Prevalence of bovine herpesvirus-1, bovine oral diarrhea, parainfluenza-3, bovine adenoviruses-3 and -7, and goat respiratory syncytial viral antibodies in goats.

Sera from healthy goats were collected during October 1979 through October 1980. These sera were tested for bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) virus, bovine adenoviruses (BAV) -3 and -7, and goat respiratory syncytial virus (GRSV) antibodies by microtitration virus-neutralization test. The number of herds with seropositive goats for each virus were: 5/38 (13.2%) for BHV-1; 9/38 (23.7%) for BVDV; 8/38 (21.1%) for PI-3 virus; 1/38 (2.6%) for BAV-3; 15/38 (39.5%) for BAV-7; and 26/34 (76.5%) for GRSV. Seropositive rates for each virus for the individual goats tested were: 6/502 (1.2%) for BHV-1; 9/498 (1.8%) for BVDV; 49/458 (10.75) for PI-3 virus; 1/487 (0.025) for BAV-3; 40/448 (8.9%) for BAV-7; and 166/332 (50.0%) for GRSV.

Isolation of a rotavirus from a newborn dog with diarrhea.

A rotavirus was isolated from a newborn dog that died after having clinical signs of diarrhea. Virus particles with rotaviral morphologic features were observed by transmission electron microscopy in the intestinal homogenate collected at necropsy. Cytopathic effects were observed, and rotaviral antigens were detected by indirect immunofluorescence in MA-104 monolayer cultures (a fetal rhesus macaque kidney cell) inoculated with intestinal homogenate. This rotavirus isolate, designated LSU 79C-36, may be a specific canine rotavirus or a rotavirus from another species.

Isolation of feline herpesvirus 1 from a young kitten.

Five kittens exposed neonatally to older cats exhibiting fever with nasal and ocular discharge became ill and died within 10 days of the onset of illness. One kitten which died at 16 days old was examined post mortem and feline herpesvirus 1 was isolated from the brain, liver, lung and spleen.

Interferon production by bovine tracheal organ cultures infected with bovid herpesvirus 1 strains.

Studies have been made of antiviral inhibitors produced by bovine tracheal organ cultures inoculated with strains of bovid herpesvirus 1. The inhibitors, which had properties of interferon, were assayed by a plaque-reduction method in bovine turbinate cell cultures with vesicular stomatitis virus as challenge virus. Each of the four strains of bovid herpesvirus 1 studied induced interferon in bovine tracheal organ cultures.

Feline respiratory tract disease in Louisiana.

An investigation of feline respiratory tract disease (FRD) was made involving 65 affected cats (group 1) and 65 control cats (group 2) matched for age, sex, and residence. Feline calicivirus strains (FCV), feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), or both, were isolated from 59% of group 1 cats and from 7% of group 2 cats. Isolation of these viruses showed a significantly greater (P < 0.05) relative risk for group 1 cats. Virus isolations were three times more frequent from males than from females older than 1 year (both groups), but were equally distributed between males and females younger than 1 year. Bacteria and fungi had a secondary role in both FCV- and FHV-1 associated FRD. Intestinal infections of Ancylostoma spp, Dipylidium caninum, and Toxocara cati were diagnosed more frequently in group 1 cats than in control (group 2). Paragonimus kellicotti was diagnosed in 3 group 1 cats, Taenia taeniaeformis in 1 group 1 cat, Isospora rivolta in 1 group 1 cat, and Giardia cati in 1 control cat. The present study supports the current concept of a primary viral cause for development of FRD.

Preclinical pharmacology of saralasin.

Saralasin is a highly soluble and stable AII antagonist with a relatively short half-life; therefore, its effects are rapidly reversible when administered i.v. Acute and subacute studies have shown only transient toxicosis with no significant pathology or teratology. Saralasin's angiotensin receptor affinity has been correlated with its biologic acitivity. Observations from the pharmacodynamic investigations have shown that saralasin is a specific competitive antagonist of the vascular, renal, adrenal, cardiac, and central nervous system actions of AII. In addition, these studies further support the utility of saralasin as a diagnostic and therapeutic agent for patients whose hypertension is due directly to AII.

Antiviral activity in interferon-treated bovine tracheal organ cultures.

The effect of bovine interferon on the replication of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus and vesicular stomatitis virus in bovine tracheal organ cultures was studied. After treatment of tracheal organ cultures with interferon, inhibition of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus and vesicular stomatitis virus replication was observed. This tracheal organ system may be useful in determining the in vivo response to interferon for viral infections of the bovine respiratory tract.

In vitro interferon production by bovine tissues: effects of hydrocortisone.

The effect of hydrocortisone on bovine interferon production in vitro was studied. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus was used as an inducer. Interferon was assayed by the plaque-reduction method in bovine fetal kidney cultures, using vesicular stomatitis virus as challenge virus. Hydrocortisone decreased interferon production in bovine fetal spleen and peripheral blood leukocyte cultures. Hydrocortisone did not decrease interferon production by bovine alveolar macrophages, in 1 experiment. Properties of viral inhibitors were those of interferon.

In vitro interferon production by bovine tissues: induction with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus.

The interferon-inducing ability of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus was determined in tissue cultures of bovine origin inoculated with untreated and ultraviolet (UV) irradiated IBR viruses. Interferon was assayed by the plaque-reduction method in bovine fetal kidney (BFK) cell cultures, using vesicular stomatitis virus as challenge virus. Highest interferon concentrations were produced by cultures of bovine fetal (BF) spleen cells and aveolar macrophage cultures derived from adult cattle. Moderate interferon concentrations were produced by peripheral blood leukocyte (PBL) suspension cultures from adult cattle with serum-neutralizing antibodies against IBR virus. Cultures of PBL from 1 cow without detectable serum-neutralizing antibodies against IBR virus did not produce detectable interferon in response to IBR virus. Cultures of PBL from cattle with or without detectable serum-neutralizing antibodies against IBR virus produced interferon when stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Low levles of viral inhibitors were detected infrequently in monolayer cultures of BFK and BF nasal mucosa inoculated with UV-irradiated IBR virus and in BF tracheal organ cultures inoculated with untreated IBR virus. Interferon was not detected in fluids collected from IBR virus-exposed monolayer cultures of primary and secondary BF lung, secondary BF tracheal mucosa, secondary BF liver, secondary BF adrenal, and PBL in the 4th and 7th passages. The antiviral inhibitors from BF spleen, bovine alveolar macrophage, and PBL cultures induced with IBR virus, as well as inhibitors from PBL cultures induced with PHA, had the usual properties of interferon.
