Isoflurane produces delayed preconditioning against spinal cord ischemic injury via release of free radicals in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Whether isoflurane preconditioning produces delayed neuroprotection in the spinal cord is unclear. The authors tested the hypothesis that isoflurane produces delayed preconditioning against spinal cord ischemic injury and, further, that the beneficial effect is dependent on free radicals. METHODS: In experiment 1, 63 rabbits were randomly assigned to seven groups (n = 9 each): Animals in the control group only underwent spinal cord ischemia without pretreatment; animals in the Iso24h, Iso48h, and Iso72h groups received 40 min of 1.0 minimum alveolar concentration isoflurane in 100% oxygen each day for 5 consecutive days, with the last pretreatment at 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively, before spinal cord ischemia; animals in the O2 24h, O2 48h, and O2 72h groups received 40 min of 100% oxygen each day for 5 consecutive days, with the last pretreatment at 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively, before spinal cord ischemia. In experiment 2, 48 rabbits were randomly assigned into four groups (n = 12 each): Animals in the O2 and Iso groups received 3 ml/kg saline intraperitoneally 1 h before each session of oxygen pretreatment and isoflurane pretreatment, respectively. In the DMTU+Iso and DMTU+O2 groups, 10% dimethylthiourea (DMTU, a potent free radical scavenger) dissolved in saline (3 ml/kg) was administered at the same time point. Twenty-four hours after the last pretreatment, animals were subjected to spinal cord ischemia. Spinal cord ischemia was induced by an infrarenal aorta clamping for 20 min. Forty-eight hours after reperfusion, neurologic function and histopathology of the spinal cord were examined. RESULTS: In experiment 1, the neurologic and histopathologic outcomes in the Iso24h and Iso48h groups were better than those in the control group (P < 0.005 for each comparison); the neurologic and histopathologic outcomes in the control group showed no significant differences in comparison with the O2 24h, O2 48h, O2 72h, and Iso72h groups (P > 0.05 for each comparison). In experiment 2, the neurologic and histopathologic outcomes in the Iso group were better than those in the DMTU+Iso, O2, and DMTU+O2 groups (P < 0.01 for each comparison); there were no significant differences in the neurologic and histopathologic outcomes among the DMTU+Iso, O2, and DMTU+O2 groups (P > 0.05 for each comparison). CONCLUSIONS: Isoflurane produces delayed preconditioning against spinal cord ischemic injury, and the beneficial effect may be dependent on the release of free radicals.

Table detection in online ink notes.

In documents, tables are important structured objects that present statistical and relational information. In this paper, we present a robust system which is capable of detecting tables from free style online ink notes and extracting their structure so that they can be further edited in multiple ways. First, the primative structure of tables, i.e., candidates for ruling lines and table bounding boxes, are detected among drawing strokes. Second, the logical structure of tables is determined by normalizing the table skeletons, identifying the skeleton structure, and extracting the cell contents. The detection process is similar to a decision tree so that invalid candidates can be ruled out quickly. Experimental results suggest that our system is robust and accurate in dealing with tables having complex structure or drawn under complex situations.

A Kir2.1 gain-of-function mutation underlies familial atrial fibrillation.

The inward rectifier K(+) channel Kir2.1 mediates the potassium I(K1) current in the heart. It is encoded by KCNJ2 gene that has been linked to Andersen's syndrome. Recently, strong evidences showed that Kir2.1 channels were associated with mouse atrial fibrillation (AF), therefore we hypothesized that KCNJ2 was associated with familial AF. Thirty Chinese AF kindreds were evaluated for mutations in KCNJ2 gene. A valine-to-isoleucine mutation at position 93 (V93I) of Kir2.1 was found in all affected members in one kindred. This valine and its flanking sequence is highly conserved in Kir2.1 proteins among different species. Functional analysis of the V93I mutant demonstrated a gain-of-function consequence on the Kir2.1 current. This effect is opposed to the loss-of-function effect of previously reported mutations in Andersen's syndrome. Kir2.1 V93I mutation may play a role in initiating and/or maintaining AF by increasing the activity of the inward rectifier K(+) channel.

[Rapid identification of Oncomelania hupensis snail habitat in the Poyang Lake region by Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS)].

OBJECTIVE: To identify Oncomelania hupensis snail habitats and areas with high transmission potential by GIS/RS. METHODS: Marshland areas near high endemic villages of schistosomiasis in the Poyang Lake region were selected. Corresponding map was digitized and (Landsat 5 TM) image was corrected according to the digital map. The image in dry seasons was calculated by both normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and tasseled cap model. RESULTS: Result showed that snails spots were distributed in class 6, 7 and 8. Farther analysis of both NDVI and tasseled cap model showed that the snail habitats were mainly distributed in the areas where NDVI value was more than 110, and in tasseled cap wetness value between -10 to 3 with correction rate 94.93%. CONCLUSION: First step was to use unsupervised classification to define the class 6, 7 and 8 snail habitat environment. Second step was to extract the value by NDVI model, and to define a healthy vegetation as snail suspicious habitat when NDVI value was more than 110. Then the third step was to use tasseled cap wetness model to define the areas as snail habitats which value was between -10 to 3.
