Colchicine treatment of urticarial vasculitis.

A patient with clinically and histologically typical urticarial vasculitis has been treated with 0.5 mg of colchicine three times per day. This treatment resulted in both disappearance of urticarial skin lesions and amelioration of severe systemic symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever and arthralgia. Colchicine is proposed as an effective therapeutic agent for urticarial vasculitis if other drugs are ineffective, poorly tolerated or contraindicated.

[Genital mycoplasma infections].

Clinical and experimental investigations on the significance of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum have revealed different and contradictory results. Both germs are frequently discovered in young, sexually active persons. Ureaplasma urealyticum might be the cause of some cases of non-gonococcal urethritis. M. hominis seems to be one causative agent of endometritis, salpingitis, parametritis and septicaemia after birth; we do not know yet, however, how often this may be the case. M. hominis may also infect the newborn, e.g., it may cause meningitis and encephalitis. The diagnosis of an infection with mycoplasmas is mainly based on the isolation of the organism, the lack of other pathogens in the lesions, and the demonstration of a significant change of titer of homologous antibodies. Tetracycline is the drug of choice; alternatives are clindamycin for M. hominis and erythromycin for U. urealyticum.

[Akrokeratoderma hereditarium punctatum].

Akrokeratoderma hereditarium punctatum is characterized by multiple, skin coloured papules on the dorsum of the hands, which develop as verrucous lesions after puberty and spread slowly in the following years. There is no subjective discomfort. Focal hyperkeratosis and hypergranulosis are histological markers; the elastic fibers appear normal. The differential diagnosis of similar keratosis of the palms and soles is discussed.
