Fine-grained measures of dogs' eating behavior in single-pan and two-pan tests.

The feeding behavior of dogs in one-pan and two-pan tests was measured in the usual way (total food intake in the test) and at a fine-grained level (cumulative amount eaten on a moment-by-moment basis during the test). The four experiments reported studied dogs' reactions to different dry foods, and to semi-moist and canned foods. The fine-grained measures were informative about the dogs' reactions to the foods in several ways that could not be derived from the usual intake measure. The main value of the fine-grained measurements seems to be that they suggest new directions for research on feeding behavior that may improve the understanding of performance in one- and two-pan tests.

Food preferences of dogs housed in testing-kennels and in consumers' homes: some comparisons.

This work assessed the extent to which the food preferences of dogs housed in testing-kennels are representative of those reported for dogs housed in consumers' homes. Experiment 1 compared two-pan preference data from kennel-dogs and home-dogs fed canned, semi-moist, or dry food products. Kennel- and home-dogs performed similarly on the canned-products test, but differed significantly on the semi-moist and dry products tests. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the discrepancies between kennel- and home-dogs were likely due to differences in feeding history prior to the test. Experiment 3 showed that the effects of prefeeding with a single food are relatively short-lived in kennel-dogs, lasting for only a few days. In home-dogs preferences were more stable.

Studies in canine olfaction, taste and feeding: a summing up and some comments on the academic-industrial relationship.

The authors discuss two principal points. First, what appear to be contradictory findings in the feeding studies in this monograph can be resolved by clarifying two terms: palatability and preference. Second, some of the work in the monograph resulted from an academic and industrial relationship. This relationship was judged mutually beneficial and productive. The primary benefits are discussed along with what are considered the key ingredients for a successful joint venture.

PSRO--impact and implications for alcoholism treatment programs.

Since there has been recent congressional concern with claims of Medicare/Medicaid fraud and abuse and a renewed push for a national health insurance program, PSROs seem evermore closely tied to the mandate of quality health care at the lowest possible cost. Now is the time to acknowledge their being, assess their impact on health care delivery programs, and gear our efforts to supporting our common objective of quality medical services.

Vocalizations of White Carneaux pigeons during experiments on schedule-induced aggression.

Two types of vocalizations of White Carneaux pigeons were identified in experiments on schedule-induced aggression and were given pictorial representation in sound spectrograms. Characteristics of these vocalizations are examined in the context of previous descriptions of vocalizations of several varieties of pigeons during aggressive and sexual encounters in naturalistic settings. These earlier descriptions portrayed vocalizations with mnemonic phrases and the symbolds of dictionary pronunciationmdata are presented that indicate that the analysis of social encounters between pigeons during schedule-induced aggression may be aided by employing these and other vocalizations as dependent variables.
