Sensitivity of proliferating human breast epithelial cells to hypotonic treatment.

An assay for colony-forming cells of breast epithelia derived from normal and malignant surgical specimens is described using an IMR 90 fibroblast feeder layer. Their radiosensitivity (DO: 120-172) is consistent with the proliferative origin of the colonies. Distilled water inhibits proliferation of a proportion of the colony-forming cells after a 1-minute exposure. Continued detection of colonies after 10 minutes of exposure indicates that it is an inefficient way of completely eradicating proliferating epithelial cells of normal and malignant origin.

Marijuana smoking and cold tolerance in man.

Ten men who were marijuana users served as subjects in a study of the effects of marijuana smoking on response to cold. Cold water (28 degrees C for 60 min) and cold air (20 degrees C for 120 min) mediums were utilized with three exposures in each medium. The three exposures followed smoking marijuana, smoking placebo, and a no-smoking control period. Additionally, a breathhold experiment preceded and followed the four smoking periods. Marijuana and placebo smoke were inhaled from a spirometer with each man receiving the smoke of 0.739 g of marijuana and placebo. Smoking marijuana did not greatly modify body heat content, since rectal temperature and most peripheral temperatures were not altered. However, temperatures over voluntary muscles likely to be involved in shivering were elevated. Heat production also greatly increased after marijuana, suggesting that it had stimulated shivering. Marijuana also produced tachycardia and abolished apneic bradycardia. The mechanism of this action is not clear, but some sympathetic involvement is indicated.

Genetic structure in the Garfagnana (Tuscany, Italy): a study of eight protein markers by isoelectric focusing.

The genetic structure of the human population in a random sample of 238 unrelated individuals from Garfagnana (Tuscany, Italy) was studied for five highly polymorphic serum proteins (GC, TF, PI, AHSG, ORM1) and three red cell isozymes (ACP, PGM1, ESD) by isoelectric focusing. Comparison with the gene frequencies from other districts of Tuscany has shown no significant deviation in seven out of eight polymorphic protein systems. Subtype allele frequencies of orosomucoid 1 (ORM1), which were not yet determined in Italian populations, are as follow: ORM1*F1 = 0.586, ORM1*F2 = 0.021, and ORM1*S = 0.393. The most striking features of this unique sample were the relatively high frequencies of PGM1*2B (0.093) and PI*I (0.013) alleles.
