A case of neurapraxia of the infraorbital nerve occurring as a result of maxillary sinus barotrauma in a diver is presented. Existing reports of a similar nature are reviewed and the pathogenesis of cranial nerve involvement in barotrauma is discussed. Guidelines for treatment are suggested.
Following the introduction of self-recording audiometers into regular use in non-hospital Royal Naval medical facilities, there has been an increase in the rate of detection of hearing losses and consequent referral for formal audiometry and ENT evaluation at Naval Hospitals. Forty-two sets of audiograms have been examined and the hearing thresholds obtained by the two methods compared. The value of self-recording audiometry even in the often imperfect audiometric conditions available in a Naval sick bay has been confirmed and the midpoint of the tracing established as a reliable indicator of the hearing threshold.

A clinical study of computed tomography (CT) was undertaken in 35 patients with tumours involving the larynx. Twenty-seven had primary laryngeal neoplasms, five had tumours arising in adjacent structures but invading the larynx and three who had undergone total laryngectomy were investigated for possible recurrence. The findings were compared with conventional radiological methods and clinical assessment. Confirmation was obtained from laryngectomy specimens in four patients and at autopsy in one. CT provided additional preoperative information on 14 occasions. This included better delineation of submucosal tumour extent, invasion of the pre-epiglottic space and cartilage displacement in invasion.

A case of a "clicking", painful act of deglutition is presented. Overriding of the hyoid bone and the thyroid lamina is thought to have been the mechanism. A partial thyroid laminectomy performed sub-mucoperichondrially effected an immediate and, at present, lasting cure. No similar case could be found in the literature after extensive searches.
