Prevalence of Cryptosporidium parvum infection in Punjab (India) and its association with diarrhea in neonatal dairy calves.

A prevalence study was contemplated to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in dairy farms in Punjab, India. The cryptosporidium oocysts were detected from 50 and 25.68% from 80 diarrheic and 74 non-diarrheic animals, respectively. Both shedding and intensity of shedding were significant in calves with diarrhea. The Cryptosporidium spp. appears to be common in dairy calves and an important contributor of calf diarrhea in the Punjab province. The prevalence of the infection peaked in young calves between 0 and 30 days in both the diarrheic and non-diarrheic groups (86.4 and 66.6%, respectively). The percentage distribution of positive samples, with reference to age groups of diarrheic and non-diarrheic animals was negatively correlated with increase in age. High mortality rate and case fatality rate of 35.2 and 44.4% were observed in young calves between 0 and 30 days of age.

Synthesis of trans-1,2-cyclohexyldinitrilo tetramethylene phosphonic acid and its radiolabelling with 99mTc for the detection of skeletal metastases.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The development of bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals for the detection of malignant bone lesions could further improve the diagnostic accuracy of routine bone scanning. This study aimed to provide a convenient synthesis of trans-1,2-cyclohexylenedinitrilo tetramethylene phosphonic acid (CDTMP) and an improved preparation of its (99m)Tc complex. METHODS: CDTMP was prepared from trans-1,2-cyclohexyldinitrilotetraacetic acid by reaction with phosphorus trichloride and it was labelled with (99m)Tc. Toxicity and biodistribution studies were carried out in BALB/c mice, while blood clearance and bone scintigraphy studies were carried out in rabbits. (99m)Tc-CDTMP was evaluated for the detection of malignant bone lesions in 11 patients. Bone scintigraphy (a methylene diphosphonate scan) was performed to detect metastases at diagnosis and follow-up. RESULTS: The radiolabelling efficiency was found to be >97% and the stability in serum indicated that (99m)Tc remained bound to the chelate, CDTMP, for up to 24 h. Blood clearance showed a quick wash-out from the circulation and the biological half-lives (t12) were 55 min (F) and 8 h 48 min (S). The LD50 was 110 mg.kg(-1) as determined by toxicity studies. The drug was excreted mainly through renal route and the accumulation of (99m)Tc-CDTMP in bone was 7.69+/-0.65%ID/g at 1 h. The mean ratio of bone lesion to soft tissue was 6.8+/-0.69 and of bone lesion to normal bone was 5.67+/-0.82. Visual image analysis of (99m)Tc-CDTMP was clinically comparable to the interpretation of imaging studies with (99m)Tc-MDP. CONCLUSION: These preliminary data support increased bone uptake by the tetraphosphonate complex of (99m)Tc. This suggests that CDTMP complexed with therapeutic radionuclides should be evaluated for therapy of skeletal metastases.

Pancake kidney detected on renal scintigraphy.

Pancake kidney is an extremely rare renal anomaly resulting from abnormal renal ascent and subsequent fusion. The authors describe a patient with pancake kidneys detected on a Tc-99m DTPA scan. The case reported depicts the scintigraphic findings in such a patient having a pancake kidney.

Anatomical study on true hermaphroditism in an Indian pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

A pig was confirmed to be a true hermaphrodite on the basis of gross and histomorphological studies of the genital organs. The genitalia was consisted of left ovary, oviduct, two coiled uterine horns, body of uterus along with right testis and an epididymis. Vagina and vulva were absent but male urethra with prostate gland was present. Grossly the size of all the genital organs appeared to be normal. Histomorphologically, testis and epididymis were underdeveloped as there was no clearcut spermatogenia and sertoli cells but Leydig cells were normal. The ovary presents normal histological features with some portion of testicular tissue. Degeneration of uterine epithelium was observed along with normal endometrial glands.

Differentiation of malignant and benign solitary thyroid nodules using 30- and 120-minute tc-99m MIBI scans.

Technetium-99m methoxy isobutylisonitrate (MIBI) has been found to be taken up by various tumors, including thyroid cancer. We prospectively evaluated 77 patients with cold thyroid solitary nodules on Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy to evaluate the diagnostic value of Tc-99m MIBI scintigraphy. The aim of this study was to find out if thyroid nodules can be characterized on the basis of retention of MIBI and whether preoperative evaluation of malignancy is possible using this method. Single injection, dual-phase (30 and 120 minutes) thyroid scintigraphy using Tc-99m MIBI was performed in all these patients. In the following days and weeks, all patients underwent surgery. Using the 120/30-minute thyroid lesion to background radiouptake ratio (RUR), malignant and benign thyroid nodules could be separated with a sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of 84.4%, 95.45%, and 93.33%, respectively. The mean RUR for malignant thyroid lesions was found to be 1.57+/-0.32, whereas for benign lesions, the ratio was significantly lower, 0.32+/-0.19. In conclusion, fine needle aspiration cytology along with the 120/30 minutes Tc-99m MIBI scintigraphy ratio appears to be useful in the preoperative assessment of solitary thyroid nodules.

Benign cervical thymoma masquerading as a malignant thyroid nodule.

A thymoma in the neck region is a rare diagnosis involving a solitary neck nodule that moves with deglutition and is contiguous with the thyroid gland. The authors report an unusual case of a thymoma that accumulated both Tc-99m pertechnetate and Tc-99m MIBI. This is probably the first reported case of a benign neck thymoma concentrating these two radiopharmaceuticals. Thymoma should be added to the gamut of false-positive findings in the neck for thyroidal (with Tc-99m pertechnetate) and malignant (with Tc-99m MIBI) tissue.
