Effect of instructions on the disappearance of steadily fixated luminous figures.

A controversy has existed in the literature between peripheral and central processes as explanations for the disappearances found in steadily fixated luminous figures. The present experiment (N = 24 male and female undergraduates) was designed to test the extent to which the instructions or experimenter bias influence the disappearances of three different luminous figures. The results indicated that the type of instruction did affect the frequency of disappearances, but not the kind of disappearances. A significant difference was also found in the frequency of disappearances among the different figures. These results support the central process hypothesis.

Frequency dependence of acoustic parameters of freshly excised tissues of Sprague Dawley rats.

A modified version of the pulse echo technique was used to measure the velocity of propagation and attenuation of ultrasound in excised tissue of young-adult Sprague-Dawley rats. The measurements were made at ultrasonic frequencies of 1.0, 2.25, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 MHz. The temperature of the tissues was monitored continuously to within +/- 0.1 degrees C of the ambient temperature. The acoustic parameters were measured in the liver, kidney, cardiac muscle and gastrocnemius muscle. All measurements were carried out in the near field region of the ultrasonic beam. It was observed that the velocity of propagation in tissues showed a slight dispersion with frequency. The attenuation in tissues increased with increasing frequency.

Generalized gangliosidosis type II (juvenile GM1 gangliosidosis). A pathological, histochemical and ultrastructural study.

Pathological, histochemical and ultrastructural studies on 3 siblings with GM1 gangliosidosis type II are reported. These studies support a biochemical defect with profound deficiency of beta-galactosidases which results in widespread accumulation of the GM1 ganglioside and its asialo derivative in brain and to a lesser extent in viscera, as well as in storage of a keratan sulphate-like mucopolysaccharide. Striking valvular changes in the heart without myocardial involvement were seen in all cases. The histochemical and ultrastructural changes are similar to those seen in GM1 gangliosidosis type I, though less severe. Autosomal recessive inheritance without apparent ethnic predilection seems likely.

[Inadequate corpus luteum function in benign breast-diseases (author's transl)].

The amount of progesterone and estradiol secreted by human corpus luteum depends upon an adequate release of FSH and LH by pituitary gland during follicular phase and ovulation. In this paper, plasma determination of progesterone and estradiol were carried out in 109 women with benign breast disease during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle. Results obtained were compared with those observed in 25 normal women studied in the same conditions. In women with benign breast disease, the curve of daily progesterone concentrations during luteal phase was lower than that of normal women. The progesterone peak at 5th day of luteal phase was only 8,1 +/- 3.8 ng/ml instead of 17.2 +/- 3.5 ng/ml in normal women. No significative difference was observed concerning plasma estradiol between patients and normal women. These results indicate that women with benign breast disease have an inadequate corpus luteum function which may be the result of disorder of ovulation. Pathophysiological implications resulting from this observation are discussed.
