Bilateral endogenous Staphylococcus aureus endophthalmitis: a case report.

In this article the authors present a case of bilateral endophthalmitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The characteristics, the treatment and the prognosis of endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis are discussed. The patient was diabetic and treated for a septicaemia caused by Staphylococcus aureus. After a few days we diagnosed a bilateral endophthalmitis. Despite treatment with antibiotics and a bilateral vitrectomy, the final visual outcome was limited.

Subretinal hemorrhage removal.

Subretinal hemorrhages can be caused by different pathologies. In our opinion the subretinal neovascularizations associated with age related macular degeneration are the most frequent cause of these subretinal hemorrhages. The surgical indications of this pathology are presented and illustrated by 10 cases we operated on over the last two years. The surgical technique and the prognosis of the treatment are discussed.

Retinal detachment surgery following implantation of a keratoprosthesis. A case report.

Retinal detachment is an eye with a keratoprosthesis usually has an extreme poor prognosis. We describe the successful repair of a total retinal detachment following implantation of a new type Worst-keratoprosthesis in the only eye of a 70-year-old patient. A vitrectomy, epiretinal peeling, 180 degrees superior retinotomy, subretinal membrane peeling and an injection of perfluorooctane were performed to flatten the retina. After the endophotocoagulation a perfluorooctane-silicone oil exchange was performed. An additional intervention was necessary to treat a redetachment. After 3 months follow-up the retina has remained attached and the patient regained ambulatory vision.

Treatment of posterior eye segment complications after perforating trauma.

168 perforating trauma cases that underwent vitreoretinal surgery in our hospital over a two year period were reviewed. A uniform surgical concept was applied in those severely injured eyes. Showing posterior eye segment complications that required vitreoretinal surgery and having at least light perception were the only two criteria to be eligible for this study. The anatomic and functional results in different trauma groups are discussed as well as indications and duration of silicone oil tamponade.

Retinopathy of prematurity. Review of 7 cases.

A retrospective review of children with ROP, stage 2 or more, diagnosed between 24 April 1985 and 31 December 1990, is presented. The 7 patients had been born prematurely. The gestational age at birth ranged from 24 to 31 weeks. Their birth weight was less than 1430 g. Spontaneous evolution and evolution following cryotherapy are described. The follow-up period ranged from 2.5 to 30 months.

The use of perfluorocarbon liquids in vitreous surgery.

Perfluoro-octane is used as an intraoperative tool for manipulation of the retina during vitreous surgery for retinal detachment in cases of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), giant tears and large peripheral retinotomies. One case of a macular hole combined with a peripheral one was also treated in this way. Perfluoro-octane seems, in our experience, a useful instrument for intraoperative atraumatic flattening of the retinal in those complicated cases with largely detached retinas.

Back-flush bipolar diathermy needle.

We have developed a back-flush needle with a built-in capability for endodiathermy. This new instrument can both aspirate blood and coagulate the bleeding vessel.

Retinal detachment and pseudophakos.

With the increasing number of intraocular lensimplants the retina surgeon is more often confronted with retinal detachment after lensimplantation. The treatment of pseudophakic retinal detachment is mostly a problem of examination. The Panfunduskop of Schlegel is a vary valuable aid and permits detection of most breaks situated anterior or on the equator. The article presents the results of 37 operated eyes.
