Foraminiferal proxies for pollution monitoring in moderately polluted harbors.

Benthic foraminifera are increasingly used as environmental bio-indicators, especially in polluted environments where their sensitivity to pollutants may be expressed by a modification of the assemblages. Eighteen sediment samples were collected in September 2000 in five harbors located in moderately polluted estuaries on the coast of Vendée (France) for the study of foraminiferal assemblages. Ten heavy metals and 13 PAH have been analyzed from the sediments. The marine to continental estuarine gradient has a prevalent influence on the foraminiferal distribution. However, the results show that foraminiferal density and species richness of the assemblages decrease with an increase in heavy metal and PAH concentration, and therefore may be used as pollution indicators. Moreover, the more polluted areas are dominated by the tolerant pioneer species Haynesina germanica that may be used as bio-indicator of pollution, mainly in the uppermost areas.

[Melanotic schwannoma, a tumor with a unpredictable prognosis: case report and review of the literature].

A large sporadic melanotic schwannoma was found at the C2-C3 level in a 66-year-old woman who presented a pyramidal syndrome of all four limbs. The diagnosis was established by histology and immunohistochemical studies and confirmed by ultrastructural examination. Thirty-six cases of melanotic schwannoma located in the spinal cord have been reported in the literature, allowing an analysis of the different histological, clinical, and therapeutic aspects. Usually considered as benign tumor, melanotic schwannoma can recur and progress to malignancy, requiring long-term follow-up, specially in patients with multiple tumors and/or Carney's syndrome.

[Mediastinal lymphatic filariasis].

Wuchereria bancrofti gravid adult female worms were detected in a mediastinal lymph node in a 76-year old man. The patient also had lung carcinoma. A blood cell counts did not show any eosinophilia, and three consecutive night blood samples were also negative for microfilariae. Filariasis and neoplasm association was purely coincidental. Epidemiological and histopathological aspects of adult filariasis are described.

[Pleomorphic adenoma with bilateral pulmonary metastasis].

We report a new case of pleomorphous adenoma of the submaxillary glands with multiple lung metastases. Histological proof was obtained on the thoracoscopic surgical specimen. Clinically, this benign tumor presents as a malignant tumor. Diagnosis has been a subject of debate; surgical resection is indicated. Diagnosis is achieved by elimination in a patient with one or several nodules occurring in a context of recurrent pleomorphous adenoma.
