Synthesis and characterization of cationic tungsten(V) methylidynes.

Cationic tungsten(V) methylidynes [L4W(X)[triple bond]CH]+[B(C6F5)4]- [L = PMe3, 0.5dmpe (dmpe = Me2PCH2CH2PMe2), X = Cl, OSO2CF3] have been prepared in high yield by a one-electron oxidation of the neutral tungsten(IV) methylidynes L4W(X)[triple bond]CH with [Ph3C]+[B(C6F5)4]-. The ease and reversibility of the one-electron oxidation of L4W(X)[triple bond]CH were demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry in tetrahydrofuran (E1/2 is approximately -0.68 to -0.91 V vs Fc). The paramagnetic d1 (S = 1/2) complexes were characterized in solution by electron spin resonance (g = 2.023-2.048, quintets due to coupling to 31P) and NMR spectroscopy and Evans magnetic susceptibility measurements (mu = 2.0-2.1 muB). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed that the cationic methylidynes are structurally similar to the neutral precursor methylidynes. In addition, the neutral (PMe3)4W(Cl)[triple bond]CH was deprotonated with a strong base at the trimethylphosphine ligand to afford (PMe3)3(Me2PCH2)W[triple bond]CH, a tungsten(IV) methylidyne complex that features a (dimethylphosphino)methyl ligand.

Regioselective trapping of terminal di-, tri-, and tetraynes with benzyl azide.

[Structure: see text] The reaction of benzyl azide with terminal di-, tri-, and tetraynes appended with a range of functional groups has been explored. Standard reaction conditions for BnN3 catalyzed by CuSO4.5H2O gave alkynyl, butadiynyl, and hexatriynyl triazoles in moderate to good yields. The reaction proceeds regioselectively as determined by the X-ray crystallographic analysis of three derivatives (1c, 1d, and 3c), and no evidence of multiple azide addition to the polyyne framework is observed.

Diastereoselective [4 + 4]-photocycloaddition reactions of pyran-2-ones: rapid access to functionalized 5-8-5 skeletons.

Fused bicyclic pyran-2-ones with pendant furan side chains and an oxygenated stereogenic center adjacent to the pyranone ring oxygen were prepared via FeCl(3)-catalyzed Michael addition. Irradiation furnished the corresponding lactone-bridged tricyclic [4 + 4]-cycloadducts with good facial selectivity. Surprisingly, the major isomer resulted from approach of the furan from the same face as the protected alcohol. [reaction: see text]

Proton sponge phosphines: electrospray-active ligands.

Attachment of a proton sponge to a phosphine ligand renders neutral complexes of the ligand highly amenable to analysis by electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The ligand 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthyldiphenylphosphine (3) is extremely efficient and highly selective in forming exclusively [M + H]+ ions, which may be detected at very low concentration. Ionisation efficiency of 3 in the presence of H+ approached 100%. The bis-substituted ligand bis{1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthyl}phenylphosphine (4) was also prepared and characterised, as were Fe(CO)4- (5c), Mn(eta5-C5H4Me)(CO)2- (6) and W(CO)5- (7) complexes of 3. Compounds 3, 3.HBr.EtOH, 4 and 5c were all structurally characterised.

Rh(I) and Ir(i) derivatives of a P(S),N-substituted indene ligand: synthetic, structural, and catalytic alkene hydrosilylation studies.

Treatment of 1-PiPr2-indene or 1-PiPr2-2-NMe2-indene (1a) with elemental sulfur afforded 3-iPr2P(S)-indene or 1-iPr2P(S)-2-NMe2-indene (4a) in 81% and 85% isolated yield, respectively. Addition of 4a to [(COD)M(THF)2]+BF4- afforded the corresponding [(COD)M(kappa2-N,S-4a)]+BF4- complexes (M = Rh, 5a, 76%; M = Ir, 5b, 59%; COD = eta4-1,5-cyclooctadiene), which were found to exhibit temperature-dependent NMR spectral features that were rationalized in terms of a dynamic process involving M-NMe2 dissociation, rotation about the indenyl-NMe2 bond, inversion at nitrogen, and re-coordination to M. Analysis of variable-temperature NMR data collected for 5a and 5b each yielded a value for DeltaG(double dagger) of ca. 14 kcal/mol for this process. Exposure of 5a or 5b to NaN(SiMe3)2 generated the corresponding (COD)M(kappa2-C,S-1-iPr2P(S)-2-NMe2-(C1-indenyl)) complex (M = Rh, 6a, 70%; M = Ir, 6b, 86%) in which the metal is incorporated into an M-C-P-S ring via coordination to the indenyl ring in an eta1-fashion, as well as to sulfur. Alternatively, complex 6b was prepared cleanly via lithiation of 4a followed by treatment with 0.5 equiv of [(COD)IrCl]2. The ability of 5a,b and 6a,b to mediate the addition of triethylsilane to styrene was also explored, and their performance was compared with that of Wilkinson's Catalyst ((PPh3)3RhCl) and Crabtree's catalyst ([(COD)Ir(PCy3)(Py)]+PF6-; Cy = cyclohexyl; Py = pyridine). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data are provided for 4a, 2-NMe2-3-iPr2P(S)-indene (4b), 6a, and 6b.

Various coordination modes of the bis(di(o-N,N-dimethylanilinyl)phosphino)methane ligand in mononuclear and binuclear complexes of group 8 and group 9 metals.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of compounds involving the bis(di(o-N,N-dimethylanilinyl)phosphino)methane (dmapm) ligand are described. The mononuclear complexes [MCl(CO)(P,N-dmapm)] (M = Rh, Ir) have a square-planar geometry in which the dmapm ligand chelates via a phosphine functionality and an adjacent amino group. The carbonyl ligand lies opposite the amine, while the chloro ligand is trans to the phosphine. The related complex [RhI(CO)(P,N-dmapm)] has also been prepared. All compounds are highly fluxional by at least three independent processes, as discussed for the rhodium-chloro species. A diiridium complex, [Ir(2)Cl2(CO)2(P,N,P',N'-dmapm)], and the closely related rhodium/iridium analogue, [RhIrCl2(CO)2(P,N,P',N'-dmapm)], have been prepared in which the metals are bridged by the diphosphine group while an amino group at each end of the diphosphine is also coordinating to each metal on opposite faces of the MIrP2 plane (M = Ir or Rh). For the Ir2 species, the carbonyl and chloro groups are again shown to be opposite the amine and phosphine functionalites, respectively. The mononuclear complex [Ru(CO)3(P,P'-dmapm)] has also been prepared. In contrast to the mononuclear species of rhodium and iridium, the dmapm group chelates the ruthenium center through both phosphorus atoms, occupying one axial and one equatorial site of Ru in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Reaction of this Ru species with 1/2 equiv of the complexes [RhClL2]2 (L2 = COD, (C2H4)2, (CO)2) yields the unstable Rh/Ru product [RhRuCl(CO)3(P,N,P',N'-dmapm)].

Tuning "kappticity" of tripodal ligands.

The synthesis and structural characterization of a series of tripodal tris(phosphine) ligands, containing SiMe2 elbow groups, is described. The significant steric congestion in these ligands, due to the silylmethyl substituents, is manifest both in the solid-state structures and in the solution NMR spectra of the free ligands. Variable temperature 1H{31P} NMR studies of one of the ligands, CH3C(SiMe2PEt2)3 (4b) gave an estimated barrier to rotation around the Si-Capical bonds of approximately 10.4 kcal mol(-1). Octahedral kappa2- and kappa3-molybdenum complexes of these ligands also demonstrate the impact of the additional bulk imparted by the SiMe2 substituents, and the high Lewis basicity of these phosphines, with subtle changes at the apical and phosphine substituents changing the overall coordination chemistry observed.

Acetylenic carbon-13 chemical shift tensors for diphenylacetylene and (eta2-Diphenylacetylene)Pt(PPh3)2: a solid-state NMR and theoretical study.

The structure of (eta2-diphenylacetylene)Pt(PPh3) (2), as well as those of its dichloromethane and benzene solvates, is determined via X-ray crystallography. An investigation of the chemical shift (CS) tensors of the 13C-labeled carbons in Ph13C13CPh and (eta2-Ph13C13CPh)Pt(PPh3)2.(C6H6) is carried out via analysis of 13C NMR spectra from stationary solid samples. The principal components of the CS tensors as well as their orientations with respect to the 13C,13C internuclear vector are determined. DFT calculations of these CS tensors are in close agreement with the experimental values. For diphenylacetylene (tolane), the orientations and principal-component magnitudes of the alkynyl carbon CS tensors are comparable to those for other alkynyl carbons, although the CS tensor is not axially symmetric in this case. Coordination to platinum causes a change in the CS tensor orientation and a net increase in the isotropic chemical shift, resulting from a significant increase in two principal components (delta11 and delta33) while the third (delta22) decreases only slightly. The measured carbon CS tensors in the platinum complex bear a striking similarity to those of the alkenyl carbons in trans-Ph(H)C=C(H)Ph, and a short theoretical discussion of these observations is presented.

Intramolecular pi-dimerization in a 1,1'-bis(verdazyl)ferrocene diradical.

The solid state structure of 1,1'-bis(verdazyl)ferrocene reveals the two radical moieties associated intramolecularly to give the first example of a pi-dimer of a stable verdazyl radical. The pi-dimer structure is not maintained in solution. Magnetic characterization indicates that the radicals are sufficiently strongly antiferromagnetically coupled so as to render the molecule diamagnetic at room temperature.

Pathways to the first contact with specialist mental health care.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the pathways to mental health care followed by patients presenting for the first time to community- and hospital-based services and the degree to which individual characteristics, cultural background, illness type, severity and service-related variables influence the time and pathways taken to reach care. METHOD: One hundred and forty-six consecutive Australian-born, Asian and Arabic-speaking patients making their first lifetime contact with mental health services in two area health regions were included. Symptom severity was assessed using the Health of the Nations Outcome Scales. Illness explanatory models, social support, English-language proficiency and acculturation were also assessed. RESULTS: An average of three professional consultations were made prior to first contact with public mental health services. Family physicians occupied a pivotal role in the help-seeking pathway with 53% of patients consulting a general practitioner. The median time taken to reach specialist mental health services was 6 months, with significantly shorter time for patients with psychotic disorders. Individual variables such as gender, social support, ethnicity and English fluency were not associated with delays in receiving public mental health care. Ethnicity was associated with lower utilization of allied health professionals. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that social and cultural factors influence the range of professionals consulted by those with a mental illness but do not delay their presentation to public mental health services.

Arsinophosphonium cations from arsenium-phosphine and -bisphosphine coordination chemistry.

A new 14pi-electron tricyclic organoarsenium cation (5-hydrophenarsazinium, AN, C12H9AsN+) has been prepared in situ and used as a Lewis acceptor with trimethylphosphine, triphenylphosphine, bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), bis(dimethylphosphino)methane (dmpm), and 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb) ligands. Solid-state structures and spectroscopic characterization data are reported for complexes of the general formula [AN-PMe3]+, [AN-PPh3]+, [AN-dppm]+, [AN-dppm-AN]2+, [AN-dmpm-AN]2+, and [AN-dppb-AN]2+ as tetrachlorogallate salts. Depending on reaction stoichiometry, dppm forms adducts at one or both of the donor sites. Structural comparisons with analogous complexes of phosphenium cations provide interesting similarities and differences.

9,9-Di-n-octyl-9H-fluorene.

The title compound, C29H42, crystallizes from the melt as a triclinic crystal. The unit cell contains three crystallographically independent molecules. The three fluorene ring systems are oriented such that two non-equivalent ring systems related by a roto-translation are separated by a third ring system oriented orthogonally to them. The octyl chains of all three molecules are perpendicular to the fluorene ring system and force a 7.4 angstroms separation between the two coplanar molecules, thereby preventing molecular pi-stacking.

Dissociation of 2,4-bis(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-cyclo-1,3-dipnicta-2,4-diazanes (pnict = P, As, Sb) imposed by substituent steric strain: a cyclobutane/olefin analogy.

Three 2,4-bis(Mes)-cyclo-1,3-dipnicta-2,4-diazanes, 2PnX, have been synthesized as 1,3-dichloro- (Pn = As; X = Cl) or 1,3-bis(triflato)- (Pn = P, Sb; X = OTf) derivatives (Mes = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl; OTf = triflato = trifluoromethanesulfonoxy). The compounds have been structurally characterized as cyclodimers, but spectroscopic characterization of melts and solutions indicates facile dissociation of the diphosphadiazane 2POTf derivative to give the corresponding iminophosphine 1POTf and of the diarsadiazane 2AsCl derivative to give the corresponding iminoarsine 1AsCl. 1,3-Bis(triflato)-2,4-bis(Mes)-cyclo-1,3-distiba-2,4-diazane (2SbOTf) does not dissociate in the melt or in solution. The presence of the sterically bulky Mes substituent does not preclude association of N-Pn olefin analogues to give single bonded cyclobutane analogues. The facile dissociation of 2POTf and isolation of 1POTf implicates a relatively high degree of substituent steric strain in the dimer. In comparison, dissociation of 2AsCl is only apparent in the melt and in solution, likely the result of the lower substituent strain in the larger N(2)As(2) framework. The largest N(2)Pn(2) framework in 2SbOTf provides sufficient space for the Mes substituents, and the monomer is not observed under the conditions examined.

Unprecedented coordination modes and demetalation pathways for unbridged polyenyl ligands. Ruthenium eta1,eta4-cycloheptadienyl complexes from allyl/alkyne cycloaddition.

Cationic (eta6-hexamethylbenzene)ruthenium(II) mediates the [3 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of allyl and alkyne ligands, leading to the unexpected isolation of eta1,eta4-cycloheptadienyl complexes, an unprecedented coordination mode for transition metal complexes of simple organic rings. The nonconjugated, eta1,eta4-coordinated complex is obtained as the kinetic reaction product from treatment of the unsubstituted allyl complex with excess ethyne; this complex rearranges slowly at 80 degrees C to the thermodynamically more stable conjugated eta5-cycloheptadienyl isomer. The eta1,eta4-coordinated isomer is fluxional at room temperature, undergoing rapid and reversible equilibration with a cycloheptatriene hydride intermediate via facile beta-hydride elimination/reinsertion. The reinsertion process is remarkably regioselective, returning the nonconjugated eta1,eta4-cycloheptadienyl isomer exclusively at room temperature. For reactions incorporating dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (DMAD) as one or both of the alkyne components, eta1,eta4-coordination appears to be both kinetically and thermodynamically favored, despite undergoing equilibration among all possible eta1,eta4-cycloheptadienyl and cycloheptatriene hydride isomers prior to arriving at one observed eta1,eta4-isomer. For this series, no isomerization to eta5-coordination is observed even upon prolonged heating. In contrast, the cyclization incorporating both DMAD and phenylacetylene proceeds directly to the eta5-cycloheptadienyl isomer at or below room temperature, indicating that eta5-coordination remains energetically accessible to this system. The DMAD-based cyclization reactions produce structurally diverse minor byproducts, including both eta1,eta4-methanocyclohexadiene and acyclic eta3,eta2-heptadienyl isomers, which have been isolated and rigorously characterized. The unusual eta1,eta4-coordination of the seven-membered ring leads to unique new organic products upon oxidative demetalation by iodinolysis. Thus, reactions with excess iodine afford bridged tricyclic cyclopropane-containing lactones or substituted cycloheptatrienes in good but sometimes variable yields, depending on the substrate and specific reaction conditions. The ruthenium in these reactions is returned in high yield as the interesting cationic mu-triiodo pseudodimer of (eta6-hexamethylbenzene)ruthenium, which is obtained as a triiodide salt. This Ru(III) complex, along with several representative Ru(II) cyclization products, has been characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography.

A 1H/19F minicoil NMR probe for solid-state NMR: application to 5-fluoroindoles.

We show that it is feasible to use a minicoil for solid-state 19F 1H NMR experiments that has short pulse widths, good RF homogeneity, and excellent signal-to-noise for small samples while using low power amplifiers typical to liquid-state NMR. The closely spaced resonant frequencies of 1H and 19F and the ubiquitous use of fluorine in modern plastics and electronic components present two major challenges in the design of a high-sensitivity, high-field 1H/19F probe. Through the selection of specific components, circuit design, and pulse sequence, we were able to build a probe that has low 19F background and excellent separation of 1H and 19F signals. We determine the principle components of the chemical shift anisotropy tensor of 5-fluoroindole-3-acetic acid (5FIAA) and 5-fluorotryptophan. We also solve the crystal structure of 5FIAA, determine the orientation dependence of the chemical shift of a single crystal of 5FIAA, and predict the 19F chemical shift based on the orientation of the fluorine in the crystal. The results show that this 1H/19F probe is suitable for solid-state NMR experiments with low amounts of biological molecules that have been labeled with 19F.
