Implementation of a national metrology network of radionuclides used in nuclear medicine.

The Nuclear Medicine Services (NMS) in Brazil routinely use dose calibrators to measure the activity of solutions containing radiopharmaceuticals. These solutions are administered to patients with the intention to diagnose or treat illnesses. However, for optimal results, the activity of these radiopharmaceuticals must be determined as accurately as possible. The National Laboratory for Ionizing Radiation Metrology (LNMRI) led, since 1998, a comparison program for activity measurements of radiopharmaceuticals administered to patients in the NMS with the purpose promoting quality control. This program has been carried out successfully in Rio de Janeiro, but there is a need to implement it around the country. This can be resolved through the implementation of a network of regional laboratories at various locations throughout the national territory. Currently, such a network is active at a second site, located in Brasília, covering the needs of the Center-West Region, and at a third site, located in Porto Alegre, in the South Region. This work presents the results of comparisons for the radiopharmaceuticals nuclides 131I and 99Tcm and proves that the implementation of a radionuclide metrology network is feasible and viable.

EPR study of radiation stability of organic plastic scintillator for cardiovascular brachytherapy Sr90-Y90 beta dosimetry.

Nowadays, more than one million percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties are being performed annually throughout the world. Restenosis is a significant problem associated with these angioplasty procedures. Radiation treatment with catheter-based beta-emitter sources is currently under clinical trial to prevent this problem. Due to fast and worldwide introduction of beta-sources for intravascular application, there is a growing interest in the dosimetry aspects. However, accurate dosimetry of beta-radiation is more difficult than that of gamma-radiation. Suitable detectors are not yet available with accuracy down to a tenth of a millimeter. Conventional measuring systems are not capable of such spatial resolution, except radiochromic film. However, film dosimeters have limited sensitivity and their radiation characteristics are different than those of tissue; therefore dose measurements require corrections. An alternative is to use water-equivalent plastic scintillators. In this work, organic plastic scintillator (BCF-10) dosimetry is studied using the Monte Carlo (MC) technique PENELOPE, and its radiation stability, after irradiation, is experimentally studied through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Depth dose and dose profile are measured and compared to film dosimetry results. The EPR technique shows that the recovery time is dose independent in this kind of fiber and shows good stability.

Characterization of iron, copper and zinc levels in the colostrum of mothers of term and pre-term infants before and after pasteurization.

Pasteurization is a thermal treatment applied to the milk used in human milk banks so as to provoke the thermic inactivation of pathogenic micro-organisms, with the aim of avoiding contamination of milk that will be offered to new-born infants in clinical conditions very often demanding special care. The literature has very little data available relating to the effect of pasteurization on the concentration of oligo-elements in human milk. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pasteurization on the concentrations of iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the colostrum of mothers of pre-term (PT) and term (T) infants. Samples were collected from the day of birth to the seventh day after birth. The oligo-elements were analyzed using the total reflection X-ray fluorescence technique with synchrotron radiation. The following results of Fe, Cu and Zn (means +/- SD) were obtained for the PT and T colostrum samples, non-pasteurized and pasteurized, respectively: PT: 1.96 +/- 0.73 mg/l Fe/Zn/5.39 +/- 2.73 mg/l Zn; T: 1.71 +/- 1.01 mg/l Fe/1.46 +/- 0.99 mg/l Fe, 0.54 +/- 0.29 mg/l Cu/0.49 +/- 0.19 mg/l Cu, 6.97 +/- 2.82 mg/l Zn/6.75 +/- 2.62 mg/l Zn. There was a significant reduction in the levels of Fe, Cu and Zn in the samples of pasteurized colostrum. These results suggest that, despite the observance of a diminution in the levels of Fe, Cu and Zn in the samples of pasteurized colostrum, the values fell within the acceptable range for the specific nutritional needs of new-born infants during this period of lactation.

Measurements of nuclear data parameters of 201Tl by gamma-ray spectrometry.

201Tl is frequently used in radiopharmaceutical applications, and therefore the gamma-ray emission probabilities and half-life have been re-determined by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy. While the activity was calibrated using the sum-peak coincidence method, the half-life was obtained by the reference source method based on simultaneous counting of a reference source and the sample. Both the measurement techniques and assignment of uncertainties are presented and discussed, and the resulting data are shown to be in good agreement with previously published studies.

National intercomparison program for radiopharmaceutical activity measurements.

Since 1998, the National Laboratory for Ionizing Radiation Metrology has lead an intercomparison program for activity measurements of radiopharmaceuticals administered to patients in the Nuclear Medicine Services (NMS) with the purpose of promoting the quality control. In this work, intercomparison results with the radionuclides 67Ga, 123I, 99mTc and 201Tl from the beginning of the program to the present will be presented establishing as a consequence, the radionuclide calibrators' traceability used by the participants. The analysis of the results showed that 68% were within the limits of +/-10% required by the Brazilian Regulatory Authority that demands this accuracy band for the radiopharmaceutical measurements in the NMS. The results also demonstrate an improvement in the measurement quality that this program has provided since its beginning.
