Synthesis and reactivity of iridium complexes with pyridine and piperidine ligands: models for hydrodenitrogenation.

The complexes [Ir(H)2(eta1-N-L)2(PPh3)2]PF6, L = py (1), iQ (2) and pip (3) (py = pyridine, iQ = isoquinoline, pip = piperidine) have been synthesized in high yields by hydrogenation of [Ir(cod)(PPh3)2]PF6 in the presence of the appropriate nitrogen compound. When hydrogen is bubbled through 1,2-dichloroethane solutions of 1 or 2, two new species were formed in each case by C-Cl bond activation of the solvent, Ir(H)2Cl(eta1-N-L)(PPh3)2 (L = py, 4; iQ, 5) and IrH(Cl)2(eta1-N-L)(PPh3)2 (L = py, 6; iQ, 7). Reaction of 3 with py or iQ yielded complexes 1 and 2, respectively, while under a slow stream of carbon monoxide the complex [Ir(H)2(eta1-N-pip)(CO)(PPh3)2]PF6 (8) was produced. Complex 3 also reacts with halide and 4-bromothiophenolate anions leading to the corresponding neutral species Ir(H)2(X)(eta1-N-pip)(PPh3)2, X = Cl (9), I (10) and 4-BrC6H4S (11), or with [MoS4]2- to yield the hetero-bimetallic complex [Ir(H)(PPh3)2(mu-S)2MoS2]- (13). All the new complexes were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. The X-ray structures of , 2 and 8 consist of distorted octahedra with a mutually cis disposition of the two hydrides and mutually trans phosphines. Complexes 1, 2 and 3 and their derivatives are of interest as models for the chemisorption step in hydrodenitrogenation reactions on solid catalysts.

Robust hydrogen-bonded self-assemblies from biimidazole complexes. Synthesis and structural characterization of [M(biimidazole)2(OH2)2]2+ (M = Co2+, Ni2+) complexes and carboxylate modules.

A robust heteromeric hydrogen-bonded synthon [R2(2) (9)-Id] is exploited to drive the modular self-assembly of four coordination complexes [M(H2biim)2(OH2)2]2+ (M = Co2+, Ni2+) and carboxylate counterions. This strategy allowed us to build molecular architectures of 0-, 1-, and 2-dimensions. A hydrogen-bonded 2D-network with cavities has been designed, which maintains its striking integrity after reversible water desorption-resorption processes.

C-C bond-forming reactions of Ir(III)-alkenyls and nitriles or aldehydes: generation of reactive hydride- and alkyl-alkylidene compounds and observation of a reversible 1, 2-H shift in stable hydride-Ir(III) alkylidene complexes.

Nucleophilic attack of the beta-carbon of an Ir(III)-alkenyl functionality onto the alpha-carbon of a coordinated nitrile- or aldehyde occurs intramoleculary to yield initially iridacyclic structures. Nitriles give rise to isolable complexes that contain delocalized five-membered rings (iridapyrroles, e.g. 3'-8') in a reaction catalyzed by H2O (for some of these syntheses, Ir(III)-eta 3-allyl derivatives may be used as the source of the Ir(III)-alkenyl moiety). In contrast, the alkenyl-to-aldehyde C-C coupling gives transient iridacycles that evolve by a fast alkyl-to-alkylidene migration and beta-H elimination. The end products (13* and 14*) contain an elaborated chelating alkoxide-olefin ligand. Addition of [H(OEt2)2][BAr'4] to the iridapyrroles effects stereospecific protonation of the beta-ring carbon. Those iridapyrroles which contain an additional metal-alkyl functionality (e.g. 3a*, alkyl = C2H5) afford highly reactive cationic alkyl-alkylidene intermediates that evolve instantaneously by migratory insertion/beta-H elimination. The end products also contain an elaborated, chelating ligand, although this time with an olefin and imine terminus compared with the previous ligand. Contrary to this result, protonation of the hydride-iridapyrrole complex 8a* in weakly coordinating solvents permits isolation of two unusual cationic cis-hydride-alkylidene compounds 11*, which undergo reversible 1,2-H shifts.

Synthesis and Characterization of Heterodinuclear IrCo, RuCo, IrNi, and RuNi Complexes Containing Pyrazolate and Pyrazolylborate Ligands.

Treatment of the metallo ligands [ML(pz)(2)(Hpz)] (pz = pyrazolate; L = C(5)Me(5), M = Ir (1); L = mesitylene, M = Ru (3)) with [M'Cl{HB(3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz)(3)}] (M' = Co (4), Ni (5)) yields heterodinuclear complexes of formula [LM(&mgr;-pz)(2)(&mgr;-Cl)M'{HB(3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz)(3)}] (L = C(5)Me(5); M = Ir; M' = Co (6), Ni (7). L = mesitylene; M = Ru; M' = Co (8)). The related complex [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(pz)(2)(Hpz)] (2) reacts with equimolar amounts of 4 or 5 to give mixtures of the corresponding bis(&mgr;-pyrazolato) &mgr;-chloro complexes [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(&mgr;-pz)(2)(&mgr;-Cl)M'{HB(3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz)(3)}] (M' = Co (9), Ni (10)) and the triply pyrazolato-bridged complexes [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(&mgr;-pz)(3)M'{HB(3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz)(3)}] (M' = Co (11), Ni (12)). Complex 1 reacts with 5 in the presence of KOH to give the IrNi complex [(eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Ir(&mgr;-pz)(3)Ni{HB(3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz)(3)}] (13) whereas its reaction with 4 and KOH rendered the bis(&mgr;-pyrazolato) &mgr;-hydroxo complex [(eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Ir(&mgr;-pz)(2)(&mgr;-OH)Co{HB(3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz)(3)}] (14). The molecular structure of the heterobridged IrCo complex (6) and those of the homobridged RuNi (12) and IrNi (13) complexes have been determined by X-ray analyses. Compound 6 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n, with a = 10.146(5) Å, b = 18.435(4) Å, c = 22.187(13) Å, beta = 97.28(4) degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 12 is monoclinic, space group P2(1), with a = 10.1169(7) Å, b = 21.692(2) Å, c = 11.419(1) Å, beta = 112.179(7) degrees, and Z = 2. Compound 13 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cc, with a = 13.695(2) Å, b = 27.929(6) Å, c = 13.329(2) Å, beta = 94.11(4) degrees, and Z = 4. All the neutral complexes 6, 12, and 13 consist of linear M.M'.B backbones with two (6) or three (12, 13) pyrazolate ligands bridging the dimetallic M.M' units and three substituted 3-i-Pr-4-Br-pz groups joining M' to the boron atoms. The presence in the proximity of the first-row metal M' of the three space-demanding isopropyl substituents of the pyrazolate groups induces a significant trigonal distortion of the octahedral symmetry, yielding clearly different M'-N bond distances on both sides of the ideal octahedral coordination sphere of these metals.
