Adsorption studies on Parthenium hysterophorous weed: removal and recovery of Cd(II) from wastewater.

The efficiency of parthenium weed as an adsorbent for removing Cd(II) from water has been studied. Parthenium is found to exhibit substantial adsorption capacity over a wide range of initial Cd(II) ions concentration. Effect of time, temperature, pH and concentration on the adsorption of Cd(II) was investigated by batch process. Pseudo-first-order and Pseudo-second-order models were evaluated. The kinetics data for the adsorption process obeyed second-order rate equation. The equilibrium data could be described well by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters such as DeltaH degrees , DeltaS degrees and DeltaG degrees were calculated. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous. The maximum adsorption of Cd(II) ions (99.7%) in the pH range 3-4 indicated that material could be effectively utilized for the removal of Cd(II) ions from wastewater. The desorption studies showed 82% recovery of Cd(II) when 0.1 M HCl solution was used as effluent.

Modeling of phased array transducers.

Phased array transducers are multi-element transducers, where different elements are activated with different time delays. The advantage of these transducers is that no mechanical movement of the transducer is needed to scan an object. Focusing and beam steering is obtained simply by adjusting the time delay. In this paper the DPSM (distributed point source method) is used to model the ultrasonic field generated by a phased array transducer and to study the interaction effect when two phased array transducers are placed in a homogeneous fluid. Earlier investigations modeled the acoustic field for conventional transducers where all transducer points are excited simultaneously. In this research, combining the concepts of delayed firing and the DPSM, the phased array transducers are modeled semi-analytically. In addition to the single transducer modeling the ultrasonic fields from two phased array transducers placed face to face in a fluid medium is also modeled to study the interaction effect. The importance of considering the interaction effect in multiple transducer modeling is discussed, pointing out that neighboring transducers not only act as ultrasonic wave generators but also as scatterers.

Adsorption studies on rice husk: removal and recovery of Cd(II) from wastewater.

Adsorption behaviour of Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Cr(VI) on untreated and phosphate-treated rice husk (PRH) showed that adsorption of Ni(II) and Cd(II) was greater when PRH was used as an adsorbent. Sorption of Cd(II) was dependent on contact time, concentration, temperature, adsorbent doses and pH of the solution. The Langmuir constants and thermodynamic parameters have been calculated at different temperatures. It was found that recovery of Cd(II) from synthetic wastewater by column operation was better than a batch process.
