Effects of Skeletonema costatum extracts on the central nervous system.

We report the effects of aqueous extracts of the microalga Skeletonema costatum Greve (Cleve) (Bacillariophyceae) on spontaneous motor activity, rectal temperature, motor coordination, amphetamine-induced hypermotility, exploratory behaviour, muscle relaxation, catalepsy, conditioned avoidance responses, oxotremorin-induced cholinergic syndrome, and pentylenetetrazole-induced convulsions. The S. costatum extract at dosages of 310 and 620 mg/kg works like an antidopaminergic drug with anticholinergic properties, that does not induce catalepsy and with a notable muscle relaxing activity.

Effects of Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Dunaliella tertiolecta extracts on the central nervous system.

Continuing work on the effects of aqueous extracts of the microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin (Bacillariophyceae) and Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher (Chlorophyceae) on the central nervous system, we report their effects on spontaneous motor activity, rectal temperature, exploratory behaviour, muscle relaxation, catalepsy, and conditioned avoidance responses. Both extracts showed activity as a CNS depressant and a potential muscle relaxant, the latter more marked in the case of P. tricornutum.

Arthritis

Bronchial migration of pulmonary arterial coil.

Transcatheter embolization was performed with stainless steel coils in a patient with bilateral pulmonary arterial aneurysms of unknown etiology. After a successful initial procedure, endobronchial migration of one of the coils was found which required surgical treatment. Indications of embolization and different types of materials are discussed.

Hypoglycemic activity of several seaweed extracts.

The hypoglycemic activity of several seaweed extracts on rabbits was studied. Ethanol extracts of Laminaria ochroleuca, Saccorhiza polyschides and Fucus vesiculosus were administered orally to normal animals and their effects on glycemia and triglyceridemia evaluated. Crude polysaccharides and protein solutions from Himanthalia elongata and Codium tomentosum were also assayed. Polysaccharides and proteins from H. elongata caused a significant reduction in blood glucose 8 h after intravenous administration. A case of 5 mg/kg of crude polysaccharide lowered glycemia about 18% in normal rabbits and by about 50% in alloxan-diabetic animals, while the protein solution lowered glycemia in diabetic rabbits by about 30%.
