[MRSA infections in otorhinolaryngology].

Infections caused by MRSA in otorhinolaryngology were evaluated in this study. From October 1990 to the end of September 1991, MRSA was detected in one hospitalized patient and 14 outpatients of the otorhinolaryngology department. MRSA was detected in the tonsils of five patients other patients--including four with cancer and other underlying diseases. In two of the four patients with chronic otitis media, otorrhea was stopped by disinfecting external ear toxin. Osteomyelitis of the upper jaw in neonates and infants must be treated in consideration of MRSA, as it is a hospital infection caused by cephem-resistant Staphylococcus.

[Effect of XKJ-001, a crude drug preparation, on body water distribution and water excretion in mice].

The effect of XKJ-001, a crude drug preparation based on Seisho-ekki-to, was investigated on the hematocrit, plasma volume, extracellular and interstitial fluid volumes as well as water excretion in mice. Mice were housed in an animal room maintained at 34 degrees C for 3 d with water and food freely available. While the hematocrit, extracellular and interstitial fluid volumes increased, the plasma volume decreased. These results suggest that the distribution of body water in mice housed at high environmental temperature exhibit the state of water metabolism disorders (Suitai) described in Kampo medicine. After the administration of XKJ-001 (3 g/kg, once a day) for 5 d, mice were housed in an animal room maintained at 34 degrees C for 3 d. The administration of XKJ-001 was allowed to continue on the day 0, day 1 and day 2. XKJ-001 inhibited the increase in hematocrit and the changes in body water distribution of mice induced by high environmental temperature. An effect of XKJ-001 on water excretion in mice was investigated in comparison with hydrochlorothiazide (HTZ). Distilled water (D.W., 100 ml/kg) or bicarbonate saline (B.S., 100 ml/kg) was intraperitoneally injected immediately after the oral administration of XKJ-001 (1.5 g/kg) or HTZ (15 mg/kg). The water excretion was enhanced after 3 h for XKJ-001 and after 6 h for HTZ after the intraperitoneal injection of D.W. As for the intraperitoneal injection of BS, HTZ enhanced the water excretion, however, XKJ-001 exhibited no effect. These results suggest that XKJ-001 has activities on water maldistribution and facilitates the water excretion.

[Effect of chronic desipramine treatment on rat brain adrenergic alpha 2-receptor].

Clonidine has been reported to be effective as an alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist. Locomotor activity was measured by Automex after clonidine (100 micrograms/kg ip) administration. A significant reduction of locomotor activity was found during the 30th-45th-min period of experiment. 3-Methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol (MHPG)-total was decreased significantly at 60 min after clonidine administration in rat cerebral cortex, hippocampus and hypothalamus. This might suggest that MHPG content at 60 min after clonidine administration can be used as functional index of the presynaptic alpha 2-adrenergic receptor. Desipramine (DMI) (20 mg/kg) was injected ip once daily for 14 d and experiments undertaken 60 min after the clonidine administration. Chronic DMI treatment had an effect on rat brain steady state levels of serotonin (5-HT) system. Chronic DMI administration was shown to attenuate the effect of clonidine that reduced MHPG levels on rat brain. The results suggest that the chronic DMI treatment may diminish the clonidine-induced reduction of MHPG via the subsensitivity of presynaptic alpha 2-adrenergic receptor.
