Hydroxylapatite and tricalcium phosphate implants in the dental alveolus of rats. A histometric study.

The objective of the present study was to analyze histomorphometrically the biological behavior of microgranular hydroxylapatite (HA 40), and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) implanted in the dental alveolus of rats. All three materials retarded alveolar repair when compared to controls, since less bone was formed during all periods of study. Nevertheless, MIC and TCP showed higher compatibility than HA 40.

Protein synthesis in wound after tooth extraction in pancreatectomized diabetic rats.

The incorporation of alanine C14 in protein synthesis was analyzed in recently formed alveolar tissue after tooth extraction in partially-pancreatectomized diabetic rats. The incorporation of alanine C14 was higher in diabetic animals than in treated diabetic and control groups. The results can be explained by a delay in bone tissue repair.

Myxoma of oral soft tissue.

The clinical and histopathologic characteristics of oral soft tissue myxoma are reviewed. A case of soft tissue myxoma of the alveolar ridge is presented, and the diagnosis is discussed.

The effect of partial-pancreatectomy-induced diabetes on would healing subsequent to tooth extraction. Histologic study in rats.

A histologic study of the effects of diabetes on wound healing of dental sockets was undertaken in rats. The diabetic sate was achieved by performing partial pancreatectomies. The subjects were perfused with 25 percent glutaraldehyde (fixation) and the healing sockets were studied at 3-day intervals during a period of 22 days. The delayed healing observed in this study, when the diabetic condition was due to partial pancreatectomy, was not influenced by the technique used, but was the result of the metabolic modifications of the induced disease.

Evaluation of pain and swelling after impacted third molar surgery.

The pain and swelling resulting from impacted lower third molars surgery were investigated in 18 patients. A descriptive pain scale method and paracetamol consumption were used for pain evaluation. The face bow nine-pointers was used for swelling measurements. The results showed that the pain peaked at 3 post-operative hours when it was considered of moderate intensity and decreased considerably in the following periods. Swelling peaked between 32 and 48 hours after surgery, and thereafter, a tendency towards regression was observed. No corelationship was found between pain symptoms and swelling.
