and operational attributes need to be considered when making a purchase. Hidden among these is the cost. When all of these considerations are balanced, the transport ventilator can be both practical and beneficial for patient care.

Biomedical technology: using it during patient transport.

The purpose of this article has been to discuss and present some of the current biomedical technology available for patient transport. Recommendations were offered concerning the evaluation of these products, so that they can be effectively used in the air medical environment. There is one step yet that needs to be taken. This step involves identifying the most appropriate application of this technology to the care of the patient. As asked at the beginning of this article, how many pumps and monitors are needed for safe and high-quality patient transport? The answer to that question is not within the scope of this article, but pieces to the answer are. Through research, those of us who provide care during transport should be able to answer this question and develop guidelines for the use of biomedical technology when caring for the patient during air medical transport.

Pediatric trauma patients: differences and implications for emergency nurses.

Caring for the pediatric trauma patient can be one of the most difficult and rewarding challenges an emergency nurse faces. Being aware of sources of trauma, understanding growth and development and the differences between the adult and pediatric patient, keeping the appropriate equipment for pediatric resuscitation, and being prepared emotionally ensure that the needs of the pediatric trauma patient can be better met in any emergency department.

Foundation for aeromedical research. Past, present and future.

Research is vital for the future of air medical transport. It is not only needed to prove the medical benefits and safety of air medical transport, but also to find out the efficacy of using rotor- and fixed-wing aircraft to move patients. Moreover, in order to grow, the air medical transport profession must integrate new technologies and methods through development and testing.
