Laser vaporization of Peyronie's plaques.

A series of four cases of surgical excision or vaporization of Peyronie's plaques using the Neodynium/Yag laser is presented. This technique would appear to decrease the need for grafting procedures with minimal blood loss. It results in straight erections without shortening the penis.

Therapeutic use of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). A review of recent experience.

Recombinant cytokines are now available for clinical use. Several colony-stimulating factors (CFS) have been identified which induce activation, proliferation and maturation of myeloid lineage cells. Recent therapeutic trials with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factors (GM-CSF) in association with chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation and leukemia treatment are reviewed. GM-CSF as primary treatment for myelodysplasia and other types of bone marrow failure is also of interest. Colony-stimulating factor therapy in AIDS may be useful in order to reduce myelodepression caused by antiviral treatment and chemotherapy for associated malignancies like Kaposi's sarcoma. However, the effect of neutrophil count increase on infection is far from clear, and the real benefit of GM-CSF in cancer therapy has yet to be demonstrated.

Use of the Technicon H-1 in the characterization of leukemias.

The Technicon H-1 is a hematology analyzer that performs a complete blood cell count and white blood cell differential using both cytochemistry and flow technology. Two white blood cell cytograms are produced based on peroxidase activity and nuclear characteristics of the cells. Ninety cases of leukemia were studied. The 25 cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) could be distinguished from the 39 cases of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia as the lymphocyte percentage was greater than 50% in the ALL cases and the mean peroxidase index value was 0 in 80% of the cases. The ALL cases and the chronic lymphocytic leukemia cases also had different cytogram patterns. Subtypes of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia could not be absolutely distinguished, although promyelocytic leukemias (M3) had characteristic cytograms and a monocyte percentage above 15% suggested a monocytic component (M4 or M5). Chronic myelogenous leukemia likewise seemed to have a recognizable pattern. Since a sample takes only 60 s to process, information is readily available. The unique data available from this instrument should provide a significant advancement in the automated hematology field.

Behavior of attenuated mycobacteria in organs of neonatal and adult mice.

The consequences of Calmette-Guérin bacillus (BCG) vaccination were followed in newborn and adult mice. BCG failed to multiply in the organs of adult mice when administered peritoneally. In contrast, extensive multiplication of the vaccine occurred in both splenic and pulmonary tissue after its peritoneal administration to newborn mice. This absence of tuberculostasis occurred during the period when the animal's spleen, lung, and thymus were rapidly growing. Animals achieved similar levels of resistance to virulent respiratory challenge 10 wk after vaccination irrespective of whether the vaccine had been administered when the mice were newly born and BCG had multiplied in vivo or administered when the animals were fully grown and the BCG had remained in the dormant state. Although neonatal infection with BCG was severe, as shown by the large numbers of organisms recovered from the animals' tissues, the animals suffered no mortality or overt signs of disease. Neonatal vaccination did not significantly affect either the animal's growth rate or the gross development of its organs.
