The effect of blood flow upon the activity of gallamine triethiodide.

The onset, depth and recovery from paralysis produced by gallamine triethiodide were studied using the tibialis anterior muscle/sciatic nerve preparation in mongrel dogs, during changes in blood flow to this muscle. A roller pump was used to effect the blood flow changes via an aorto-femoral shunt. The onset and depth of paralysis were related directly to muscle blood flow. There was no correlation between the rate of recovery from paralysis and the blood flow to the muscle.

Carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the Alaskan Arctic Eskimo.

The effect of a low total carbohydrate low sucrose diet on various parameters of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism was studied among residents of a North Slope Alaskan Eskimo village. For comparative purposes a group of Eskimo youths consuming a higher carbohydrate institutional diet was also stidied. Those Eskimos consuming their native diet had unusually low serum triglycerides and very low density lipoproteins and normal glucose and tolbutamide tolerance tests. Eskimos on a higher carbohydrate diet exhibited significant elevations of triglycerides and minor alterations in glucose tolerance testing. Differences in cholesterol intake between these groups were accompanied by changes in serum cholesterol and low density lipoprotein levels. Unusually high levels of free fatty acids without ketonemia in the North Slope sample were noted as well.

Treatment of intermittent claudication. Lumbar paravertebral somatic block with phenol.

Our experience of twenty-eight patients with intermittent claudication treated by means of paravertebral lumbar somatic nerve block is presented. There was immediate demonstrable improvement in 92-5% of the twenty-six patients included in this follow up. At the end of 6 months the improvement was maintained in 72-7% of the patients and in about 70-0% of patients at 6 months and at 9 months. Six of the seven patients followed up for 1 year had a claudication distance at least twice that prior to the block. The results of this indicate that lumbar somatic nerve block is less disturbing and more effective than other forms of conservative treatment for intermittent claudication.

Interaction of diazepam with the muscle-relaxant drugs.

Diazepam has been found to increase the duration of the neuromuscular block produced by gallamine and to reduce that produced by succinylcholine. Preliminary studies suggest that the action is at the presynaptic site.
