Using a highly specific and sensitive radioimmunoassay for dynorphin(1-8) (D 1-8), and a singly blind test design, we measured D(1-8) immunoreactivity (ir D 1-8) in CSF of 35 first break cases of acute schizophrenic patients. All patients were free of psychotropic medication for at least one week before the study. Another 31 neurological patients suffered from cervical arthrosis, tumor, myelopathy etc. were studied as controls. The ir D(1-8) in CSF of schizophrenic patients were significantly lower than that of controls (91.8 +/- 5.6, means +/- S.E.M., and 131.9 +/- 6.8 fmol/ml CSF respectively, p less than 0.001).
Examiner diagnostic accuracy and response times were compared using subtraction and conventional radiography in a dog model. Osseous lesions were induced interproximally and through the mandibular buccal bone interradicularly and radicularly. Standardized preoperative and postoperative conventional radiographs of the induced lesions were compared to subtraction images of the same sites by 11 dentists. Examiners using the subtraction technique demonstrated improved diagnostic performance (P less than 0.001) and response times (P less than 0.001). Additionally, this method yielded a 30% reduction in equivocal diagnostic decisions. Data from this study suggest that subtraction radiography is a sensitive and accurate method to detect osseous lesions associated with periodontal diseases.

This paper describes the epidemiology and control of human lymphatic filariasis in Hubei province, China from the 1950s to the 1990s. Brugia malayi, transmitted by Anopheles sinensis, and Wuchereria bancrofti, transmitted by Culex quinquefasciatus, were found in 69 of 78 counties and cities. The distribution of filaria species was distinct, with B. malayi endemic in the plains, mixed infections in hilly areas, and W. bancrofti in the mountains. Before 1979, the microfilaria rate (mfr) in some villages was as high as 30.69%. Since 1979, large scale control programmes have been carried out and 27,875,267 blood examinations have been made. Up to 1988, the mfr in all endemic villages decreased to below 1%. From 1989 to 1991 about 200,000 people had their blood examined yearly and few cases were detected. The continued use of mass blood examination for filariasis surveillance is not economic at such low levels of infection, and it is suggested that selective treatment of microfilaremic persons should be the main control measure at this stage.

A diffuse electrodecremental ictal pattern (DEP) has been associated with tonic seizures and, less often, with other forms of epilepsy and has been considered to reflect a generalized seizure disorder of diffuse cortical or subcortical (brainstem) origin. In some seizures associated with DEP, however, focal ictal manifestations have been observed. We reviewed the records of all patients admitted to our seizure monitoring unit for 3 years and detected 39 patients with seizures associated with DEP. In 23 of 39 patients, clinical ictal behaviors resembled seizures of unilateral supero/mesiofrontal lobe origin and interictal EEG showed a prominent unilateral frontal component. Nine of 39 had complex absences (CA)/complex partial seizures (CPS); 4 of them were of unilateral frontal lobe origin. Seven of 39 patients had tonic or atonic seizures. Seven patients were studied further with subdural electrodes. Ictal onsets showed a high-frequency frontal lobe discharge. We conclude that in a subgroup of patients a generalized electrodecremental pattern on scalp EEG results from a regional cortical high-frequency ictal discharge originating in a single frontal lobe.
We sought to create a regeneration template for the meniscal cartilage of the knee to induce complete meniscal regeneration, and to develop the technique for implanting the prosthetic appliance in vivo. We designed a resorbable collagen-based scaffold and conducted in vitro and in vivo studies. In vivo, the scaffold was implanted in the knees of immature swine and mature canines and evaluated clinically, histologically, and biochemically. Because the canine stifle joint meniscus is more clinically relevant to the human meniscus, this paper emphasizes those results. We studied 24 mixed breed dogs (14 males and 10 females) with an average weight of 25.5 kg (range, 20 to 35) that were obtained from a USDA-licensed supplier. The dogs were deemed clinically and radiographically skeletally mature. None of the dogs had a preexisting knee joint abnormality. All dogs underwent an 80% subtotal resection of the medial meniscus bilaterally. A collagen template was implanted in one stifle (N = 24). The contralateral side served as a control: 12 dogs had a total resection alone and the other 12 dogs had an immediate replantation of the autologous meniscus. Results were tabulated at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. At final evaluation, before the animals were euthanized, the results were submitted for statistical analysis as well as histologic and biochemical analyses. The results demonstrated that a copolymeric collagen-based scaffold can be constructed that is compatible with meniscal fibrochondrocyte growth in vitro and in vivo, that does not inhibit meniscal regeneration in an immature pig, and that may induce regeneration of the meniscus in the mature dog.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
