Interactions of 1-methylimidazole with UO2(CH3CO2)2 and UO2(NO3)2: structural, spectroscopic, and theoretical evidence for imidazole binding to the uranyl ion.

The first definitive high-resolution single-crystal X-ray structure for the coordination of the 1-methylimidazole (Meimid) ligand to UO2(Ac)2 (Ac = CH3CO2) is reported. The crystal structure evidence is confirmed by IR, Raman, and UV-vis spectroscopic data. Direct participation of the nitrogen atom of the Meimid ligand in binding to the uranium center is confirmed. Structural analysis at the DFT (B3LYP) level of theory showed a conformational difference of the Meimid ligand in the free gas-phase complex versus the solid state due to small energetic differences and crystal packing effects. Energetic analysis at the MP2 level in the gas phase supported stronger Meimid binding over H2O binding to both UO2(Ac)2 and UO2(NO3)2. In addition, self-consistent reaction field COSMO calculations were used to assess the aqueous phase energetics of combination and displacement reactions involving H2O and Meimid ligands to UO2R2 (R = Ac, NO3). For both UO2(NO3)2 and UO2(Ac)2, the displacement of H2O by Meimid was predicted to be energetically favorable, consistent with experimental results that suggest Meimid may bind uranyl at physiological pH. Also, log(Knitrate/KAc) calculations supported experimental evidence that the binding stoichiometry of the Meimid ligand is dependent upon the nature of the reactant uranyl complex. These results clearly demonstrate that imidazole binds to uranyl and suggest that binding of histidine residues to uranyl could occur under normal biological conditions.

The opposite effect of temperature on polyethylene glycol-based aqueous biphasic systems versus aqueous biphasic extraction chromatographic resins.

Variation in operational temperatures has revealed differences in the partitioning behavior of probe solutes between the phases in aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) and the related aqueous biphasic extraction chromatographic resin (ABEC). This difference has been studied using the hydrophobic anion, 99TcO4-, as a probe and (NH4)2SO4 as the kosmotropic salt. Distribution of the hydrophobic anion 99TcO4- to the PEG-rich phase in a MePEG-5000/(NH4)2SO4 ABS increases with increasing temperature, but decreases are observed in batch uptakes of this anion to ABEC resins from (NH4)2SO4 solutions. Phase diagrams were constructed at five different temperatures from 10 to 50 degreesC using cloud point titration for the ABS and a correlation between the phase divergence, measured in terms of tie line length (TLL), and the temperature of the partitioning system was verified. Thermodynamic parameters (deltaHdegrees, deltaSdegrees, deltaGdegrees, ) as a function of temperature were calculated for the various systems studied and the results imply thermodynamic differences between partitioning in ABS versus ABEC.

Accurate thermochemical properties for energetic materials applications. I. Heats of formation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles and energetic precursor molecules from electronic structure theory.

The heats of formation of 1H-imidazole, 1H-1,2,4-trizazole, 1H-tetrazole, CH3NO2, CH3N3, CH3NH2, CH2CHNO2, HClO4, and phenol, as well as cations and anions derived from some of the molecules have been calculated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. These molecules are important as models for compounds used for energetic materials synthesis. The predicted heats of formation of the heterocycle-based compounds are in excellent agreement with available experimental values and those derived from proton affinities and deprotonation enthalpies to <1 kcal/mol. The predicted value for the tetrazolium cation differs substantially from the experimental value, likely due to uncertainty in the measurement. The heats of formation of the nitro and amino molecules, as well as phenol/phenolate, also are in good agreement with the experimental values (<1.5 kcal/mol). The heat of formation of CH3N3 is predicted to be 72.8 kcal/mol at 298 K with an estimated error bar of +/-1 kcal/mol on the basis of the agreement between the calculated and experimental values for DeltaH(f)(HN3). The heat of formation at 298 K of HClO4 is -0.4 kcal/mol, in very good agreement with the experimental value, as well as a W2 literature study. An extrapolation of the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(Q,5) energies was required to obtain this agreement. This result suggests that very large basis sets (> or =aug-cc-pV5Z) may be needed to fully recover the valence correlation energy contribution in compounds containing elements with high formal oxidation states at the central atom. In addition tight d functions are needed for the geometry predictions. Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DKH) scalar relativistic corrections for HClO4 and ClO4- at the MP2 level with correlation-consistent DKH basis sets were predicted to be large, likely due to the high formal oxidation state at the Cl.

In search of ionic liquids incorporating azolate anions.

Twenty-eight novel salts with tetramethyl-, tetraethyl-, and tetrabutylammonium and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cations paired with 3,5-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolate, 4-nitro-1,2,3-triazolate, 2,4-dinitroimidazolate, 4,5-dinitroimidazolate, 4,5-dicyanoimidazolate, 4-nitroimidazolate, and tetrazolate anions have been prepared and characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The effects of cation and anion type and structure on the physicochemical properties of the resulting salts, including several ionic liquids, have been examined and discussed. Ionic liquids (defined as having m.p.<100 degrees C) were obtained with all combinations of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation ([C(4)mim](+)) and the heterocyclic azolate anions studied, and with several combinations of tetraethyl or tetrabutylammonium cations and the azolate anions. The [C(4)mim](+) azolates were liquid at room temperature exhibiting large liquid ranges and forming glasses on cooling with glass-transition temperatures in the range of -53 to -82 degrees C (except for the 3,5-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolate salt with m.p. 33 degrees C). Six crystal structures of the corresponding tetraalkylammonium salts were determined and the effects of changes to the cations and anions on the packing of the structure have been investigated.

Combustible ionic liquids by design: is laboratory safety another ionic liquid myth?

The non-flammability of ionic liquids (ILs) is often highlighted as a safety advantage of ILs over volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but the fact that many ILs are not flammable themselves does not mean that they are safe to use near fire and/or heat sources; a large group of ILs (including commercially available ILs) are combustible due to the nature of their positive heats of formation, oxygen content, and decomposition products.

Solution and structural investigations of ligand preorganization in trivalent lanthanide complexes of bicyclic malonamides.

This report describes an investigation into the coordination chemistry of trivalent lanthanides in solution and the solid state with acyclic and preorganized bicyclic malonamide ligands. Two experimental investigations were performed: solution binding affinities were determined through single-phase spectrophotometric titrations and the extent of conformational change upon binding was investigated with single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Both experimental methods compare the bicyclic malonamide (BMA), which is designed to be preorganized for binding trivalent lanthanides, to an analogous acyclic malonamide. Results from the spectrophotometric titrations indicate that BMA exhibits a 10-100x increase in binding affinity to Ln(III) over acyclic malonamide. In addition, BMA forms compounds with high ligand-metal ratios, even when competing with water and nitrate ligands for binding sites. The crystal structures exhibit no significant differences in the nature of the binding between Ln(III) and the BMA or acyclic malonamide. These results support the conclusion that rational ligand design can lead to compounds that enhance the binding affinities within a ligand class.

Prediction of the formation and stabilities of energetic salts and ionic liquids based on ab initio electronic structure calculations.

A computational approach to predict the thermodynamics for forming a variety of imidazolium-based salts and ionic liquids from typical starting materials is described. The gas-phase proton and methyl cation acidities of several protonating and methylating agents, as well as the proton and methyl cation affinities of many important methyl-, nitro-, and cyano-substituted imidazoles, have been calculated reliably by using the computationally feasible DFT (B3LYP) and MP2 (extrapolated to the complete basis set limit) methods. These accurately calculated proton and methyl cation affinities of neutrals and anions are used in conjunction with an empirical approach based on molecular volumes to estimate the lattice enthalpies and entropies of ionic liquids, organic solids, and organic liquids. These quantities were used to construct a thermodynamic cycle for salt formation to reliably predict the ability to synthesize a variety of salts including ones with potentially high energetic densities. An adjustment of the gas phase thermodynamic cycle to account for solid- and liquid-phase chemistries provides the best overall assessment of salt formation and stability. This has been applied to imidazoles (the cation to be formed) with alkyl, nitro, and cyano substituents. The proton and methyl cation donors studied were as follows: HCl, HBr, HI, (HO)2SO2, HSO3CF3 (TfOH), and HSO3(C6H4)CH3 (TsOH); CH3Cl, CH3Br, CH3I, (CH3O)2SO2, CH3SO3CF3 (TfOCH3), and CH3SO3(C6H4)CH3 (TsOCH3). As substitution of the cation with electron-withdrawing groups increases, the triflate reagents appear to be the best overall choice as protonating and methylating agents. Even stronger alkylating agents should be considered to enhance the chances of synthetic success. When using the enthalpies of reaction for the gas-phase reactants (eq 6) to form a salt, a cutoff value of -13 kcal mol(-1) or lower (more negative) should be used as the minimum value for predicting whether a salt can be synthesized.

Factors controlling metal-ion selectivity in the binding sites of calcium-binding proteins. The metal-binding properties of amide donors. A crystallographic and thermodynamic study.

The metal-ion complexing properties of the ligand EDTAM (ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetamide) are investigated as a model for the role of amide oxygen donors in the binding sites of Ca-binding proteins. The structures of the complexes [Ca(EDTAM)NO3]NO3 (1), [La(EDTAM)(H2O)4](NO3)3.H2O (2), and [Cd(EDTAM)(NO3)]NO3 (3) are reported: 1 monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 10.853(2) angstroms, b = 12.893(3) angstroms, c = 13.407(3) angstroms, beta = 103.28(3) degrees, Z = 4, R = 0.0281; 2 triclinic, P, a = 8.695(2) angstroms, b = 9.960(2) angstroms, c = 16.136(3) angstroms, alpha = 95.57(3) degrees, beta = 94.84(3) degrees, gamma = 98.72(3) degrees, Z = 2, R = 0.0394; 3 monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 10.767(2) angstroms, b = 12.952(2) angstroms, c = 13.273(2) angstroms, beta = 103.572(3) degrees, Z = 4, R = 0.0167. Compounds 1 and 3 are isostructural, and the EDTAM binds to the metal ion through its two N-donors and four O-donors from the amide groups. Ca(II) in 1 is 8-coordinate with a chelating NO3- group, while Cd(II) in 3 may possibly be 7-coordinate, with an asymmetrically coordinated NO3- that is best regarded as unidentate. The La(III) in 2 is coordinated to the EDTAM in a manner similar to that of 1 and 3, but it is 10-coordinate with four water molecules coordinated to the La(III). The formation constants (log K1) for complexes of a variety of metal ions with EDTAM are reported in 0.1 M NaNO3 at 25.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C. These are compared to the log K1 values for en (ethylenediamine) and THPED (N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxypropyl)-ethylenediamine). For large metal ions, such as Ca2+ or La3+, log K1 increases strongly when the four acetamide groups are added to en to give EDTAM, whereas for a small metal ion, such as Mg2+, this increase is small. The log K1 values for EDTAM compared to THPED suggest that the amide oxygen is a much stronger base than the alcoholic oxygen. Structures of binding sites in 40 Ca-binding proteins are examined. It is shown that the Ca-O=C bond angles involving coordinated amides in these sites are large, commonly being in the 150-180 degrees range. This is discussed in terms of the idea that for purely ionic bonding the M-O=C bond angle will approach 180 degrees, while for covalent bonding the angle should be closer to 120 degrees. How this fact might be used by the proteins to control selectivity for different metal ions is discussed.

Identical extraction behavior and coordination of trivalent or hexavalent f-element cations using ionic liquid and molecular solvents.

The extraction of both UO2(2+) and trivalent lanthanide and actinide ions (Am3+, Nd3+, Eu3+) by dialkylphosphoric or dialkylphosphinic acids from aqueous solutions into the ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide has been studied and compared to extractions into dodecane. Radiotracer partitioning measurements show comparable patterns of distribution ratios for both the ionic liquid/aqueous and dodecane/aqueous systems, and the limiting slopes at low acidity indicate the partitioning of neutral complexes in both solvent systems. The metal ion coordination environment, elucidated from EXAFS and UV-visible spectroscopy measurements, is equivalent in the ionic liquid and dodecane solutions with coordination of the uranyl cation by two hydrogen-bonded extractant dimers, and of the trivalent cations by three extractant dimers. This is the first definitive report of a system where both the biphasic extraction equilibria and metal coordination environment are the same in an ionic liquid and a molecular organic solvent.

High-resolution 13C NMR studies of cellulose and cellulose oligomers in ionic liquid solutions.

High-resolution 13C NMR studies of cellulose and cellulose oligomers dissolved in the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) show that the beta-(1-->4)-linked glucose oligomers are disordered in this medium and have a conformational behavior which parallels the one observed in water, and thus, reveal that the polymer is disordered in IL solution as well.

The novel ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 3,5-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolate has been synthesized and exhibits an unexpectedly low melting point (35 degrees C) considering the size and shape of the rigid, planar anion; analogous tetraalkylammonium salts (methyl, ethyl and n-butyl) have also been prepared and the tetraethylammonium example was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Application of polyethylene glycol-based aqueous biphasic reactive extraction to the catalytic oxidation of cyclic olefins.

Glutaric acid and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) have been synthesized by sodium tungstate catalyzed oxidation of the cyclic olefins: cyclopentene and 1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA), using hydrogen peroxide in a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-2000/NaHSO(4) aqueous biphasic system (PEG-ABS). The production of glutaric acid and BTCA was found to increase from the monophasic to the biphasic regimes, and was found to be greatest at short tie-line lengths (TLLs), close to the system's critical point, yielding glutaric acid and BTCA in 73.1 and 82.5% yield, respectively. The results imply that mutual mixing or contact of the components is important, because the product dicarboxylic acids were found to increase from the monophasic side to the critical point and decrease from the critical point to more divergent regimes. The two reactions were compared with adipic acid synthesis from cyclohexene in terms of the cyclic olefin structure, and the partitioning of the dicarboxylic acid product in the ABS.

Effects of speciation on partitioning of iodine in aqueous biphasic systems and onto ABEC resins.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) and PEG-grafted aqueous biphasic extraction chromatographic (ABEC) resins have been shown to remove inorganic species from environmental and nuclear wastes. The partitioning behavior of several iodide species (iodide, iodine, triiodide, iodate, and 4-iodo-2,6-dimethylphenol (I-DMP)) have been studied for PEG (MW 2000)-salt systems and ABEC resins. Iodide partitioning to PEG-rich phases or onto ABEC resins can be enhanced by derivatization with 2,6-dimethylphenol to form 4-iodo-2,6-dimethylphenol or by addition of I(2) to form triiodide. Conversely, iodide partitioning to the PEG-rich phase or onto ABEC resins is reduced by oxidation of iodide to IO(3)(-). Partitioning studies of iodide, iodate, and iodine in a PEG-ABS are compared to results using ABEC resins.

Crystal structures of imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide 'ionic liquid' salts: the first organic salt with a cis-TFSI anion conformation.

Crystal structures of two examples of an important class of ionic liquids, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium and 1,2,3-triethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The anion in the 1,3-dimethylimidazolium example (mp 22 degrees C), adopts an unusual cis-geometry constrained by bifurcated cation-anion C-H. . .O hydrogen-bonds from the imidazolium cation to the anion resulting in the formation of fluorous layers within the solid-state structure. In contrast, in the 1,2,3-triethylimidazolium salt (mp 57 degrees C), the ions are discretely packed with only weak C-H. . .O contacts between the ions close to the van der Waals separation distances, and with the anion adopting the twisted conformation observed for all other examples from the limited set of organic bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide crystal structures. The structures are discussed in terms of the favorable physical properties that bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions impart in ionic liquids.

Extraction of cesium ions from aqueous solutions using calix[4]arene-bis(tert-octylbenzo-crown-6) in ionic liquids.

Solvent extraction of cesium ions from aqueous solution to hydrophobic ionic liquids without the introduction of an organophilic anion in the aqueous phase was demonstrated using calix[4]arene-bis(tert-octylbenzo-crown-6) (BOBCalixC6) as an extractant. The selectivity of this extraction process toward cesium ions and the use of a sacrificial cation exchanger (NaBPh(4)) to control loss of imidazolium cation to the aqueous solutions by ion exchange have been investigated.
