Clinical comparison of corneal diameter and curvature in Asian eyes with those of Caucasian eyes.

Anatomical comparisons of the horizontal visible iris diameter (HVID) and the average keratometry (Kav) measurements were made between Asians and Caucasians and also between males and females. It was found that the HVID was significantly different as a function of both culture and gender. Also found was a significant difference in the Kav between males and females but not between Asians and Caucasians.

A bitoric gas permeable hard contact lens with spherical power effect.

A 36 lens fitting set of gas permeable hard (Polycon II) bitoric contact lenses with spherical power effect in vivo was used to fit 50 patients. Thirty six patients (66 eyes) were correctly fitted with spherical power effect (SPE) lenses while 14 patients (27 eyes) required cylinder power effect (CPE) lenses. The mean flat base curve was 0.45 D.K. flatter than the mean flat corneal K reading, and the mean base curve toricity was 0.50 D.K. less than mean corneal toricity. Overall patient response was good to excellent for 82% of the patient sample.

Clinical management of hydrogel-induced edema.

Clinical techniques and guidelines are discussed to manage manifestations of edema induced by hydrogels. Emphasis is on the pathogenesis of folds in Descemet's membrane (striate keratopathy) accompanying vertical striae that have been found to occur horizontally as well as vertically.
