Preparations of formaldehyde in various organic liquids-ethylene glycol, glycerol, and propylene glycol-serve as effective disinfectants towards microbial vegetative cells and spores. This disinfection is a temperature-dependent process and is manifest when these formaldehyde base disinfectants are dissolved in water. The irritating vapors associated with formaldehyde disinfection are not present in either of these new formaldehyde base disinfectants or in aqueous solutions of them.
Viral inactivation by heat and/or ionizing radiation is analyzed in terms of a kinetic model. The phenomenon of synergistic viral inactivation observed when viruses are exposed to the simultaneous application of heat and ionizing radiation is interpreted within the framework provided by this three-term model. Data on the inactivation of T4 bacteriophage by heat and/or ionizing radiation is presented, and the kinetic model is used to provide a description of observed dose rate and temperature dependences. Extension of the model to other viral systems inactivated by heat and ionizing radiation is considered, and the general applicability of these analyses suggests that the kinetic model may well serve as an extension of target theory in describing the radiobiological effects of ionizing radiation.
Aqueous formaldehyde is shown to exert both sporostatic and sporocidal effects on Bacillus subtilis spores. The sporostatic effect is a result of the reversible inhibition of spore germination occasioned by aqueous formaldehyde; the sporocidal effect is due to temperature-dependent inactivation of these spores in aqueous formaldehyde. The physicochemical state of formaldehyde in solution provides a framework with which to interpret both the sporostatic and sporocidal properties of aqueous formaldehyde.

Low levels of alcohols have been found to inhibit the process of spore germination. The extent of germination is dependent upon the concentration of alcohol present in the germinating medium. This inhibition is reversible since removal of the alcohol from the spore environment allows germination to proceed.

A case report of late spontaneous extrusion of a 250-cm(3), round, texturized silicone gel mammary implant, 14 months after implantation, is presented. The irregular surface of the implant, the location of the implant pocket, and the absence of the fibrous capsule were responsible for alterations in the skin thickness. In addition, the pressure exerted by the implant against the skin provides for stasis with venous thrombosis at the inferior portion of the breast. The continuous manipulation of the breast over a thin skin with vascular alterations led to the skin perforation with implant extrusion.
Ivermectin is the only one of the avermectins that has been widely used in humans, since it is recommended as the treatment of choice for onchocerciasis, a filariasis that produces "river blindness," a parasitic endemic infestation in countries of West Equatorial Africa and in some areas of Central and South America. Also, ivermectin has been used for treating human endo- and ectoparasites with effective results and with almost no side effects. To study the efficacy of ivermectin for scabies, which is very common in Colombia, a trial with this drug that could be easily administered, with fast application and high efficacy, was undertaken. For this purpose, six complete families with active scabies, consisting of 12 adults and 20 children ranging in age from 1 to 10 years, were treated with 1% ivermectin in a solution of propylene glycol applied topically to the affected skin. The dose employed was 400 microg/kg, repeated once the following week. All patients were cured, tolerated the medication well, and there were no side effects or signs of recurrence 2, 4, or 6 weeks after therapy. In addition to its efficacy, easy administration, and lack of side effects, ivermectin is a low-cost medication.
Esophageal cysts are a rare clinicopathological condition. They usually cause respiratory symptoms in children, while they are often asymptomatic in adults. Two cases of esophageal cysts in adults, recently diagnosed and treated in our department, are reported. In the 1st case (a 52 year-old woman) dysphagia was the main symptom. In the 2nd one (a 39 year-old woman) the patient was asymptomatic. Both were surgically excised by enucleation, with no post-operative complications. The histological study showed both cysts to be lined with ciliated cylindrical epithelium, and they were therefore considered to be congenital. Smooth muscle was only seen in the cyst wall in the 2nd case, but it was not organized in 2 layers, as is typical of duplication cysts. Cartilage or respiratory glands, the pathognomonic features of bronchogenic cysts, were not identified in either of them. Therefore, the diagnosis was inclusion cysts in both cases.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: To assess if the study on the involvement of perigastric lymph nodes, the only ones resected in D1 lymphadenectomy, is a valid prognostic marker in patients undergoing curative resection for gastric cancer. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study was performed in 101 patients with gastric cancer, 34 women and 67 men, with a mean age of 61 years, undergoing curative resection by gastrectomy and D1 lymphadenectomy. Tumor size, the depth of tumoral invasion of the wall, nodal involvement and 5-year survival were assessed. RESULTS: Both tumor size and the depth of tumoral invasion of the wall were significantly related to metastatic involvement of perigastric lymph nodes. Similarly, tumoral involvement of the first-level lymph nodes was significantly associated with survival. CONCLUSIONS: D1 lymphadenectomy can provide adequate prognostic information in patients with gastric cancer undergoing curative resection.
