Compact efficient broadband grating coupler for silicon-on-insulator waveguides.

We have designed a high-efficiency broadband grating coupler for coupling between silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides and optical fibers. The grating is only 13 microm long and 12 microm wide, and the size of the grooves is optimized numerically. For TE polarization the coupling loss to single-mode fiber is below 1 dB over a 35-nm wavelength range when using SOI with a two-pair bottom reflector. The tolerances to fabrication errors are also calculated.

Polarization-selective beam splitter based on a highly efficient simple binary diffraction grating.

A polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a giant-reflection to zero-order (GIRO) grating is presented. The GIRO grating is a simple binary diffraction grating with parameters chosen such that the excited optical modes in the grating interfere constructively and destructively at the respective interfaces. This interference results in high-zero-order reflection (>99%) with a high polarization-selective extinction ratio (+/-30 dB). The grating shows a low aspect ratio. The GIRO PBS is theoretically and experimentally shown to be an adequate PBS for use as an optical isolator in combination with a quarter-wave plate in a CO2-laser system.

Performance analysis of a multimode waveguide-based optical disk readout system.

We propose a method to improve the optical resolution to read out optical disks, without making the spot size on the disk smaller than the diffraction limit. The idea is to reconstruct the bit pattern from the complete field profile (including amplitude and phase) of the light reflected from the disk. We measure the phase and amplitude information by picking up the wave front into different modes of a bimodal waveguide. Once picked up, these modes can be split by a photonic integrated circuit to be measured by separate detectors. By combining the information from the responses from the different modes, we can improve the bit error rate substantially.

Direct writing of microlenses in polycarbonate with excimer laser ablation.

A method for fabricating microlenses in polycarbonate material is reported. Using a direct-write technique based on scanning excimer laser ablation with a circular beam, we can etch an arbitrary shape in the polymer material. The beam is obtained by imaging a circular aperture onto the polymer surface, and scanning is realized by the translation stage carrying the sample, which makes successive contours with well-chosen diameters and scan velocities. Afterward, to smooth the ablated surface and release it from debris, a large beam aperture covering the full lens area is used to ablate the lens deeper into the substrate. The fabrication process and the characterization method are described, including calculation of the contour set for a desired lens shape. The optical performance is evaluated by Mach-Zehnder interferometry, showing that aberrations below lambda/10 are possible for slow lenses.

Compact spot-size converters with fiber-matched antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides.

We propose a concept for InGaAsP-InP 1.55-microm lasers integrated with spot-size converters based on modal interference between the modes of the structure formed by an active waveguide and an underlying fiber-matched antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide. Simulation results show that the spot-size converters exhibit low transformation loss, and narrowed far-field emission patterns (10 degrees x 20 degrees) and reduce the coupling loss to standard single-mode fibers from 8 to 2.6 dB over lengths approximately 200 microm shorter than the adiabatic concept. A tolerant design to fabrication variations is also proposed, which could be realized by standard processing techniques.

Scattering at sidewall roughness in photonic crystal slabs.

We have simulated the effect of sidewall roughness in photonic-crystallike structures with different vertical refractive-index contrast. We treated the scattering off a sidewall irregularity as a radiating dipole excited by the incident waveguide mode. We show that the loss that is due to this scattering is significantly larger for structures with a low refractive-index contrast (such as GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides) than for structures with a high vertical index contrast (such as silicon-on-insulators and membranes).

Rigorous electromagnetic analysis of dipole emission in periodically corrugated layers: the grating-assisted resonant-cavity light-emitting diode.

We study the grating-assisted light-emitting diode, an LED design for high brightness based on a resonant cavity containing one- or two-dimensionally periodically corrugated layers (grating). We give in detail a generally applicable electromagnetic analysis based on the rigorous coupled-wave theory to calculate the extraction efficiency of spontaneous emission in a periodically corrugated layer structure. This general model is then specified on the grating-assisted resonant-cavity LED, showing simulated efficiencies of more than 40%.
