Supervision and privacy in psychotherapy training.

Supervision is an essential element of training in psychotherapy, and the issue of privacy in relation to the supervisory process is an important one. The authors examine the attitude toward privacy implicit in each of the two major models of supervision, the so-called didactic and countertransference models. They consider the ways in which supervision, particularly the countertransference model, and the use of audiovisual devices intrude on the privacy of the therapist and the therapy. Finally, they consider how the institutional and professional structures within which supervision takes place deal with the issue of privacy.

The regressed inpatient group in a graded group treatment program.

This article describes the progress of severely regressed inpatients as part of a graded group treatment program. Leaders must actively initiate structure, formulate goals, and emphasize the eventual "graduation" of patients to higher-level groups. Essential qualities of the group leaders and countertransference issues are discussed.

Intimate play and marital adaptation.

LITTLE attention has been given to the contribution of spontaneous, idiosyncratically elaborated "intimate play" to marital adjustment. This exploratory paper draws upon research and clinical interviews with married couples, ethological observations and children's play, and psychoanalytic object relations conceptions of adaptive regression. An understanding of intimate play is developed based on intrapsychic structures and interpersonal process, with several dimensions explored and illustrated in depth: its context, ritualizations, growth-potentiating aspects, and the range of adaptations it reflects. Intimate play is seen as having a role in positive bonding, communication, and conflict reduction, and more generally, as tending to stabilize a marital relationship. The clinical implications of the various phenomena associated with intimate play are also considered.
