Centric relation registration using an anterior deprogrammer in dentate patients.

A technique is described for registering centric relation in dentate patients using an anterior deprogrammer to prevent muscle splinting. Properly executed, the patient is able to close into centric relation unassisted, eliminating the possibility of operator-induced error associated with commonly accepted manipulative techniques. Verification is possible visually when articulating casts by confirming the precise alignment of the mandibular incisors with occlusal markings on the deprogrammer attached to the maxillary cast.

Shear strength of lingual rest seats prepared in bonded composite.

A study based on the single criterion of resistance to loading forces was conducted to investigate the suitability of lingual composite rest seats for anterior teeth. The minimum acceptable resistance level was chosen from a review of the literature; other basic criteria were described; and the desirability of this technique was discussed.

Load cycling of lingual rest seats prepared in bonded composite.

A study to investigate the suitability of lingual composite rest seats for anterior teeth was based on the single criterion of repetitive load cycling. A 3-year minimum survival was chosen, with load and cycling values based on a review of the literature. An attempt was made to simulate the effect of saliva on composite.

Titanium: the mystery metal of implant dentistry. Dental materials aspects.

A number of important points concerning titanium and its alloys have been discussed. They are summarized as follows. Ti and its alloys, particularly the alpha-beta alloys, possess mechanical properties that make them ideal implant materials. Ti and its alloys oxidize readily in air. This surface oxide is extremely stable in the physiologic environment of the body. The stability and inertness of this surface oxide layer acts to protect Ti from corrosive breakdown when used in the body. The elimination of surface irregularities and contaminants is important when preparing a metal for implantation. Titanium can be coupled with equally passive metals in the body without causing galvanic corrosion.
