Materiel managers: survival under managed care.

Managed care by healthcare providers is becoming the method of choice for controlling costs. Insurance companies, employers, employees as well as healthcare providers are all doing what they can to understand and practice economical managed care. With financial systems that reimburse healthcare providers now moving to a capitated approach, providers need to get away from a cost-plus mentality. More than ever materiel managers need to realize that providers are moving from revenue to expense accounting. Under capitation many, if not all, of management philosophy must change to compete in the new healthcare delivery environment.

Pay attention to the "minor" details of computer inventory.

This article discusses some of the problems one hospital encountered in going from an effective manual system of inventory control to a computerized system. Problems occurred because of a lack of attention to minor details. The hospital had difficulty standardizing abbreviations, selecting and assigning proper units of measure, assigning identification (catalog) numbers and selecting concise product descriptions to enter on the computers. Ridding the system of these frustrating, 'insignificant' items took a lot of work and about 18 months of corrective action. Although the system works fairly well now, working hours would have been more productive had more attention been paid to details. Anyone contemplating the move from a manual to a computerized system, or from one system to another, should read this article.

Conducting the storeroom inventory: a step-by-step approach.

At least once each year, it is necessary to perform a physical count of every item in the hospital's official inventory. The author contends that this often dreaded task needn't be difficult and should actually be somewhat pleasant for those involved. To ensure this, he provides a step-by-step instructions for how to prepare for and conduct the actual inventory. If followed, this should yield an accurate and efficient inventory while simplifying an often distasteful task.
