Computed tomography has evolved into a unique diagnostic modality that is slowly gaining acceptance for use in the chest. The overall impact of this relatively new technique will be tempered by the inexpensive and universally available conventional diagnostic studies. More refined and sophisticated CT devices will certainly become available in the future. The use of ultrashort scan time will further improve the images obtained in the chest by minimizing the effects of cardiovascular and respiratory motion. The ultimate acceptance of CT will no doubt be hastened by the search for otherwise undetectable pulmonary nodules and an appreciation of its usefulness in the evaluation of lesions of the chest wall.
Breast tumors can be clearly defined from the surrounding breast parenchyma by the use of computerized reconstructive tomography. Certain types of fibrocystic mastitis also can be distinguished from tumors, but other types of fibrous mastitis and probably fibroadenomas may not be distinguishable from tumors unless contrast material is used.
An intraluminal duodenal diverticulum is an uncommon congenital abnormality that may produce intermittent ostruction. The true pathogenesis of this lesion is still disputed, but it probably results from ballooning of a congenital web or diaphragm with prolonged peristalsis. An intraluminal "wind sock"-like structure filed with barium and surrounded by a radiolucent halo is the classic and diagnostic radiologic appearance. An association with trisomy 21 is made.
