The effect of monovalent cations on the self-association of cytidylyl-(3-5')-guanosine and guanylyl-(3'5')-cytidine in aqueous solution.

The hydrogen-bonding, base stacking, and formation of extended aggregates has been investigated for salts of guanylyl-3'-5')-cytidine, GpC, and cytidylyl-(3'-5')- guanosine, CpG, in which the cation was Na+, K+, or tetramethylammonium (TMA+). Variable temperature studies were done at 2-70 degrees C on aqueous solutions at pD4 and 8 using 1H NMR and FTIR. At low temperatures it has been found that at pD 8 both GpC and CpG form Watson-Crick dimers which stack upon each other to form larger species. A slight cation effect is observed below 35 degrees C which has the order: TMA+ > Na+ > K+. This order suggests that the cations are interacting with the phosphate and interactions with the bases are unlikely. The 1H NMR spectrum for TMACpG at pD 4 has been assigned and exhibits chemical shift differences from those at pD 8 which are consistent with protonation of the N3 of the cytidine residue. Based on NMR line broadening, CpG at pD 4 has a greater degree of self-association at low temperature than it or GpC have at pD 8. A different type of hydrogen bonding and self-association occur in CpG at pD 4 compared to pD 8, but the structures are uncertain. Due to hemi-protonation of the cytidine N3, parallel G-G/C-C+ base paired dimers or G-tetrads may be forming.

Conformation, hydrogen bonding and aggregate formation of guanosine 5'-monophosphate and guanosine in dimethylsulfoxide.

The tetrabutylammonium salt of guanosine 5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) dissolves in DMSO-d6 forming aggregated species which exhibit some properties of reverse micelles. 1H NOESY experiments show that the 5'-GMP adopts the syn conformation about the glycosidic bond. Molecular mechanics calculations reveal a stable structure with this conformation in which the phosphate group and the amino group of the base are in close enough proximity to hydrogen bond. In contrast inosine 5'-monophosphate in DMSO-d6, which has no NH2 group for hydrogen bond stabilization of the syn conformation, is shown by NMR to have the anti structure. Guanosine in DMSO-d6 behaves differently from 5'-GMP. Guanosine adopts the anti conformation and forms a symmetric dimer via hydrogen bonding between the N3 and NH2 of the bases.

Programmatic intent of IAIMS--past and future. The National Library of Medicine's IAIMS grant program: experiences and futures.

The National Library of Medicine awards grants for the planning and development of integrated Academic Information Management Systems (IAIMS). The goal is to create mechanisms in health institutions and organizations to more effectively manage the knowledge of medicine. A background and description of the IAIMS Grant Program is given with emphasis on the planning phase. General observations and comments are made about IAIMS activities to date. A brief discussion about IAIMS futures is also included.

Communicating the results of NLM grant-supported library projects.

National Library of Medicine research, resource project, and resource improvement grant-related communication activity was measured and examined as an initial task in exploring information exchanges in health sciences librarianship. Grantees were generally found to be reporting results extensively in a variety of written formats and oral presentations. Ways to improve the transfer and utilization of research and development activity results are presented.

Area health education centers and health science library services.

A study to determine the impact that the Area Health Education Center type of programs may have on health science libraries was conducted by the Extramural Programs, National Library of Medicine, in conjunction with a contract awarded by the Bureau of Health Manpower, Health Resources Administration, to develop an inventory of the AHEC type of projects in the United States. Specific study tasks included a review of these programs as they relate to library and information activities, on-site surveys on the programs to define their needs for library services and information, and a categorization of library activities. A major finding was that health science libraries and information services are generally not included in AHEC program planning and development, although information and information exchange is a fundamental part of the AHEC type of programs. This study suggests that library inadequacies are basically the result of this planning failure and of a lack of financial resources; however, many other factors may be contributory. The design and value of library activities for these programs needs explication.

NLM Medical Library Resource Improvement Grant Program: an evaluation.

The Extramural Programs, NLM, undertook a staff study to evaluate the Medical Library Resource Improvement Grant Program in order to determine impact on hospital library development and to assess factors significant to regional medical library (RML) network development. Initiated in fiscal year 1971, the improvement grant program provides one-year, one-time grant awards of a maximum of $3,000 to assist in establishing a basic collection of books, journals, and other health science information resources for community hospitals and comparable health facilities. Applicants who received grant awards were compared to applicants who did not receive awards and to nonapplicants, using nine dependent variables, four independent variables, and responses to an RML questionnaire. Results show that the applicants who received awards outperformed the other groups, and that the improvement grant program has been successful in stimulating library development. As a result of this study, the improvement grant program will be modified to support consortium arrangements as well as individual institutions, and to extend the period of grant support to two years. Future grant support will be a maximum of $4,000 in the first year, and up to $3,000 with a provision of $1,000 in matching funds from the grantee in the second year.

IAIMS: an interview with Dick West. Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems. Interview by Joan S Ash and Frances E Johnson.

Richard T. West, IAIMS (Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems) Program Officer at the National Library of Medicine for 13 years, reflects on the origin, development, effectiveness, and future of IAIMS efforts. He dwells on the changes that have taken place as the concept of IAIMS has evolved from a technology-based to an organization-based level of integration. The role of IAIMS in patient care, education, and research is discussed, along with the role of the librarian in the implementation of IAIMS programs. He sees a need for training for librarians, informaticians, and others in preparation for these efforts and for the development of academic reward systems that encourage them. He expresses a desire for those working in information technology in hospitals to gain a clearer understanding of IAIMS, because the concept fits hospitals as well as academic health science centers. He exhorts informaticians to bring to reality the futuristic fantasies of a new information world.
