The role of cognitive cueing in eliciting vocal variability.

Variation in duration and frequency during three readings of each of eight sentences by 9 normal and 4 voice-disordered subjects are compared. Instructions to the subjects varied with respect to the amount and type of cognitive cueing presented in the trials, and the sentences were read in random order. Variability in fundamental frequency (F0) was greater when pitch variation was specifically cued. Also, the portion of the sentence that was cued had greater variability in F0 than other parts of the sentence. Variation in fundamental frequency was significantly greater in the cued versus uncued sentence trials for the voice-disordered subjects but not for the normal subjects. However, all subjects exhibited significantly greater duration for cued versus uncued readings of the same sentences. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Effects of stimulation techniques on vocal responses: implications for assessment and treatment.

During voice evaluation and treatment it is customary for clinicians to elicit samples of the vowel /a/ from clients using various elicitation techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of four commonly used stimulation tasks on the laryngeal mechanism. Eleven female singing students, studying at a university music school, served as subjects for the study. The subjects phonated the vowel /a/ using 4 vocal stimulation techniques: yawn-sigh, gentle onset, focus, and the use of the voiceless fricative. Videoendoscopic and acoustic evaluations of their productions were done. Results show that, in the first 100 ms following the end of the formant transition, these techniques affected voice differently. The fundamental frequency was found to be highest in the yawn-sigh condition, whereas the maximum frequency perturbation was obtained for the voiceless fricative condition. Planned comparisons were made by comparing the data across 2 dimensions: (1) vowels elicited with voiced contexts versus those elicited with voiceless consonantal contexts and (2) vowels elicited with obstruent versus vowels elicited with nonobstruent consonantal contexts. Some changes in acoustic parameters brought about by these stimulation techniques may be explained on the basis of coarticulatory effects of the consonantal context.

Studies on leaching of Cr and Ni from stainless steel utensils in certain acids and in some Indian drinks.

Leachates of Cr and Ni from stainless steel utensils viz., frying pans, bowls and tumblers, have been investigated, by exposing the utensils to decinormal solutions of citric, tartaric and lactic acids and to some common Indian drinks. A comparison of observed results indicate that the complexation of metal ions with organic acid anions is most vital and metal leaching is largely a function of the availability of free anions. The intake of Cr and Ni by human beings has also been calculated.

Studies on aluminium leaching from cookware in tea and coffee and estimation of aluminium content in toothpaste, baking powder and paan masala.

Studies were conducted in order to assess the level of aluminium (Al) in samples of Indian tea, coffee, toothpaste, paan masala (mouth freshener) and baking powder. Leaching of Al from cookware while preparing tea and coffee was also studied. Experiments were also conducted to study the sequential leaching of Al from cookware by preparing tea and coffee in the presence of standard size Al sheets (coupons). A small amount of Al was found to have leached from coupons during preparation of tea. Tea leaves, were found to be a rich source of Al and a maximum of 2.2% Al is extracted in tea infusions. Coffee powder on the other hand was not found to be a rich source of Al. Baking powder was found to be a rich source of Al and 1 kg of cake prepared with 1-3 teaspoon of baking powder may contain 2-12.7 mg of Al in each serving (25 g). Toothpaste also contains a significant quantity of Al, more so, when packed in Al tubes. Ingestion pattern of Al from these items by humans is also discussed.

Prognostic factors in hospitalized children with persistent diarrhea: implications for diet therapy.

A dietary algorithm for management of persistent diarrhea in developing countries, using locally available foods, is yet to be standardized. We identified factors related to poor outcome among 75 malnourished hospitalized male patients aged 3-48 months with persistent diarrhea (> or = 14 days) treated on soy and cereal-based diet (Diet I). The 28 patients with stool output > 60 g/k body weight on the sixth or the seventh treatment day were considered diarrhea treatment failures on Diet I. In the univariate analysis, breast feeding (p < 0.001), carbohydrate malabsorption based on low stool pH or reducing substances > 0.5% (p = 0.03), initial 24-h purge rate (p = 0.001), pneumonia (p = 0.003), or probable septicemia (p = 0.03) were associated with diarrhea treatment failures. Although 16 of these 28 patients responded to systemic antibiotics without dietary modification, all but one of the remaining recovered on a chicken puree, glucose, and oil formulation. Twenty-six children had weight loss after 7 days on Diet I as compared with the postrehydration weight. These children had lower mean age (p = 0.05), lower food intake in the first 24 h (p = 0.05) and during the initial 7 days (p < 0.01), and a higher initial excretion of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (32 vs. 8%; p = 0.01). In the logistic regression model, significant risk factors for diarrhea treatment failures were initial purge rates, carbohydrate malabsorption, and intercurrent systemic infection; only low food intake was associated with significant risk for weight loss. The significant association of diarrhea treatment failures with carbohydrate malabsorption suggests that in the initial diet itself, part of polysaccharide be substituted with sucrose or glucose to obtain the right balance between osmolarity and energy density. Our data suggest that prompt identification and treatment of systemic infection is critical, as its eradication achieved recovery in more than half of the treatment failures without a dietary change.
