Hemangiomas of infancy--a clinical review.

Hemangiomas of infancy are the most common benign tumors of childhood. They are composed of proliferating endothelial tumor cells and usually manifest as cutaneous birthmarks. In most cases, these tumors characteristically follow a natural course of regression. However, they can cause a tremendous amount of anxiety. Hemangiomas can threaten vital life processes if located in certain areas of the body. They may also be part of larger syndromes associated with high rates of life-changing morbidity and mortality. In all of these situations, hemangiomas are often referred due to the uncertainties that exist regarding the most efficacious diagnosis and management.

Skin care of the healthy newborn.

Routine care of a newborn may be an intimidating task for new parents. This routine care includes tending to the skin of the infant. Maintaining a healthy, intact cutaneous barrier is important psychologically for the parent and medically for the child. Clinicians should be able to offer guidance concerning the basics of skin care, to dispel any misconceptions concerning baby products, and to optimize cutaneous integrity for the comfort and well being of the infant.

Pityriasis alba.

Pityriasis alba (PA) is a common benign condition in children that has no definitive treatment. Its etiology and pathogenesis are still poorly understood. Recent studies have found direct correlations between the incidence of PA and atopy, amount of sun exposure, lack of sunscreen use, and frequency of bathing. It is often an incidental finding on physical examination because it is usually asymptomatic. Although treatment with emollients and mild topical corticosteroids may accelerate the repigmentation, they have limited efficacy. Without intervention, the lesions normally resolve within months to years. Extensive PA and pigmenting PA are rarer variants.

Tinea faciei, an often deceptive facial eruption.

Tinea faciei is a relatively uncommon superficial dermatophyte infection limited to the glabrous skin of the face. It is usually seen in pediatric patients. This fungus can be found worldwide, but has a predilection for tropical humid climates. Although the infecting organisms and treatments are the same as for other superficial fungal infections, it is frequently misdiagnosed clinically and histologically.

Pyogenic granuloma.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is an acquired vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes common to the pediatric age group. PG appears as a solitary red nodule on the head or neck. The nodule is prone to hemorrhage, and bleeding is often refractory to pressure. The etiology of PG is unknown, but proposed agents include trauma, infection, and preceding dermatoses. Several surgical treatments are available with variable cosmetic results and recurrence rates.
